I found this South Korean music video thanks to a tweet by Zachery Levi (aka Chuck) around 3 this morning, and was laughing out loud by the :40 mark. It's by turns hilarious, bizarre, and - dare I say it? - kinda catchy!
Although you should probably keep in mind those opinions were formed at 3 o'clock this morning. Hee.
Now I'm off to do the horsey dance all over the house, just to freak John out.
PS - According to a source quoted on Gawker, Gangnam is the upper-class region of Seoul, so the song is a kind of parody of rich celebs. But really, who needs trifling things like words or meaning with moves that smooth?
PPS - I feel like now we should all go watch Pon Pon Pon again. [evil grin]
-----------------------------------------------
8/15 UPDATE: You guys, there's also a *female* version of this song! And it doesn't sound like "open condom style" at all when Hyuna sings it. (Is that a plus, or a minus? Ha!) Her's sounds more like, "open dudna stein."
Fortunately this version still has lots of the original singer Psy in it, though, and he makes it just as mesmerizing as the original, if not as funny. (No horsey dancing 'til the 2 minute mark?! Aww...) Here, see for yourself:
Most of the comments I've seen tend to harp on Hyuna's "baby-voice" singing style, which I can understand - but it gets better as the song goes on, I think, and the dancing alone makes it well worth a watch. In the end, I like both versions, but only because of Psy. He's just plain awesome. What do you guys think?
Thanks to Chandler for finding this! (via Buzzfeed)
Sometimes being German makes me so sad! I cant watch the vid =(
ReplyDeletethe trash blowing in the wind scene was the BEST. I smiled for the first time today-thanks!
ReplyDeleteIt seriously sounds like he keeps saying "open condom style"
ReplyDeleteI laughed out loud at this XD thank you!!
My son came over to me to ask what I was watching... and I wasn't sure what to tell him. That was definitely an interesting couple of minutes. :)
ReplyDeleteoh, the dancing makes it!
ReplyDeleteThat was amazing.
ReplyDeleteIn case you are interested, I found the lyrics: here
I thought knowing the lyrics would help me understand the video better, but it doesn't at all. All the funniest stuff is just random -- doesn't have much to do with the lyrics -- which makes me love it even more.
Heyyy! Sex-see Lay-day!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giggle.
After last night's Colbert Report with his bit on dressage where he danced while wearing a horse head and hooves...I think he needs to don them again and do this dance. The two would really go well together.
ReplyDeleteYep, I laughed until I snorted!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jen!
My favorite was the guy in the elevator!!!
ReplyDeleteROFL! Thanks for that!
ReplyDeleteThose "hammer" shorts are an interesting fashion choice, lol!
You gotta respect an artist that eats that much dust and confetti for his art [:33]. :-)
ReplyDeleteI have NO IDEA what I just watched. It definitely made me want to dance though...
ReplyDeleteBut...it really sounds like he's saying 'open condom star' so I'm not sure I can re-share this. :)
Knowing that about Gangnam makes parts of it makes sense ... a really nice barn full of TBs and Warmblood and an indoor that cost more than my college degree would totally fit in, in pretty any culture's conception of wealth these days. Until I got to end of the post I thought he might be talking about the Olympics? Maybe? Kinda?
ReplyDeleteNot the Pon Pon Pon song! Nooooooooo. (Horse dances away.)
ReplyDeleteI love this music video! Psy just cracks me up! I'm big into Korean stuff, so it's weird having two of my worlds collide. :)
ReplyDeleteAlso, I just wanted to share that my code to prove I'm not a robot is Analdoc, of all the random gross things. Really, internet security? Really?
Is that the Korean Ricky Gervais?
ReplyDeleteOPPA GANGAM STYLE!
ReplyDeleteI'm completely addicted to Kpop and it really amuses how this video has made its rounds on the internet. A video in the same vien as this one is Itaewon Freedom by UV. Classic. And if you really like Pay, look up his song he made for the Olympics. It's aptly titled Korea and makes me smile :D
OMG, Psy is a kack! You should do a YouTube search for his other stuff too :) the whole S.Korean music scene is pretty enormous, surprisingly. :)
ReplyDeleteLove it.....I'm just glad I was at home when watching this, I also laughed out loud and snorted....and slapped the desk a couple of times!! I'm still giggling.
ReplyDeleteNO!!!!!!!!!!! Not Pon Pon Pon!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteThis video, however, is pure genius!! :)
I want this song on my iPod.
ReplyDeleteAnd wtf about him being on the toliet?!
Any excuse to watch Pon Pon Pon again is okay by me. ;)
ReplyDeleteThe guy in the elevator looked like it could have been Mike Myers in one of his crazy Austin Power's costumes.
ReplyDeleteI am a 40 year old homeschool mom of 4 kids--and I have a HUGE secret crush on a Korean boy band called Super Junior. ; ) The first video of theirs I stumbled upon is purely hypnotic. And before I knew it I had my "favorites" and my daughters have theirs and it's like we're all 6th graders together bonding over teenybop music videos.
