September Art Roundup: Dragon Con Special Delivery!

Before I get to the art, a quick recap. Feel free to skip!

I rave about Dragon Con's artist alley all year, but I gotta say, this year's DC artist alley selections were kind of lackluster. DC turns away dozens of mega-talented artists each year, so it's not for lack of options; I think they just tried to put more of an emphasis on original indie comics this year, since technically it IS called the "Comic & Pop Artist Alley."

As a result, more than half of the artists in AA were pitching their own indie comic books, and another 30% were the typical "T&A" comic artists we lady geeks have come to know & loathe. (Think the new Spider-Woman cover, but more explicit.)

I actually like a lot of pin-up art, don't get me wrong; there's just a line most older comic artists tend to cross, to the point even John was pointing them out in horror. ("I thought Supergirl was a superhero, not a porn star?")

That left about 20% of artist alley with stuff I actually wanted to shop, which made it easy on my bank account, but still disappointing.

Fortunately, DC has *two* art areas; next to Artist Alley is the Art Show, which features more fine art styles and paintings, no indie comics, and an enormous art auction display area, set up in aisles. That's where I found most of today's picks, and I'm excited for you guys to see!

So let's get to it!

My favorite new find in Artist Alley was Autumn of Daydreams & Giggles Studios. Take a look at all these amazing originals:

My favorite was Rainbow Brite, but the diva from Fifth Element gets major points, too:

And more from Autumn's Facebook page:

Sadly the originals were out of my price range, and Autumn only had prints in a whopping 11X14 - too big for me! If she'd had 4X6 prints I'd have picked up several, so I hope she'll offer smaller sizes some day.

Autumn has an empty Etsy store, so watch that and/or her Facebook page (both of which she shares with another great artist, Mark Dos Santos) for updates.

In fact, I've featured Mark before, but here's one of his latest:

It has a fun Norman Rockwell feel to it, right?

Tom Taggart is an artist & sculptor who had these fabulous ornaments for sale:

They're big - larger than my closed fist - heavy resin, and utterly charming. These photos don't do the paint jobs justice, either:

My favorite was the squid, which comes in several different colors & has an awesome splattery fade to it. They're $75 each, and watch Tom's Etsy shop for listings, since I'm guessing he'll restock there soon. (Or follow him on Facebook for updates.)

Now from the Art Show side:

Justin Gerard was sold out of this one completely, and it's easy to see why:

"The Seahorse" 8X10 print, $15 (or 11X14, $20)

SO PRETTY. And luckily you can still buy one online!

This one seriously tempted John:

Justin had this print there for $20, I think, but I don't see it in his online store. Keep an eye out, though; maybe he'll list it.

He also had a companion print in reds & oranges of a little dragon reading a comic book and dreaming of being a big bad, but I can't find it on Justin's site yet, either. Maybe soon? I hope so, since that was my favorite!

Keri Ruediger was also sold out of all my favorite prints by the time I reached her booth - and again,  easy to see why!

 WOW.

Two more:

Keri has such a rich style & vivid color palette that her prints practically jumped out at me coming down the aisle. This is the kind of fine art you can display in any room of the house, too, not just your fun/geeky office!

Check Keri's DeviantArt for the rest - so much eye candy! - and while she does have a print shop at Storenvy, it's currently empty. Boo. I guess watch that and/or her Tumblr for updates. (Also, how's this for confusing: her card says Keri Ruediger, but all of her online sites say Alice Chan. Um... ? o.0)

Caralyn of Mystic Reflections draws the CUTEST little dragons:

LOVE.

In addition to that general cuteness, she also sells geekier versions as prints:

Each 5X7 print is $10, and comes matted to fit an 8X10 frame. Nice!

And THEN, Caralyn also has this:

Fairest Of Them All, 8X10 print (in an 11X14 mat), $20

Steampunk Snow White! Suh-WEET! Head over to Caralyn's Etsy shop to see the rest.

