I'm Baa-aaack!

John and I got home in the wee hours this morning from Dragon*Con, and I can now say for sure that two huge conventions in two successive weekends is not the best idea.  I'm exhausted and a bit sick (curse you, Con Crud!), but absolutely ecstatic over the fabulous weekend we had.

I've already been at my photos, sorting and tweaking and dancing in my seat with excitement over all the goodies I have to show you guys, but you'll have to bear with me while I catch up with my day job (the one with cakes) and try to rest up a bit. I may also space out my Dragon*Con coverage with some regular posts, if you don't mind, since I don't like overwhelming Epbot with all con photos for weeks at a time.

In the meantime, though, a few highlights:

I finally got that photo with Steampunk Boba Fett I wanted:

And then we danced. :)

(I also fixed my cane; see how much brighter the lights are now? Tutorial coming soon!)

This was my first Dragon*Con using my new 7D camera and 17-50 lens, which we purchased with D*C specifically in mind. (We needed a high ISO and a fairly wide angle for up-close, low-light conditions.) Overall I'm really pleased with how the pics turned out. I thought this Daft Punk cosplay shot was especially nice:

I'll never admit to purposely stalking Felicia Day (AND YOU CAN'T PROVE IT), but I will say that I found myself within five feet of her on several occasions throughout the con, and never ONCE worked up the courage to say hello.

ERMAHGERD! FERERSHA DERR!!

The absolute best part of the con was all the readers I got to meet, though. Every year more of you find me, and every year I'm astounded by how many of you do. I thought I over-packed pins, but we kept running out! I like to joke that I only started the "find Jen" game on Twitter because I was lonely and wanted people to talk to me, but really, Dragon*Con wouldn't be *nearly* as fun without being stopped every hour or two with a random, "Jen? Are you Jen?"

I also love that so many of you are willing to hang out and chat for a bit - or in some cases, hang out for several nights in a row while fixing me & John ridiculous fruity drinks with umbrellas and gifting me with the most amazing plush EVAH:

Renee, you rock.

I'm going to wrap up this "super short check-in post" (riiiight) with what turned out to be the best unintentional photo bomb ever.

First, let me say that I've seen a ton of Jessica Rabbit cosplay in the past, but never one that truly approached her ridiculously cartoony proportions until this:

 Va-VOOM.

Anyway, it wasn't until I was going through my pics last night that I realized I'd accidentally captured the most perfect photo bomb:

The lady carrying the Roger Rabbit balloon just happened to be walking by - my other pics only have the tip of his hand bobbing past. Best shot ever? I'm thinking YES.

I hope you all had equally fantastic holiday weekends! Stay tuned for another book review, a quick hip bag tutorial, and of course TONS more cosplay shots from Dragon*Con!

  1. I might have flailed at your dancing picture!

And then I flailed again when I recognized the woman cosplaying as Jessica Rabbit! Her name's Yaya Han, she's basically a professional cosplayer, and her work is gorgeous. I know you're into impressive levels of detail, so you should take a look. :)

  2. That Roger Rabbit photo is AWESOME!

  3. Yay! new post! Awesome photo bomb, awesome pics. Be brave! Say hi to Felicia Day next time!

  4. Oh man!! We were at Dragon*con! And we missed you!! That's what I get for not using twitter. So sorry I missed you, maybe next year ;)

  5. I love it! And I have to ask, is Jessica Rabbit a man? Is it crass that I thought she might be a he? Not that there is anything wrong with it...

WV: vsuckag...I don't even need to make a joke here.

  6. Dang we must have been so close to each other! The Jessica Rabbit is YaYa Han. And I have a picture of her holding Roger, so now the real question is does he actually belong to her?!?

  7. Sounds like a blast! Love the photo bomb!! My husband & I go to SD Comic Con every year but I am still trying to figure out how to get to Dragon Con too (read: still trying to convince said husband to go to both Cons in one year). Can't wait to see the rest of the pictures & hear about how awesome it was!

  8. I love seeing your con pictures. I started following EPBOT after you mentioned the comic con (??) last year on that cake blog, or was it the year before? Anyway I wait in anticipation for your photos.

  9. I think that Jessica Rabbit is the fairly well-known costumer, Yaya Han, but I might be wrong. Brilliant little photo bomb, though.

