How cool is this?!
I am over the moon for this style, you guys. It only looks like the face slides open - the pendant is fixed that way - but the suggestion of a hidden mechanical element is just brilliant.
Here's another:
In addition to the deconstructed watch faces, Gates also makes gorgeous bird pendants from watch innards like this:
Plus intricate gear wheels painstakingly soldered together like these:
All of these pieces have already sold, but you can see much more at Gates' etsy shop, A Mechanical Mind. I'm going to be stalking it from now on in hopes of snagging a watch face pendant some day!
Now on to the other steamy goodies that have caught my eye since last time:
This gorgeous sculpt is by artist Tim Wollweber, and I'm gobsmacked by how perfect it is. That detail! That paint job!
In case you don't remember the original Gizmoduck from DuckTales, here's a reference:
See more pics of Wollweber's sculpture over at NerdApproved.
Speaking of cartoons getting a steamy makeover, Ellie R. spotted these Adventure Time illustrations by Mica Anunciacion over at io9:
I immediately told her I wanted to see them cosplayed, and whaddaya know, some people already have! Hit Mica's link up there to see more illustrations and cosplay pics, plus tips on how to build the costumes yourself. Fun!
Which reminds me: I've read that Adventure Time is FINALLY coming to Netflix ... today! WOOT! I can't wait to hop on the fan bandwagon; I've never seen any of it, so I have a lot of catching up to do.
Psst. Hey. Looking to do a little steampunky decorating on the mega-cheap? Then check this out:
The Library of Congress has released a huge online gallery of over 400 vintage prints and photographs like this, and they provide handy download links in case you want to print them at home!
Prepare to lose a good 20 minutes browsing, because there are TONS of great hot air balloon illustrations and ads in there:
LOVE.
In fact, I'm eying a spot on my living room wall RIGHT NOW that could use a pair of these. I see some printing and framing in my near future!
Well, I think that's enough for now; I'll save the rest of these goodies for next week. I hope you're all having a wonderful Easter weekend, and as always, please share your steampunky finds and creations in the comments, or over on the Epbot Facebook page!
Yay! Do you know what time it is? It's ADVENTURE TIME!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! You had no idea but my Daughter (age 7) just told me she wants to have a Hot Air Balloon birthday this year. I am so excited to use all of these free prints!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the hot air ballons link! I'm making Hubby a Bioshock Infinite-themed Easter basket. (I know, right?)and some of these pictures will be perfect!
ReplyDeleteOh boy - more jewelry :D
ReplyDeleteI'm bad for jewelry - I love it & make my own on occasion when I can't find what I want - but these are super sweet. Must snag myself one.
Does anyone know where I can get watch parts? I haven't looked seriously but haven't seen any.
Those prints would look great scaled up and mounted on board too - cheaper than framing for those of us who might be a lil light on funds ;)

If you have a Hobby Lobby nearby, Lisa Pavelka has a package of mostly teeny, tiny watch gears over by the candle making supplies. I haven't found them at Michaels, but I haven't looked either. Ebay and Etsy are also good choices, and you can sometimes buy old watches at antique stores and salvage the parts -- I read somewhere that if you do that you probably need to clean them, as they could have a coating of oil/lubricant that might not be skin-friendly.
DeleteSweet thanks :)
DeleteI'll keep my eyes open & check other online resources. I have only seen what Michael's, artbeads.com & fire mountain gems has to offer so far; and while it's not bad, you can't interlock the Michael's gears cos the metal is too thin and the quality is only so-so. They're great for other crafts though.

I am IN LOVE with those LoC ballon images! Must gawk immediately!
ReplyDeleteDid you see the Hot Air Balloon Leggings on Etsy? :)
ReplyDeleteI am officially inspired. The steampunk Gizmo duck has got the ball rolling for me. I've had a rubber ducky shaped piggy bank my kids broke a piece out of for a while. I glued the piece in, but of course it looked like crap, so I knew I had to cover it up somehow. Now I know I'm going to add some clay and a fabulous paint job, and viola! Steampunk rubber ducky piggy bank!
ReplyDeleteI myself am not at all interested in watching Adventure Time. The few times I have seen it, I have had to turn my brain off to even watch it, and the one time I saw a bee being penetrated by a flower was enough innuendo to write it off entirely.
ReplyDelete*GASP!* Do you know if there are prints available of the steamy Adventure Time characters? I NEED a Flame Princess and Marshall Lee. And Princess Bubblegum. And Fionna. And Ice King. Good lord I need the whole set.
ReplyDeleteBtw, I'm so super excited that you're going to start watching Adventure Time. My husband an I watch it and everyone else thinks we're weird. A lot of the episodes are odd and nonsensical, but as it goes on there are a lot of deeper moments or back story that are quite touching.
Also, I love their strange exclamations. "Aw, math!"
Blathering Blatherskites. Its Gizmo!
ReplyDeleteI am in love with that Gizmo Duck!
ReplyDeleteOn a small side, unrelated to Gizmo Duck note, that jewelry has me drooling. Too bad I could never come close to creating something as beautiful. I bow down to those that have the creative ability.
Love, love, love the jewelry. You have inspired me over the years to think about making me and my husband steam punk costumes. Haven't done it yet, but getting closer.
ReplyDeleteThese Hot Air Balloon prints are so perfect! My bedroom is a little bare right now but the little artwork I do have is somewhat of a Parisian theme. These prints are just what I need for me to take my room into a more Steampunky direction :D