More dragons, this time by Stanley Morrison:

He has dragons themed to all different kinds of drinks and fruits, which is fun, but I like this colorful mushroom dragon the best:

Head over to RedBubble for all of Morrison's big prints, starting around $22.

I've featured my friend Jasmine Becket-Griffith before, but I have to show this off: it was actually selected as the art Dragon Con used on all the room keys at the Hyatt!

"Clockwork Dragonling"

(Hit the link for all the different print options, starting at $14)

Jasmine & Matt gifted me with a canvas print of this - STUNNING - so then I immediately turned around and bought the canvas companion piece:

"Wind Swept"

These two are possibly my favorites of anything Jasmine's EVER done, and that's saying something; I've been following her work for over 10 years! Can't wait to get them on the wall in the dining room... just as soon as I find space. Heh.

Oh, and Wind Swept is limited to just 25 canvas prints, so if you want one, act fast! The canvas is $100, or you can get an open edition print for $14.

That's all I have for you guys from Dragon Con, amazingly enough, so lemme plug in one more find:

While searching Etsy for Soul Eater art I stumbled across Sarah Ellen Cheney's adorable Chibis, and, ah! IN LOVE.

She has full sets of all the characters from Korra & Soul Eater, too.

And here's a super sweet Corpse Bride:
Everything in Sarah's Etsy shop (aka Star In My Pocket) is surprisingly cheap: lots of button sets & key chains in the $5 range, or jewelry for around $15. GO NUTS.

Or you can do what I did and pick any 3 of her 4X6 prints for $12.

The prints are gorgeous in person, and come individually packaged on sturdy foam boards. Color me impressed!

There's lots more where those came from, too, so go see!

K, that's it for now, so... GIVE-AWAY TIME!!

This month I'd like to clear out some of the older pieces on the give-away board, SO, if there's something you've been pining over for ages, tell me which one in your comment!
In addition to one general winner - who will be free to pick something new -  I'll randomly pick a few extra winners who want some of my older prize selections. You don't *have* to tell me which one you want to enter, of course, but it'll up your chances if your choice has been on my board a while! (Keep scrolling down on the give-away board, btw; it refreshes & adds more!)
And as always, I'll ship anywhere, so BRING IT, internationals! I'll announce the winners in a few days.

Happy commenting!

The give-away has ended, and I picked TEN winners, listed here! Congrats, everyone!

  2. I still love "it's a star wars!" but I wouldn't say no to those James Hance prints either.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Oh! It looks like you still have robot ACEO! That's one of my favorites!

    ReplyDelete
  4. Oh oh oh oh! Wonder Woman by Erica Taguchi-Newton, and not for me. For my beloved little Mallette, who is about to turn 4 and whose official name is "Wonder Woman Mallette Queen Elsa of Arendelle" and indignantly corrects anyone who calls her "princess". But she'd be just as thrilled with Maleficent. And you continue to be an awesome person :)

  5. Huh, trying to comment on my phone and I've no idea if it worked. In case the comment didn't go through, here's a retry: my two favourites from the board are Alex Asfour's Star Wars piece, and the wonderful "Tea Time with Wampa". Since I'm on the phone I'm not quite sure which ones would qualify as "old", but at least Wampa's rather down on the list :)

  6. I didn't spend much time in Art Show this year so these shares are fantastic! Taking a look at your art board I'm not sure how old these are but I love the Wookiee-the-Chew prints by James Hance (Set B). <3 Dana

  7. Love the little dragons!

    ReplyDelete
  8. I love the dragon art you found! On your board, I still love the TARDIS "believe" print. Thanks for showing us new art every month!

  9. I didn't get to it this year so maybe it improved but I was a little disappointed in the artist alley at the montreal comic con last year. I was hoping for all the awesome stuff you always find.

It's hard to choose, I still love the 12x17 Marvel Character Roundup by Nathan Szerdy for my kid. But I love both of the Doctor Who silhouettes for me.