I saw you twice this weekend, once while I was filtering into the Guild panel (you were in street clothes), and then on Sunday night when you were in fabulous Lady Vadore. Got pins from you, thanks so much! On Sunday I saw you when I was in my Portal Companion Cube dress, I think John might have gotten a shot of me and my boyfriend, who was Dr. Doug Rattmann. I didn't want to bother you too much while you were in costume, but I wanted to tell you that part of the reason I decided to play Portal was because of how much you talked about loving it. I'm not really a video gamer, and Portal and Portal 2 are basically the only video games I have ever played totally through, but I was hooked as soon as I started playing. GREAT game, thanks for helping to introduce me to it--it inspired one of my most successful (in terms of photos, recognition, and basic enthusiasm) costumes yet! Ironic, since the Companion Cube was my inexpensive, hastily thrown together costume, and I also had two other much more complicated, much more expensive and time-consuming costumes, and while those went over well those just didn't get the same enthusiasm as the Companion Cube. Everyone loves a Companion Cube, I guess.

Anyways, it was great seeing you (briefly) and I hope you had an amazing Dragon*Con, I know I did!

  10. I will bet a Stay-Puft hand made cross stitch from me that that particular Jessica Rabbit is a guy wearing spectacular Queen boobs, and a corset.

But that is the best photo bomb ever.

  11. Well, I just pulled up your post and told my bf it was a shame I didn't get to check out your costume in person and he says, "Oh, we passed right by her on the way to the food court." *headdesk* Thanks, hon. Sorry to miss you though. This con was the year of female Avenegers (especially Loki) and Bronies. And there seems to be much larger numbers of children present this year in costume. My bf's favorite costume was a 8yo boy wearing a shirt that said "Strangers have the best candy." lol Holy cow.

  12. I have been waiting for the DragonCon posts! Yay! And the dancing Lady Vadore/Steamy Boba picture is amazing. Can't wait for more!

  13. I am not a nerd, gamer, etc but love your pics of the cons even though I don't know the characters. I still appreciate the level of craftiness and devotion to come up with the fabulous costumes. So don't worry about posting lots of pics, it still makes for a great read. That plushie is so great. What a great fan and great gift.

  14. Best photo bomb indeed. The look on Roger Rabbit's face is perfect as well. Also, I want a crocheted Epbot. :)

  15. I love your con pictures, since I only (only!) get to go to SD comic con.

I also wanted to share that this year I ran into felicia day in the bathroom. She was washing her hands as I walked in, and I said hi and that I liked her work on The Flog (I was there for the live taping). She was SUPER nice, even though it was the most awkward place to meet her ever, and I didn't get a picture with her (because I was in the bathroom, ewww!) but long story short... i totally looked like a stalker to felica day, so you can't do worse than me. :)

  16. It was so nice to meet you! I only wish I could have seen you in the Lady Vador costume. Can't believe I missed it - I learned how to read more of the party docs. and twitter feeds the last day of the con....helpful for next year. I just didn't realize how much was going on! so much to do! I enjoyed it though and hope I can maybe make it back next year!

  17. It was really neat spotting you at D*C this year. I'm glad you had a good time. :)

  18. Looks like you had a great time! I also love the dancing picture. I'd love to be able to go one year. I'm looking forward to more of your pictures. I love looking at them! The amount of talent it must take to make them is astounding!
Also, "Ahhhh!!!! Felicia Day!!!" She's amazing! I would've had a hard time trying to say hi as well.
Renee, what a great job on the Epbot amigurumi! You rock!

  19. That dancing with Steampunk Boba Fett is the best thing on the internet right now!

So glad you liked your plushie! It was awesome to hang out with you and John - totally made my con. Heck, mad my YEAR! Can't wait to do it again! *HUGS*

  20. hehehe I saw a friend link to that Jessica rabbit costume a couple weeks ago....I Think that is actually a GUY in that dress!

YOU look amazing and you should so get in touch with Felicia days people to join up on some project!

  21. You were in the Guild Panel?! CRAP!! I had my eye out for you the entire weekend and never once spotted you. And as to the Guild Panel... remember at the beginning when they were ribbing the two people for walking out just as it started? Yep. If you happened to notice that happened at all, the girl in black leather would be me. I hope I get a chance to meet you another time!

  22. I also went, Ermahgerd! Ferersha Derr!
The plushie is supercute, and Jen, you are really short. But you rocked your Lady Vadore costume. I showed some friends the detail pics of your masterpiece :) Glad you were able to fix the lights!

  23. Oh good, Shelley in So Il said the same thing I was thinking about Jessica Rabbit: That's a man, baby!!!!

And you know what, either way, that is a killer cosplay costume! :)

    ReplyDelete
  24. EEEEE! You look amazing in the pic with Boba Fett. I kept an eye out for you, but didn't see you.

