Friends & FOE: Mermaids, Puns, & TOM FRIGGIN' HIDDLESTON

When I'm not showing you guys what John and I are up to, I like to share stuff that will make you smile, or get inspired, or feel more connected to the community here.

In thinking about that the last few months, and how I could do it better, I realized some of my favorite stuff online is being shared by you readers, right there in my Facebook feed. So let's check in with some of the awesome, silly, nerdalicious stuff happening in FOE lately:

(Don't worry, I get permission to share first!)

First up, Kelli has a new color-changing mermaid tail!

Look how it shifts from purple to green!

Seriously, how dreamy is this? I have two mermaid friends (besides Kelly), and every time I see them I feel like a kid in fairyland. How many people get to say they're friends with mermaids?

This post from Lindsay makes me want to bring a stuffed animal when I travel:

D'awww.

One of my favorite things is your convention photos, especially if you made your costume and/or get a pic with a celebrity! I've never done the celeb thing myself - and don't ever plan to - so I am living vicariously through posts like this:

And since I know you want the full shot of Tom:

Her face in the back is cracking me up. She's all, "I'M NEXT TO TOM FRIGGIN HIDDLESTON, Y'ALL." (No judgement, I'd be the same or passed out on the floor, lol.)

A brilliantly bad pun from Kelsie:

::groan::

::slow clap::

Ever wanted a pet dinosaur? Because Lisa just got one!

AAAAAAAAAA!!

Ok, so baby raptor is really a puppet, made by Boonz Customs. Also we're waiting for Lisa to do a photoshoot with her new floof while wearing her Snow White cosplay. :D :D :D

And finally, another celebrity photo, because a different Lisa made my whole afternoon with her David Harbour shenanigans:

(If you're lost, just watch Harbour's Superbowl commercial(s):

:D

I hope these made you smile, and show you just how fun folks are around here. I talk to people all the time who have no geeky friends IRL and feel alone in their passions and silliness, when the truth is there are TONS of folks like us hanging out online, being weird, and ready to cheer you on. I hope you'll remember that the next time you feel like the only one who buys too many toys, or wears too many rainbows, or cares a LOT about fictional characters and fandoms. It's cool. You're cool. And this here? This is your tribe.

Love you guys!

  1. I can't decide which of these is the most awesome. I therefore declare all be supremely awesome, each in its own way.

Please excuse me now while I go faint with jealousy.

  4. Ever since my Husband and I saw that commercial "It's a Tide ad" has been one of our inside jokes! Hahaha. That picture is awesome.

  5. If only Facebook wasn't enforcing that "use your real name" rule... :(
I'm social-media phobic but opened a Facebook account just to join FOE and was a member for a few glorious weeks when the FOE group was still relatively new, and then Facebook froze my account until I could prove that I wasn't using an alias. Since I couldn't, they closed me down. Can't understand how some people get away with using fake names on Facebook and others don't, but as much as I would love to be a part of FOE, I'm not opening a Facebook account with my real name. Reading these posts about all the happy stuff happening over there always makes me feel really lonely and left out though.

I've asked if Jen could make an Epbot post specifically so the non-Facebook people could find friends in the comment section, but she probably missed it and will likely miss this one, too, since she is busy getting ready for SuperCon and working on the fixer-upper house. Soooo... I'm just going for it.

I'm looking for a female friend in South Florida! If you're close to my age (42), liberal, kind, and funny, let's hang out some time. I prefer women who are non-smokers, creative, in a committed relationship, and who are either kid-free or only have older child(ren). Vegan or vegetarian would be awesome. I like parks and museums, bicycling, hiking, and cooking. I've lived here 11 years and have seen almost nothing. Let's explore everything! Are you going to SuperCon? I can't make myself go alone, but I bet it would be cool if I had someone with me. Email me at pacific 40s at yahoo dot com (no spaces). If I don't respond to your email, then I didn't get it. Please try again! Can't wait to hear from you!

    1. You might try again with Facebook, K; I'm friends with several folks there who use fake names, some obviously so, and others that sound like any boring old name. I've heard that so long as it sounds plausible you should be OK, but obviously I haven't tested this myself. According to FB's 2015 ruling you can also tell them you have special circumstances, and they'll allow it - though again, I don't know the specifics.