Oh my. I just noticed the Groot/DrWho mashup. Love.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I know it hasn't been up very long, but I want Toothless SO BADLY. I was really disappointed not to find Nathan early enough at DragonCon this year.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I NEED all the art but I espically NEED the Whistling Wash print!

    ReplyDelete
  12. Lovely roundup there. Not sure how "old" it is, but I'm partial to the Travel By TARDIS print on the giveaway board. :)

    ReplyDelete
  13. I don't know how long it has been up there but I really like the Dapper Joker and Harley. If that's too new still then I also wouldn't mind It's a Star Wars. Good luck everyone!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Would be lucky enough to win any of the art you pick but if I had to choose it would be either:
    Robot ACEO by Katie Cook
Princess Leia 8x10 signed print by Joe Martin
"Godzilla In Love" original ACEO by Katie Cook
"Cake In A Cup" original ACEO by Katie Cook
"Whistlin' Wash" Firefly/Steamboat Willy mashup by Ian Leino, signed 8X10 print
And i know they are new but any of the Wookie-the-chew!
You always pick the most amazing artwork! x

  15. There is so much pretty, but I really love the 5x7 Moster by Bianca Roman-Stumpff. Too much cuteness! I can see it working perfectly in a future tiny geeks room....

    ReplyDelete
  16. Dragons! I always love the dragons!

  17. Beautiful art this month, as usual.

I'd love to have any of the Doctor Who art on the board for my son, the Whovian. I can't scroll all the way to the oldest stuff because Pinterest won't let me do that since I don't have an account. Booo!

Thanks for the monthly art roundups and the give-aways! Always love to see what you found, and it's incredibly generous of you to literally share with your readers.

For the older prints, I think we would enjoy the Princess Leia by Joe Martin (labeled "8x10 signed print by Joe Martin - new print!) or "Chewie & C3PO, original watercolor ACEO by Katie Cook (with rounded corners)". The "Hello Pony" print is probably too new. :) My favorite of the new art is "Toothless by Nathan Szerdy, signed 12X18 print, donated by the artist!"

    ReplyDelete

  48. My husband and I are expecting our first child in January. We are putting together a galaxy/Star Wars themed nursery. I've been wanting the "It's a Star Wars" picture to put in that room for a while. It just screams baby room.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Squee!
While I cannot view the pieces at this time (my home computer is being worked on), I would still like to throw my hat into the lottery, thank you!
Also, I love that you are doing this today because this is my anniversary (13 years!!!) and I would probably end up picking a Star Wars piece because my husband and I love Star Wars. Probably end up putting it into the family room as I have two young boys who get into the trilogy.
    Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  50. I am happy with anything. There are so many things to choose from and winning from one of my favorite blogs would be like winning a small lottery! C'mon pick me!

  51. I'd love the Dr. Who Silhouette for my senior-in-high-school granddaughter. She was born in Colombia, grew up mostly in Panama (speaks fluent Spanish), then moved to Kalamazoo MI in seventh grade. Since then, she has been a part of her school and community choirs, gotten all A's, and recently had a perfect score ACT, and a missed-one-or-two SAT. She's been a part of musicals at school, has volunteered for years at an animal shelter (particularly loves cats), and now is working at Panera to help pay for school (and some little personal treats now and then, yeah!). She's funny, kind, and LOVES Dr. Who. This grandma would love to see her get an extra treat just because. Thanks for your consideration, Jen.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Would love, love, love the Robot ACEO by Katie Cook for my son's nursery. He loves "Bots!".

  60. So I'm not sure what you are considering "older" but I really like the "Hello Pony" print, the cute Batman and Batgirl, the cupcake ACEO and the robot ACEO.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Anything with Disney, Toothless, or Wonder Woman on it can not be passed up!

    ReplyDelete
  62. I think you found some pretty great stuff. :)

I think, don't know of course, that DC and others may be trying to move away from breaching IP laws. It's big business for people to come to these shows and "tell" on the artists and shows. DC and the artists could be opening themselves up for a big fat lawsuit with most fan art. Even if they won based on fair use or parody, it would cost a fortune. It makes me sad, but I can't blame them one bit for being cautious.