I did see steampunk Boba Fett though. I was like you with Felicia Day, I kind of pointed and hopped up and down. My husband asked "You want me to get a picture?" I managed to squeak out "Thanks!" after he kindly posed for us.

We met Felicia Day at The Guild booth on Saturday. We had her autograph a picture for us. We share the same first name (no, my name is not Felicia, she goes by her middle name)! We also share the fact that we were home schooled. She seemed SUPER nice. It's always great when you meet someone who you've admired from afar, and walk away liking them more, instead of disappointed by their huge EGO.

  25. Thank HEAVENS you're back, Jen.
I'm not a steampunky person nor a fill-in-the-space*Con person or, I dunno, much more than a crafty person who likes wonky things

The thing is, I'm also a PhD student. And epbot is one of my (few) internet happy places to go during the day when science and grad school is just a wee bit too much to face in that moment. (The other happy places mostly include copious amounts of knitting and baby animals.)

So thank you for coming back.

    I missed you.

  26. That's so funny what you said about about Felicia Day - I had the biggest awkward fangirl moment when she popped up at my elbow Saturday night. I think my body took over, shrieking "Oh my God it's Felicia Day!!!" and whipping around to face her as she walked past. The look on her face made me so embarrassed I never had the courage to actually say hi like a normal person either. Girl was obviously tired, so I left her alone. (I did snap some pictures of her posing next to a giant plush Totoro).
Tried to find you twice, but those vendor rooms were no joke :p

  27. That is a terrific photo bomb(shell). The balloon and the cosplayer are awesome!
I'm so glad that you had a great time at DragonCon. I was worried after the fact that my over-enthusiastic greeting might have scared the dickens out of you. Get well soon! :)

  28. Honestly, I was more excited about the Monty Python group than Felicia Day...Sadly, I don't think I even know who she is.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Super Squeeeeeee
I love your Dragon*Con posts, (which is the sole reason I even gathered the courage to finally make the drive from PA last year...by myself, I might add!!) and I can't wait for more!

btw, I would highly recommend saying hi to Miss Day. I forced myself to in 2011 and she was super pleasant. And I'm a nobody! You're Jen freakin Yates!!
    :D

Get some rest and feel better soon!

    Oh...and that plush is amazing!

  30. I am so jealous of your near-miss Felicia Day moments. She's kind of my girl crush. I don't know if I'd have the courage to say anything either, because from past con experience I know that when I meet someone I admire, I tend to get really fangirlish. We met Grey Delisle at CIV and after we left the booth, my husband said, "Ohmigod, could you possibly gush any more? You were babbling even faster than normal!" And I thought I had reigned it in. *sigh*

  31. I have to say, I can't seem to get enough of your Lady Vadore costume, Jen. I really wish I could see it in person, I get the feeling that a lot of the details just don't come across as well in pictures. Well done!

    ReplyDelete
  32. OhmygoodLord! The lady who is dressed up as Jessica Rabbit is amazing...though I'm sure a bunch of creepazoids were probably just as "amazed" as we all are. I like the looks of the guys in the background of the picture.
No disrespect to her, though, but the amount of makeup on her face and her cartoonish proportions made me think she was actually a dude! Lol - how funny it is that a woman can overdo herself to the point where she looks like a parody of a woman - or a drag queen.

  33. I'm with Chrissy, I was a D*Con this year and was sad I missed you. oh well, hopefully next year!

    ReplyDelete
  34. It was so much fun playing the Find the Jen game! Even though I thought I would never find you. I missed you in the Lady Vadore costume but I'll stalk you again next year? Creepy. Yea, probably. Thanks for giving out the buttons! I love seeing all the costumes at Dragon Con!

  35. Most definitely the perfect photobomb. So awesome! I'm convinced Felicia has heard of your work by now, next time you gotta say hi! :)

  36. I really like the idea of all the photo goodness being rationed. I get overwhelmed by awesome when there are too many together and don't look so carefully. Everyone looks fabulous!

  37. I just literally laughed out loud and (probably) scared my cats at the BEST. PHOTO. BOMB. EVER. LOVE IT!!

  38. The Jessica Rabbit is YaYa Han. So perfect...

  39. Great pics, thanks for sharing! (It's crazy how one can spend all 4 days of D*C, walk & explore every nook, yet still see photos of costumes we never managed to come across... )

  40. I think that the photo bomb was that thing that looks like the possible jessica's right nipple...? xD
