MegaCon 2016, The Best Cosplay, Pt 2

Oooh, you guys are gonna love this final batch! (Click here if you missed Part 1!)

Starting with these stunning ladies:

Jessica Rabbit and Maleficent know how to make it look good to be bad.

I will never stop loving Effie Trinket's butterfly dress. NEVER.

 ::faints::

I *think* this is the same Effie I photographed at Dragon Con a few years back:
This was always one of my favorite shots, so hey, any excuse to post it again. :D

Now some lovelies with a heaping helping of badassery:

Merida is a reader and friend of mine, Traci. And I *want* to be friends with Robin, because that armor! Ah! [bows down]

John stepped out as Dreamfinder on Sunday, and not only did we find a fellow Figment...

...LOOK AT HER FEET.

I don't know why I'm crushing on those three toes in flip-flops so much, but I really am. Plus she was wearing yellow contacts!

Beautiful makeups:

A couple of Big Guys:

I like to think Baymax steps in to fix everything/one the Juggernaut breaks. :D

A perfect Nightmare Before Christmas group:

Looooove lady Jack Skellington, and how her hair mimics Jack's round head. Plus she's holding Zero!

This is a lousy photo, but here's the incredible Groot we waited in line with for the costume contest:

And the Wolverine in the background is his dad, who made it! I can't tell you how beautiful this costume was in person, you guys - I'm shocked he didn't win any of the categories.

Speaking of, here are two of the lovely ladies who did win:

Samurai Sailor Moon (SO CUTE) won Best Anime, I think, and Zelda Twilight Princess won Best Children's.

Back to Sunday again with an incredible Edward Scissorhands:

And the creepiest lady Predator:

My friend Stephanie as a young Professor Sprout:

She did ribbon embroidery on her hat with teensy bees and flowers, and her plant - a mimbulus mimbletonia - is made from foam balls and clay.

These three - Mai, Azula, & Ty Lee from Avatar: The Last Airbender - posed perfectly in character:

The cutest little Rey plus Aurora and Ariel as Star Wars fighter pilots:

Disney parks goodness:

That's the famous Haunted Mansion tightrope girl (her umbrella is behind her; I caught them just as they were about to sit down) with the famous Redhead from the Pirates of the Caribbean ride!

And can I just say how thrilling it is to see cosplays of a Disney ride painting and a Disney ride animatronic? Look around, look around! How lucky we are to be alive right now!

Ahem.

References for you non-hardcore Dizgeeks:

 Srsly, these ladies NAILED IT.

While we're talking Disney parks, here's my favorite of John's Dreamfinder encounters:

Most kids are nudged into taking a picture by their parents, but this little Sweetie couldn't wait to hug Figment. D'awwwwww.

I also managed to catch the world's cutest little Moogle just as she spotted John with Figment:

She couldn't take her eyes off him, but our attempts to get a photo of her with Figment were met with, er, less enthusiasm. Ha!

A little Hocus Pocus:

And one of the most stunning Furry heads I've seen in ages:

That Griffin beak is blowing my mind - and those green eyes!

Spot-on Harley and Joker from the new Suicide Squad:

I could be wrong, but I *think* her gum bubble was a prop. If so, it's friggin' brilliant.

Remember those gorgeous Hogwarts witches from my last post? Here they are as Fauna and Merryweather from Sleeping Beauty:

And I later caught up with the whole trio:

Flora is none other than DaVid McCarthy, who was Lockhart in my last post! Each made their own gowns, and you can see more of their work on Instagram: Flora, Fauna, Merryweather

So I had to Google why this next He-Man is blue, and the answer is friggin' fascinating:

(makeup by CaraG Makeup

Turns out he's actually Faker, an evil He-Man replica who served Skeletor, but here's the fascinating bit: this character exists almost exclusively as a toy. He was never in the show in this form, and only showed up in one mini-comic later on.

Faker was really just a repaint of the He-Man doll put in Skeletor's chest armor, plus a chest sticker under the armor that showed "inner robotic workings." Which is why this cosplayer has a glowing screen on his chest.

This is ridiculously cool, you guys.

My friend Chris is hardcore into vintage action figures, and even though I am not, I love listening to him explain things like this, and just sharing his passion. In fact, that's what it is: I am delighted by people's passions. If you're excited about it, and it's something I know nothing about, then I want to hear it. So I am delighted that I just learned something new and nerdy with this cosplay. DELIGHTED I SAY.

Ok. Moving on.

THE most beautiful Skull Kid (wearing Majora's Mask):

The face underneath even has glowing eyes. Gorgeous.

And finally, a trio of princesses looking pretty in pink!
Giselle, Rapunzel, and Cinderella.

I believe all of these gowns are DaVid's work. I especially like Cinderella's; you don't see her pink dress too often!

As always, I have lots more photos than I had room for here, so head over to my Flickr account to see the rest. (It pains me how brutally I had to cut these down, you guys. PAINS ME. So give a gander to the rest of the lovelies, and of course be sure to tag anyone you know!)

Hope you all enjoyed your virtual trip to MegaCon with me!

  1. I love these posts sooooo much! Thank you for explaining characters and taking the time to show the IRL versions. I agree with you about loving to hear about people's passions. I love costumes, Harry Potter and Disney, but many of the Cosplay characters are unfamiliar to me. Your posts are so enthusiastic and well done, that I have gained an appreciation for all these characters & especially the artistry of the creators. (Like boarderland - I have no idea if is a movie or game or what, and from what I've seen I don't think I want to know, but I am so impressed by the way boarderland cosplay captures the pen and ink style of the images. They are amazing!)

Congratulations on your Best In Show! So well deserved! Agnes is incredible.

  2. So beautiful!

I went to my first Con in London last weekend, and I was SO disappointed. There wasn't a lot of good cosplay, and none of the clever mash-ups that you show. And no panels I was interested in. I think I need to choose my next Con more carefully.

  3. Seth Green also put Faker into Robot Chicken several seasons ago. So he does (sort of) have screen time AS an action figure! (warning, this is Robot Chicken, so it is not quite suitable for children) Faker crashes the party

  10. Thank you for this awesome coverage and the beautiful photos, Jen! I know you didn't get to see as much as you normally do because of Agnes, but I know we all agree that she was worth it!

  11. I like to think of myself as an artist. I went to art school. I make costumes. Blah blah blah. And then I look at some of these costumes and my jaw drops. How does that skull kid even see? WHERE ARE THE EYE HOLES???!! I'm with you Jen, I am just fascinated with the passion these people have in planning and executing these sculptures, because that's what some of them are, pure art, mixed with theatrical performance. **fasinated!**