I see a bright side though - it will force people to come up with new ways to impress us. I bet if the derivative work continues to dissipate, we'll see some amazing and unexpected things in its place (and boobs, there will always be boobs).

    ReplyDelete
  63. Love your art roundups Jen. So many new artists! As for your older pins, I'm still in love with "Tea Time With Wampa" and "Whistlin' Wash". I'd hate to have to choose!

  65. I like the Disney Cruise Line sketch you have and the Rocket to the Moon poster!

Would love any of the Katie Cook ACEOs, the avengers prints, anything Doctor Who, the Jack Skellington...so many wall pretties!

    ReplyDelete
  118. Pick me! Among older prints, I've always been partial to the Robot ACEO one, as well as the one with the red rocket ship.

    ReplyDelete
  119. I don't have a Pintrest account and it wouldn't let me look at the whole board without an account (which has never happened before). But if the "It's a Star Wars" is still available, I would LOVE that one!

    ReplyDelete
  120. I love Whistlin' Wash!

I bought a copy of the Beauty and the Beast print you featured in July. Always such great artists on here!

    ReplyDelete
  121. I love the 'Travel by TARDIS' poster, as well as the Winnie the Pooh/Star Wars mash-ups! But really, anything Doctor Who, or the Toothless would be awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Large eyes and dragons are trending right now, that's plain to see! Wonderful selections, all. Having looked through the selections on your give-away board, I'm staking my claim to "Whistlin' Wash" Firefly/Steamboat Willy mashup by Ian Leino. That's pretty awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  123. Whistlin' Wash is fantastic, as is Don't Look Back - and oh, I thought about buying Year of the Snake for my fiancee, who loves Medusa, and I still have a desperate need for that Avengers minimalist popart looking one. But really, I could keep going. You find the most fantastic art.

    ReplyDelete
  124. I love the girl riding the seahorse! How cool! The art board has so many great pieces! I love the purple mermaid by Myka Jelina! It is really neat! :)

(may have already commented but it glitches weird whenever I publish my comments the first time)

    ReplyDelete
  132. So much cute stuff!! As always, you hurt my checking account with these posts, but I love it!

  133. Tardis with Believe. I desperately, and I mean desperately, as in I-will-add-you-to-my-Christmas-card-list-and-send-you-and-John-cookies-and-possibily-a-kidney-if-you-ever-need-it desperately want it for my daughter (the biggest Dr. Who fan in the world...seriously). And by the way, your blogs bring me great joy!

    ReplyDelete
  134. I love the Toothless print on the give away board. I love that cute face

    ReplyDelete
  135. My Star Wars loving daughter would be so excited to get the Joe Martin Princess Leia!

    ReplyDelete
  138. I am in love with "Godzilla in love". It's so super super cute!!!!!! <3

    ReplyDelete
  139. LOVE that seahorse by Justin Gerard! Seriously considering buying one...I bought a print of that baby kraken you featured a while back for my kids' soon-to-be-underwater-themed bathroom, and I'm trying to figure out now if the style of the seahorse one would clash too much? Hmm....either way, it's gorgeous! (Also, those dragons by Mystic Reflections are adorable!)

My favorites from your giveaway board (ordered oldest to newest):
    1. The Princess Leia print by Joe Martin
    2. "It's a Star Wars" by Danny Haas

  145. That's really too bad about Artist Alley, I've always loved your posts about everything you find there. Still, you got some awesome pieces!

I've had a look at the pinterest board, and the one piece I would LOVE to put up is "It's a Star Wars" by Danny Haas. :)

  146. Those dragons are adorable. Might have to get a set of cards for my mum's next birthday. My favourite piece of art that you have shared recently though is the Tim Burton haunted mansion style portraits. I was massively bummed to see they has sold out but then I started going through some of the sites other pieces. This may be bad for my bank balance.

