It's like a fireball rose! SO PRETTY.

Alex Monroe released some of the sweetest Beauty and the Beast themed jewelry I've ever seen:
Look at the details on Cogsworth! And there are Lumiere earrings!
There's quite a bit more, so hit the link up there to see the whole collection - but be prepared to faint over the prices. (YOWCH.)

Speaking of jewelry, look what Sevione on Imgur made:
It's a Niffler jewelry stand! AAAAAAAA!!!!
Can you believe that's 3D printed? That's some incredible finishing on Sevione's part.
For those of you making grabby hands at the screen like I am, I have good news: you can print your own, too! Just go download the free files here on Thingverse. (If you don't have a 3D printer, go butter up a friend who does.)
(In unrelated news, dear internet friends who have a 3D printer: You look SMASHING today. Is that a new haircut? :D)

San Diego Comic-Con happened last weekend, which is when all sorts of awesome new geek toys and art and figures get debuted. My favorite? This Otto and Victoria music box by Brian Kesinger:
I'm a big Otto and Victoria fan, and this thing is gorgeous. Apparently the light Otto's holding really lights up, plus there are all these great details on the back:
Happily this wasn't an exclusive; you can pre-order one online, no SDCC badge required. It's $200, so not cheap, but you do save $50 by ordering ahead of time.
(I just realized this is turning into a product-heavy Gems edition, but I promise - as always - nothing here is an ad or sponsored in any way. I just like this stuff.)

I'm not a Game of Thrones fan, but you guys, this DIY "Throne Charger" by Natural Nerd is SO COOL:
If you only want a phone stand and don't care about embedding the charger, I'd try making it with foam core board instead of MDF. That way there are no power tools required, but it'll still look the same. (Plus I saw a few comments warning that hot glue is bad for a charger cord, so it might be safer to make this just a stand anyway.)
I'm also super psyched to explore Natural Nerd's archives, because I'm seeing some Suh-WEET nerd crafts in there! Definitely follow them on FB and go explore their Youtube channel for more - I know I will.

And finally, for your moment of calming cute, please to enjoy this swimming Corgi:

ReplyDeleteRight, need to get our 3d printer back up and running and then updated to print 10x10x10. Making so many grabby hands at my screen.
ReplyDeleteAlso I can't wait for my new copy of the coloring book for Otto & Victoria
DeleteThat video...alcohol inks. They are really fun to play with. And there are tons of videos on YouTube. After a quick search... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zInSB4VZ_I
ReplyDeleteYeah, the bottles definitely look like alcohol ink. But is she dripping into resin?
DeleteThat's so fantastic! I know Josie, and she does some amazing stuff!
ReplyDeleteHey Jen, not sure if you knew this, but Brian Kesinger is doing a Kickstarter for two new books (of dragons and mermaids)--it's here: Dragon & Mermaid
ReplyDeleteThank you for the swimmimg corgi. I really wish I had a 3D printer. Not for anything specific, just to play with. So, no, it's not a new haircut. (Although, actually it is. Oh nevermind.) Love your new haircut too!!
ReplyDeleteThe back legs on that swimming corgi made me laugh for 5 minutes. Thanks!
OTTO AND VICTORIA!! *Swoon!
ReplyDeleteI have them all over my bathroom walls. :)

check your local library for a 3D printer, I know ours has one, not sure what the rules of use are, but it must be cheaper than buying one.
ReplyDeleteMy local "guy who has store and will fix the phone you were clutzy with" has a 3D printer I think I know what I am making foe my daughter's birthday next month.
ReplyDeleteWhy yes, Mom just cut my hair today! ;) Thank you!
ReplyDeleteOh, and that Niffler! Sweet! Don't know anyone with a 3D-printer, though. Oh well. :)
My hubby recently bought a 3d printer at a decent price and then began by printing upgrades for it that improved the print quality of the machine. So don't be afraid to get a lower cost one and look up some upgrades instead of spending a ton of money. I think he spent about $250 for itm
ReplyDeleteHello all! Yes, those are alcohol inks, specifically they are the ones made by Ranger. The artist is not dripping them into resin, she is dripping and squeezing them onto Yupo paper. Yup is fascinating, and you have to be able to "let go" and be spontaneous to use it. It is made of polypropelene, as I recall. It feels like sheets of PVC pipes. It is primarily used with watercolors and alcohol inks. You should be able to find it at your local art supply store. If they don't have it, you can definitely get it at Texas Art Supply Full disclosure: I work there. ^_^
ReplyDeleteHello again! I want to amend this post that I made earlier. I am no longer certain that she was doing this on yupo paper. She may in fact have been dripping it into resin as someone else suggested. I was watching the video on my phone this morning and it reminded me of some similar things that I have done with alcohol inks on yupo. However, I watched it again just now on my computer, and I saw more details. What looked like ink crawling at the edges (as I have seen it do on yupo ^_~) now appears to be tiny bubbles on the bigger screen.
DeleteAlso, if I'm being completely honest, (which I always try to be), I totally missed all the resin comments that the artist herself made under the video. XD (Though to be fair, she does also mention fairy juice. ^_~)
I thought I should mention that before someone went out to get yupo: it may not be what the artist did! She might have put down blending solution first, but the mention of resin makes me think not. Sorry for the confusion everyone!!!
Ooh, how I wish I had a 3D printer!
ReplyDeleteWhat size you want, Jen? My printer can do 3 ft by ft by 1 1/2 ft in PLA.
ReplyDeleteHow? How have I not heard of Otto and Victoria?? *so much love*
ReplyDeleteAlso, ha! Corgis crack me up.
I love everything in this post! I'm not sure who Otto and Victoria are though. . .May have to figure that one out!
ReplyDeleteAs soon as I saw the IG video, I knew it was alcohol inks. I'm assuming she calls that fairy juice because it is pretty magical stuff. I squeeeed all over the Niffler print and then sent the thingaverse link to my hubby so he can print one for me and one for a friend. If they turn out, we can do one for you too! :D Oh, and the B&tB jewelry - a-freakin-mazing! Thanks for all the awesomeness to start my day!
The downtown Orlando library has a 3d printer. http://tic.ocls.info/3d-printing/
ReplyDeleteAlso, I think Factur (near downtown Orlando) has one, but membership isn't cheap. I went to an open house there once and they have some really cool "toys". By "toys" I mean everything a maker could want. If John ever saw it he might not leave. http://factur.org
ReplyDeleteThank you for this! A friend of mine had a 3d Printer and I am now holding a muffler in my hands thanks to this post! Huzzah!