ReplyDeleteThen of course in the youtube sidebar rabbit trail, I discovered the girl band version of Super Junior called Girls' Generation, and their video "Gee" is so cute and catchy!
Even cuter is that the boys in Super Junior sometimes perform "Gee" at concerts, complete with the dance moves--can find clips on youtube. ; )
Funny thing is that I never liked American boy bands. But these South Koreans are just too cute!!!
DUDE! I almost fell off my chair. I too hear "open condom star" but figured it was the accent. LOL whats the deal with the shaving cream? :-D
ReplyDeleteI lost it when the elevator door opened.
ReplyDeleteAm I the only one that took forever to realize that the chorus was in English?
ReplyDeleteNo?
Just me?
The internet is a weird place.
ReplyDeleteThat video is awesome!! Loved the whole confetti bit at the start... and the dude in the elevator was a total what the? moment haha
ReplyDelete@ Blessed - We have a show in Australia on SBS called Pop Asia. It's the BEST show because every Sunday I get to watch 2 hours of Super Junior, Girls Generation, Big Bang, SHINee and so many more. They have a website, but I'm not sure if you'll be able to watch them if you are in America. Worth a try though.
OMG JEN YOU HAVE DISCOVERED PSY! He is an amazing performer, and I love him because he doesn't fit the usual kpop idol style, knows it, and has fun with it. That song and mv are huge in Korea right now; my kpop-loving heart is so tickled to see it posted on EPBOT! ^^
ReplyDeletecan't. stop. laughing. that was hilarious!!! my 13 year old son is now horsey dancing around the house. however, the eight year old said he doesn't get it.
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure this is JuJuBee from season 2 RuPaul drag race. I'm going back to watch it again!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite South Korean artist is Rain. He is absolutely beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI now plan to do the 'horsey dance' all day tomorrow simply to torture my children - they won't know what hit 'em :)
ReplyDelete(My word of the day was isortali. It's how you hedge your answer when asked just how weird this video was.)
you know, that horsey dance... reminds me a lot of going to Zumba class...
ReplyDeleteMy favorite part was him wearing the life preserver when he was dancing on the boat...like, he might fall out 'cuz his moves are so whack! Snort!
ReplyDeleteHilarious!! You always post the best videos :D HOWEVER, you made me go back and watch Pon Pon Pon...and I had to click the link at the top of the video for the "new single Candy Candy".....I'm not sure if it's weirder or just a whole different kind of weird...lol
ReplyDeleteWhere do you find these things? LOLOL Frikkin hilarious. PONPONPON however, was a freak of... something. I seriously belive that there was some kind of coded message for Summer in that vid. Not for me though, as I did not go on a crazy killing spree after seeing it, but my body almost shut itself down. To process that almost requires a coma-induced sleep.
ReplyDeleteThe only thing that could make this better (?) is if he were wearing 80s MC Hammer pants. ;)
ReplyDeleteI love your blog and Kpop so when I saw this I was really happy :) you should listen to more music I think you'll like it!
ReplyDeleteAfter reading some oof the comments, I don't feel quite so creepy now 8-)
ReplyDeleteI'm almost 48, and my eldest daughter has been into K-POP for years now, and I didn't really take much notice, until I came across a TV show on Aus TV called POPASIA while I was in hospital, and I got hooked.
I have serious dirty old woman crushes on Exo-M and now SuperJunior, they are all so so pretty.
Psy annoys me, but I can see why people are enjoying his MV.
I think I'll run off and watch some more SuperJunior and fangirl over Leetuek.
YES! The greatness that is Psy in this video. Even though he isn't my favourite Korean performer (that has to be Big Bang) I'd love to see Psy live because his performances just sound incredible. I second anyone who hasn't watched 'Itaewon Freedom' to look it up as well - that's another awesome and bonkers video. Or try Big Bang's 'Fantastic Baby' - maybe a slightly less bonkers video, but still a song you want to crank up to full volume!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE THIS!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm so posting it on facebook!
KathyT
have you hear Puffy Amiyumi 's Boogie Woogie number 5?? it is awesome! it's older and the video is kind of plain compared to PSY and the wacko Bon Bon Bon, but it was on heavy rotation at my place a few yrs back

*** MUST WATCH PONPONPON *****
ReplyDelete;)
That video is all kinds of awesome!!! I may just have to horsey dance all around work today!
ReplyDeleteIt's a pretty catchy song. I think my favorite wth parts are the little boy dancing (great moves), the guy in the elevator, and the pull back of him in the tux on the toilet. :) Thank goodness I can close the door of my office!
Awww! So cool!
ReplyDeleteLove it! I was stationed in Korea 10 years ago and we're about to go back so the K-pop this morning was a hilariously fantastic way to start my day as the movers come to pack up my stuff. I think the best part for me were the completely random stuff. For some reason, the shot of the two ajimas (sp?) power walking backwards was the best! I can't count the times I would see the Korean ladies trying to power walk backwards. :)
ReplyDeleteThe pon pon way way song... I didn't see that the first time around, so I'll comment on it here.