    ReplyDelete
  147. My favorites are Bored Sherlock and Travel by Tardis, though it's all amazing!

    ReplyDelete
  148. Yay! I have loved and longed for "Whistlin' Wash" by Ian Leino and "Cake in a Cup" by Katie Cook for a very long time! I would be thrilled to adopt one from you. Of course, you will have visiting rights anytime!
    Hugs, Dee

  149. I adore the "It's a Star Wars" print. I know just the spot for it!

    ReplyDelete
  150. Hi Jen! I love a bunch of your older art pieces on the giveaway board, especially "Wonder Woman" by Erica Taguchi-Newton. I'm a chronically-ill 20-something and I often look at that painting and imagine being Wonder Woman. She looks so peaceful! Can I imagine my wheelchair is actually an invisible plane?

    ReplyDelete
  151. I've been eyeing the "Travel by Tardis" poster for quite awhile :) I want my reader's workshop in my classroom to be travel-themed with a geeky twist and it ties both ideas together perfectly!

    ReplyDelete
  152. I love all the Katie Cook pieces that you have on the board, but of course James Hance is always awesome!

  154. I can't decide if I'd get Hannah Lynn's Spring Fish or the DC Derby babes for my sister, or get one of the Leias for myself. Actually there are more I'd love to have, including several I know my boys would like, but I don't want to sound too greedy. Thanks for the giveaway!

    ReplyDelete
  155. I know it's not one of your older pieces but I love, love, love, the Toothless piece by Nathan Szerdy! So, I'll raise my hand hopefully once more. =) Thank you again for doing these giveaways. It's so much fun to see all of the awesome art that you collect and spread to the community.

  157. "Allo is close enough" by Joe Rock is adorable!! I love it!! :) And any by James Hance - love, love love!

    ReplyDelete
  158. The Tardis travel poster!!! I have my sister-in-law for Christmas this year, and she loooooves Dr Who.

    ReplyDelete
  159. I love the "Whistlin' Wash" print! It's Disney, Firefly, Sci-Fi, and adorableness all put together! Plus, when we're gaming my boyfriend and I joke about how I'm Wash and he's Zoe--because I prefer flying and he prefers guns--so it's got that extra special place in my heart.

    ReplyDelete
  160. Sure hope my comment gets posted this time. Love the art give-aways. Maureen S.

  161. I love Katie Cook's art so much! Just adorable!!

    ReplyDelete
  162. OMG! Those cute dragons are the best, and the Tenth Doctor dragon just made me squeal! Also, I love all the Katie Cook ACEOs, especially the Robot and the Godzilla in love. They are adorable. The Princess Leia by Joe Martin is also pretty awesome. Finally, I'm not sure how long they have been on there, but the set of four TMNT paintings takes me back to my childhood when my brother and I would pretend we were teenage mutant ninja turtles.

    ReplyDelete
  163. It would be very hard to pick a favourite out of all your wonderful art, but I do love the 8x10 by Jasmine Becket-Griffith with the blue hair.

    ReplyDelete
  164. One piece that I am really surprised is still left and wasn't snatched up the first week it was put on the board is the "Its a Star Wars" piece. I must say I really love that you do the art board and brings these artists to the attention of your readers, and that you give pieces away is just beyond cool. I turned 30 this year and got my first piece of "geek" art (it is Doctor Who themed). As someone who had a late in life realization that I really enjoy "geeky" things, I appreciate that your monthly art roundup posts are a great example that you can share and showcase these things we are passionate about in a fine art way.

  166. I love so many of the prints you just shared! Especially The Little Mermaid one. Wowza! One of these times I *know* I'm going to be picked. =D As to old stuff, so much of it is awesome! If I picked an older print, it'd be Dr. Who Silhoutte (for a family member), The Avengers (for a different family member), Rocket to the Moon (for yet another family member), and Toothless (for me. LOL!).

