This $10 Planter DIY Makes Incredible Custom Toy Storage!

Earlier this month I did a roundup of ways to store/display plush toys I'd found while researching for a kid's room - but wouldn't you know it, NOT ONE of them seemed right for the space John and I were working on. They either hid the toys completely or displayed the toys completely, when we wanted a little of both. We also wanted it kid-accessible, but off the floor and out of the way.
 
I thought about hanging toy buckets on the wall, but all the large baskets/buckets/canvas bags I found were too expensive or the wrong shape. Then we checked the garden department at Home Depot for metal wall planters, but they were all sold out.

That's when I spotted it. Our cheap, easy, durable solution.

CUE THE HEAVENLY CHORUS

LAAAAAAAA!

(That's my attempt at a heavenly chorus.)

Yep, this $10 plastic planter was the answer to all our plushie problems.

The top half is surprisingly deep, so what you see in the end photos is only the top layer of toys. All of these:

I could have even fit more, but these were all the plush I could find at the time.

And next, here's the planter base turned into wall shelves for my office:

This is just a temporary set up; when we install them for real I'll use white foamboard on top instead of cardboard. You could also use these as wall planters; they'd look super cute with greenery and florals tucked inside! I'm keeping these for a future room makeover, so I'll be sure to update you when they find a permanent home.

I'm so chuffed that we made 4 useful storage items out of a single $10 planter - and this should work with any "Grecian Urn" style planter out there, so keep an eye out the next time you're in your local garden center.
