If you follow me on Instagram (which I've only started using again the past few weeks) you may have seen some imaginative works-in-progress lately. John and I started this project almost exactly two months ago, and it's been a long road of trying new techniques and tools, but in the end, I really couldn't be happier.
Introducing... Figment:
He is completely handmade from scratch, from the tips of his split tail to his hand-embroidered sweater. I'll be posting a complete build break-down and plenty of process photos next week, so watch for that if you're curious how we did it all.
For you non-DizGeeks, here's one of the many vintage reference photos we used of the original Figment:
We're scrambling to finish Figment's two tiny wings today, but I wanted to get some decent photos before our daily deluge began. (So. Much. Rain!)
For now, here's his wing-less back view:
That stand John built is a work of genius, and I plan to paint it brass & have red velvet padding on the foot and tail bar. Because, oh yes, Figment WILL be on display in our home after DCon.
Speaking of which, John plans to step out as Dreamfinder with his
not-so-little friend here on Saturday at Dragon Con, so
watch for him then if you'd like a photo with the two cutest guys at the con. ;)
Oh, my God. I actually sucked in a breath and got a little teary when this loaded. He looks *incredible*. You guys really outdid yourself on this one.
ReplyDelete-Em
THIS IS AMAZING!!! I remember Figment from when I was a little girl. I still have my Figment figurine. I would love step by step instructions so I can make my own! And please make sure to post many pictures of John and his little buddy so we can all see how happy he is! Big hugs!
ReplyDeleteWow. Figment has always been a favorite of mine, and he's PERFECT. Jen, you two have outdone yourself. Beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThis brought tears to my eyes! I cannot WAIT to see John and Figment together... oh the memories. He is magnificent.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh I'm super sad I'm not going to Dragon*Con this year now!!! Figment!!!!
ReplyDeleteConsidering the response John got last year I can't even imagine how stupefied people will be this year!
ReplyDeleteAmazing!!! I can only imagine the response and reactions and thrills you will generate when you unveil him at the con.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to your report on your return.
Tiny P Elephant
You two are so talented! You really outdid yourselves with Figment.
ReplyDeleteI gasped out loud when the image popped up in my feed reader. This is AMAZING.
ReplyDeleteI literally gasped when the pictures loaded! How fun. Fantastic work.
ReplyDeleteHoly cuteness! Way to go (again!), John & Jen! Can't wait to see pictures of the full ensemble...
ReplyDeletegasp! figment is PERFECT!
ReplyDeletecongrats on such great work.
You guys have cloned Figment. Seriously. Great, great job.
ReplyDeleteI am always in awe of you both. We are lucky your super powers are used for good. The craftiness is strong in you both.

You've got me teary again! Figment is likely my favorite of all characters and he gets SO LITTLE love... But you have put in so much love and time... *sigh* I would go to Dragon Con JUST to see John.. except I live no where nearby and, yeah.. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI am now incredibly sad I'm not coming to DC this year - it was meant to be our first, but we couldn't get it together and life got in the way.
ReplyDeleteThis is so absolutely awesome! I can't wait to see the photos of Figment with John as Dreamfinder!
Figment!!! Oh, I love him! You guys did great! I'm so totally in awe. I adore Figment and Dreamfinder, and I'm still miffed that the original attraction is gone.
ReplyDeleteAmazingness! I need him to protect my dreams!
ReplyDeleteo.O I'm just staring at the screen in open-mouthed awe. he looks amazi-balls!!!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh! That is fantastic. I love the details! You two amaze me consistently.
ReplyDeleteI. Just. Died!
ReplyDeleteThat's Fantiastic! Great work! I'll be on the lookout Saturday!
ReplyDeleteHoly Guacamole! You guys are the most creative people - fantastic work!!!
ReplyDeleteSQUEEEE! Are you freaking kidding me?!?! You guys BUILT a Figment?!?! Is there anything you can't make? I'm really looking forward to the tutorial and process shots so I can see how exactly this magic happened. Awww! He can sit in a tree!!!!
ReplyDeleteIs he a puppet? Will John be wearing a fake arm to hold him? I reeeeeaaaallly hope he's not a puppet or I will never again be proud of anything I make.
I hope you guys will have a blast at DC. Well, I KNOW you will. Jen, please tell me that you've recruited a friend or family member to be John's handler so that you can concentrate on photographing him. When you get home, I want an entire post of nothing but people reacting to Dreamfinder and Figment! ARGH, it's going to be SO good! Everyone is going to flip out!
You guys are awesome!
KW
and for this reason alone, I am so sad there's no way I could make Dragon Con. Pictures and tales will have to suffice.
ReplyDeleteI gasped so hard I think I hurt myself.
ReplyDeleteAre you guys reading the new Figment comics too? Or will you be checking them out at the con?
He looks PERFECT! Just as I remember him from years ago. You and John outdid yourselves this time :)
ReplyDeleteI didn't get a ticket to DC this year, and I'm really wishing I had! John is going to be swarmed by people wanting to get pictures. Amazing job! Enjoy the Con for me.
ReplyDeleteThe ONE thing my brother wanted from my trip to Orlando (that he financed) was a stuffed Figment. <3
ReplyDeleteThis is my favorite thing EVER. Figment has always been my favorite and I have a childhood photo with Dreamfinder that I treasure! So amazing!
ReplyDeleteOMG that is totally awesome!! This has now officially bummed me out about not going to DragonCon this year.
ReplyDeleteJust stunning. While I'm very jealous of your and John's amazing skills on these projects, I'm REALLY jealous of your ability to actually FINISH them! I'm great with the design process but not so much with the follow through...
ReplyDeleteI will make DC one of these years!
ReplyDeleteThis weekend I'm taking my niece to fan expo in Toronto. It's too bad that fan expo is definitely too crowded (even I get overwhelmed by it) cos I'd love to be able to visit :)
When I can afford it I'm definitely heading south for something wonderfully nerdy :D