    ReplyDelete
  167. The Star Wars, by Alex Asfour. I can totally see my Darth-Vader-all-year-long son geeking out about me putting this on his wall.
You make me want to move to Florida. :)

    ReplyDelete
  168. Honestly, I'd be happy with anything from that board, but I can't believe that the Katie Cook original robot is still available! (And my "runners up" would be the incredibly cute orange monster by Bianca Roman-Stumpff and "Whistlin' Wash" by Ian Leino.) Pick me! Pick me!!

    ReplyDelete
  169. I'm still loving the Princess Leia cameo :) I love the little dragon reading too... describes me as a child!

    ReplyDelete
  170. Loving the diva from the fifth element! And the Queen of Hearts! :)
Need that pumpkin ornament... Need, Jen. NEEEEED.
I've seen the Little Mermaid painting by Keri Ruediger before. Absolutely wonderful! She's pretty stinkin' amazing. The Wizard of Oz is pretty perfect as well.

I can't believe no one has snatched up your "It's a Star Wars"!! I love that print!!
And anything by Jasmine Becket-Griffith! Her prints are breathtaking.

    ReplyDelete
  176. Oh! I love that Rainbow Brite too!! Makes me so nostalgic for the cartoons of the 80s. It really is too bad that there aren't smaller prints available! Okay - so as much as I would love one of the newer items you've added (Baby Groot is just too cute! And I already have a print of Pooh and Piglet walking down a (summer) path so how awesome would it be to add the winter one of Chewie and R2 next to it??), I have been eyeballing 'It's a Star Wars' since it went up and can't believe no one else has grabbed it yet! That and I would love the Batman and Batgirl Mini's - I really want to think up some way to frame them and use them in our house as a his-and-hers type of thing :) Maybe with awesome hooks under the frames for our keys (which hang for all to see due to the layout of our house)?? Anyway - thanks for the chance!!

    ReplyDelete
  177. I would LOVE the Hello Ponies! Thanks for the Art Round-up Jenn, I always enjoy :)

"It's a Star Wars" by Danny Haas
    "Avengers" by LocoDuck
"Marvel Character Roundup" by Nathan Szerdy
    "Avengers" by Alex Asfour
    "Toothless" by Nathan Szerdy

  183. What great finds! I love all the things you posted (that mushroom dragon is wonderful) but from your board I really like the Wookie the Chew set A from James Hance. And the alien vs predator from Bianca Roman-Stumpff is probably my favorite. But I can't pass up a dragon in a Jayne Cobb hat, either! So many great things! Thank you for sharing!

    ReplyDelete
  184. I love the Chewie and C3P0, and the robot ACEOS by Katie Cook. In the new stuff I LOVE all of the James Hance. Too cool.

    ReplyDelete
  185. I love the Joshua Graham Doctor Who posters. Not sure which I like better, the Fox or the Tardis travel poster. Very hard call.

    ReplyDelete
  186. The TARDIS Believe makes so much sense to me. And any of the Katie Cook ACEO's. And...comment, comment, comment!

  187. You always choose the most awesome stuff and my Etsy favorites list continues to grow exponentially...
Some of my favorites on the art board are:
"Don't Look Back" 6X9.5 (printed on 8X10) signed print by Brian Demeter (I've always loved Batman. :) )
""Catwoman" by Mike Maihack, signed 8X10 print"

So pretty much any of your Batman related prints I'd love to have. :) :)

  188. I would LOVE to have the Sherlock and Watson set over my desk. I have to do a lot of hard core thinking to do there (mathematician) and the absolute brilliance of that duo is very motivating. Also, thanks for what you do with the giveaway board. I have participated almost every time. Never won (yet ;-) ), which isn't surprising considering how many folks post here when there is giveaway time.

    ReplyDelete
  189. Travel by Tardis, is first, with the Sherlock and Holmes prints coming in at a screamingly close second.... As always you have opened up my Art world a little wider again. I say "Thanks!". My bank account says "Bad Jen!"..