I hate to see you feeling left out over something that *should* be fixable, so I hope you'll do a little googling & try again with a new account. Not many people read the comments here, so you'd definitely have more luck connecting over there on FOE. Either way, though, wishing you all good things! <3

    2. "...and then Facebook froze my account until I could prove that I wasn't using an alias"

Wut? I've never used my real name *anywhere* on the interwebz (including FB) and I've never been even remotely challenge to prove my real identity. Is joining up on FB harder thesedays? I probably joined about seven years ago. :(

    3. I'm not on FaceBook either. I am a prosecutor and have a scary ex-husband, so want no info about me on the internet. Too bad i don't live in Florida, Anonymous, I bet we could be good friends!

    4. Hi, Jodi! If you happen to see this and you want a pen pal, I'm totally fine with that, too, but only if you like to write and have time in your schedule. And by "write," I mean email. You can reach me at pacific 40s at yahoo dot com (no space between the pacific and the 40s, obviously). If you write and then don't hear back from me, I didn't get it, so please try again!

  7. Why did I suddenly have tears in my eyes when you said “this is your tribe”? Oh great now I have to wipe away tears before I head to work. Surprise attack, Jen, a-thankyouverymuch. I’m happy to be a FoE, and happy for our lil corner of the internets ❤️

  8. I combine two of these posts and travel through airports with a baby T-Rex robot. When I fly to cons, he's too big and heavy to fit in my luggage so he gets to travel as a "personal item". I was worried about what TSA would think the first time. It turns out that I do get stopped by TSA repeatedly when flying with him...but it's only so they can pet the cute little dinosaur.

  10. Totally distracted by Tide Ad Lisa's shirt. Lisa, where did you get it?!

    1. The shirt itself is a Dickie’s Women's Industrial Long Sleeve Work Shirt (they have a matching shirt in men’s.). The Jurassic World and Isla Nublar Veterinary patches came from Amazon. The vest also came from Amazon (H2H Slim fit men’s utility vest.) Now costume up and take a shift puppeteering with us cause it is TIRING, Y’ALL.

    2. OH wait... wrong Lisa. But come puppeteer anyways. Cause for real. Tiring.

    3. I got it about four years ago at a Cincinnati Comic expo. I will check an old program to see if I can remember the vendor.

  11. Indiana ComicCon represent! I, too, had my picture taken with David Harbour but played it straight (I was too busy trying not to panic and was thinking "OMG, my arm is around David Harbour and his arm is around me, OMGOMGOMG.) LOL :) And yes, FoE is fantastic. I'm an adult that just learned to ride a bike & I made a post during an anxiety attack (too many people in the park where I was learning by myself) and not kidding, a couple of hundred people commented to cheer me up and help me keep going. :)

  15. Epbot is the coolest site on the internet, and FOE is the coolest part of Facebook. Both are the only thing that keep me signing onto the interwebz sometimes.

  16. It took me a minute to figure out why the kitty song seemed so familiar and the *sploosh* all over the keyboard. That was a good one.

  17. I took a vintage Figment plush with me to EPCOT recently to take photos of him to turn into a photo book for a friend who loves EPCOT but hasn't been able to go for four years because of medical issues. Let me tell you, that Figment got a similar treatment that teddy did. The security guy who checked my bag commented on how he hasn't seen a Figment like him in ages. As I dressed Figment in a Figment hat in the gift shop connected to his ride, I had a mother and adult daughter in awe, asking where I got him because they wanted one. I took him to Reflections of Earth, got snacks with him, photographed him in all the iconic spots. It was so endearing to have other people positively react to him as I did feel silly at times, toting around a plush toy as a 32 year old. I'm going to post of photo of him on your facebook page because it's super cute and I know you'll love it. (My friend was almost in tears when I gifted her the book).

  18. I'm a bit older than your average tribe member, but I'm so glad I found you all. Because of my current financial situation, my toy/oddity buying is limited to the cheap. But, guys! I'm got all these great grab bag things now! And I'm making stuff. So the geek continues! You can do it all with I-MAAAAG-I-NAAAAAAA-TION! Love you all.

  19. FB hates me so much! FoE is pretty much the only group I follow, and I'm fairly active there. Yet, I saw not a single one of these posts! Thanks for the round-up of goodies.