It IS Figment! He is so perfect! Now I want the classic Figment ride.
ReplyDeleteI will need to find you!
ReplyDeleteLOVE!!! I am amazed and impressed and can't wait to see the con pix.
ReplyDelete"Two tiny wings, eyes big and yellow, horns of a steer, but a lovable fellow..." =-)
ReplyDeleteOh, I love Figment! I still have (and occasionally wear) a purple Figment hat and T-shirt that I INSISTED my parents buy for me back when I was in 6th grade. We got it at the Journey Into Imagination itself (nowhere else in the park would do, it HAD to be from there), and when I was at Disney a few years ago, I wore it and the Talking Trashcan teased me about needing to update my Disney wardrobe, but all I can say is, Figment is a classic!
Your little guy is beautiful. I hope you get plenty of praise and have lots of fun at the Con!
That is flippin' fantastic!!! I can't wait for the progress pictures. Does his left hand only have 3 claws? Or is the hand just tilted at a different angle.
ReplyDeleteI think the only way to verify is if you attach the wings and take pics of the hubby in full costume.
Very cool. Can't wait to see the construction. John will look spectacular with his new friend. Congrats!
ReplyDeleteGreat job to both of you!! Figment is one of my favorites!! :-)

ReplyDeleteThat is amazing! I can't wait to find out how you guys did it! Your creativity always blows me away.
ReplyDeleteOMG! So fantastic! Jen, you guys constantly amaze me. I want to be you :) Wish I could see you at Dragon Con, but a warm Atlanta welcome to you both :D
ReplyDeleteThat paint job is awesome! He's gonna be a huge hit. :)
ReplyDeleteI just saw John as the Dreamfinder on Adam the woo's Instagram! I actually squealed with excitement! Two of my favorite internet peeps together! :-)
ReplyDeleteAhhhhhhh! OMGosh! He looks amazing! Think y'all would do commissions? ;-) He'd look fantastic in my Figment collection :-D
ReplyDeleteYour Figment is amazing! You two have such awesome talent! Wish I could go to Dragon Con to see you guys and Figment in person! Can't wait for the pics and tales of your adventures there!
ReplyDeleteA-mazing. I'm sitting here like no, they're having us on. No way is that not an original Figment from back in the day. Please please post pictures of the completed Figment with Dreamfinder at DC. I have to see how people react.
ReplyDeleteI hope you had a wonderful time at DragonCon. It is always so much fun. I wish I would have seen Figment in person.
ReplyDeleteSeeing you guys and Figment was the highlight of my convention. I even have a picture of a closeup of figment that John had me take as my phone background. Brings a smile to a bad day in a heartbeat. The work you guys did on Figment is incredible. It just looks and feels spectacular.
ReplyDeleteJust... WOW! Jen and John: You two are amazing! Figment and Dreamfinder were two of my all-time favorite Disney characters growing up. (Yes, I loved Figment more than the Mouse). And once "Journey Into Imagination" was phased out, I thought I'd never see them again. Of course, the new comics are wonderful, but you guys have really captured the essence of these characters!! I can't wait for the D*C pics!