ReplyDeleteShe's basically the Japanese version of Lady Gaga (only not as racy). She's known for being cute but extremely weird. She's pretty popular right now and is in a lot of advertisements, including a special summer-time KFC (yes, KFC) promotion. (PS, I live in Japan.)
And that was a music video, not a commercial. :)
I can't....stop...watching.....and DANCING!
ReplyDeleteSo fun !! thanks for the advice to be at home to watch :)
ReplyDeleteHO.LY. CRAP.
ReplyDeleteThat was awesome.
I gotta see if you can buy that song because it should be part of the workout playlist.
With practice i feel like i can learn the horsey dance, but that sideways circle thing that he does around the guy in yellow at the very end... i'm not even sure how his legs DO that.
Thanks so much for sharing.
It's been stuck in my head ALL DAY. Crazy, but at least it's funny!
ReplyDeleteIs anyone else as impressed as I am by how shiny, clean, and well-lit the parking garage is?
ReplyDeleteI am pretty sure you have started a new trend in our house. Dancing like that while singing guy on a buffalo.
ReplyDeletePon Pon is my go-to happy song, its impossible to be sad while watching...This is now going on my superhappyfuntime playlist on youtubes
ReplyDeleteIt's like a cross between Run DMC and Ricky Martin!
ReplyDeleteYou know, I don't know normally want to be a back-up dancer in a music video - but this is one of them!! Oh, but I think I might have to take the space of two Korean girls in that vid! ;D
ReplyDeletePSY rocks really hard. I wish American music vids were this funny.
Another great international music vid is from the Indian movie - 3 Idiots.
Check it out at: http://youtu.be/S-LltgOtFSg
Rhiannon: thanks for the link--will try to look up some PopAsia! And I did not know there was a term for this music. Good to know!
ReplyDeleteSeriousCat:
Kyuhyun!
; )
Ha! That's awesome. Totally tossing that in my work out mix. I will so do the horsey dance every time.
ReplyDeleteThis is my new favorite video. EVER!
ReplyDeletePlease tell me this is an annual thing now, and that every year in the first few days of August we'll get a hilarious and bizarre non-English music video! Maybe we could make it a holiday, but what would it be called? Hmmm
ReplyDeleteHA! I didn't fall for it and watch Pon again. I did laugh my way through Psy's video all three times I watched it. Kpop may give Bollywood a run for the money in my guilty pleasures list now. :D I also clicked Blessed's link for Super Junior and wished I was 20 years younger.
ReplyDelete-Barbara Anne
Sharyn, I read your comment to my daughter, and she said, "Some people are just awesome." :-D
ReplyDeleteI watched and laughed through this video. Then, because I'm a glutton for punishment, I guess, I watched "Pon Pon Pon." However, about halfway through my computer had had enough and Flash Player crashed. LOL
OK, I had to show this to my son (1 1/2 times--he came in partway through and asked, "What IS this?" so I had to show him again from the beginning. Then I showed him Pon Pon Pon, and watched it again myself when it was over. It's bizarre and weird and inexplicable, yet I can't look away and feel compelled to watch over and over.
ReplyDeleteAnd yeah, now all that I can hear when I watch this one is "open condom style," so thanks to Cici et al. for that. :-P
My husband is half Korean, so I found this especially hysterical. Maybe I can talk him into doing the dance. ;)
ReplyDeleteOMG!!! I just rofl. It sounds like he's saying something about a "Condom" and the pony dance is hilarious!
ReplyDeleteHave you seen "McKayla is not impressed" on Tumblr? I thought of you when I saw this one.
ReplyDeleteThe very best is to get them to synch up and watch both at the SAME TIME!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI am not sure the Bubble Pop girl is a good addition, but I love this video so so much that I can over look it :)
ReplyDeleteA friend from Japan just sent me this one. I think it's just as awesome.
ReplyDeleteI find it ironic that the second "female" version seems to be the kind of glossy KPop video that Psy mocks in the original. Her voice is a little too Betty Boop-ish for me. I still love the original.
ReplyDeleteOh, Korea. My friend and I used to watch Korean music videos all the time when we were in high school. It was an amazing time. Clon was awesome. This was epic, thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI have nostalgia now lol.
OMG! He's wearing MC Hammer-type pants at the end of the new one! Now its complete! ROFL! :)
ReplyDeletean open letter to the men of the world: please wear bright white shirts and bling tuxedos from now on. ROWR
ReplyDelete-Barbara Anne
P.S. I think "more horsey dancing" was needed AND that phrase needs to supplant "more cowbell"
I watched this when you first posted it and thought it was fantastic and hilarious. Then I just read this article and realized it was even more fantastic than I thought at first.
ReplyDeleteChek out this "BABY" GANGNAM STYLE PARODY!
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7iheCrwQQlI&feature=g-u-u
I think this will absolutely make your day- A Klingon Style parody of this video. Enjoy!
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CayMeza487M&feature=youtu.be
She is saying "Oppan ddak nae style" which means Oppa is just my style, rather that "Oppan Gangnam style" which means Oppan is gangnam style
ReplyDeleteIts a parody, she is immitating the way girls in Gangnam speak
:)
