Saturday Steam: Macy's Awesome Steampunk Holiday Windows

I've had several people mention Macy's steampunk-themed holiday displays in New York this week, and WOW, are they worth a look:

Hey Mishka has some fabulous close-up shots like this:

...which is no easy feat, since everything in these windows is in constant motion!

In fact, the pictures can't do any of this justice, so here's a video:

(When I first saw this, I was all "what? Ten whole minutes?!" And then the next thing I knew, the video was over. There's just so much to see!)

There's also a slick edited version by Hey Mishka here, but it's mostly close-ups and made me kind of dizzy to watch. Still, it will give you all the major highlights if you only have a few minutes to spare.

As you can see, the theme is kind of a rocket ship/fairy/steampunk mashup, which will probably anger the purists but is a perfect example of why I think rule-breaking is awesome. It's art - how can you have rules on art?

Oh, and I spent forever tracking down those limited edition ornaments mentioned on the Make-A-Wish windows (Macy's website is really not cooperative here), and was bitterly disappointment to find they're not themed to match the windows. Boo! Still you can take a look at them all here.

  2. This makes me think of what they *could* have done with "Horizons" at Epcot, if they'd refurbished it instead of mowing it down! :P So neat!

  3. Jen!! You should have seen the Bergdorf Goodman windows last year! They were absolutely astounding, with lots of decorations like an old typewriter (much like yours) a really cool divers helmet, an awesome balloon (for flying) and lots of maps. You should try to find some pictures!

  4. Aw, man, these windows were still blocked up when we went last month! They had the gear portholes, but you couldn't see in. Boo, I wish I could've seen them!

  6. Oh. My. Word! I may have to visit my cousin in New York this year! That is if I can talk the hubby into it after going to Mickey's Christmas Party at the Magic Kingdom first! :^D

  8. Tried to follow the link to see the ornaments, but it just went to the gift guide. :(

  9. @ Erica - Drat, it kept doing that to me, too. For some reason it won't let you link directly to the ornament collection - you have to click "gifts from our stars" on the main gift page site, and then the celebrity ornaments link will pop up on the bottom of the next page. (Who designed this? Yeesh!)

They're really not worth the effort, but here, I think I can link to one individually: Ralph Lauren Bear Ornament The others are stuff like a gold coin (from Donald Trump) and a chef's hat (from Emeril).

  10. Macy's in San Francisco has the same windows. Plus, they have kittens in the windows you can adapt through the local SPCA!

  11. I asked my husband today if he knew what steampunk was. He said that it has something to do with gears or something.... I laughed so hard, I guess his only exposure to steampunk so far is my singing just glue some gears on it.

I am so much more geeky than him, and that is saying alot.

  12. Hi Jen - First of all, let me just say how much I looove Epbot! You are amazing :)

Now, I also wanted to let you know that my incredible friend Laura Lee helped to make this window, along with the other holiday windows in NYC. She has a great blog which chronicles her adventures in window dressing. You should check it out:

  19. Omigosh! they are in SF TOO???? Now i really want to go see (I'd about given up on Holiday decor in Dept stores of later years) Thanks so much for posting this.

  20. Although I found the windows to be beautiful, I thought the purpose was to show off Macy's wares! I don't see the correlation between the windows and what is inside the store.

  21. Hi Jen,
I just got back from a semester in London and the Harvey Nichols' window displays aren't exactly steampunk, but I thought you'd appreciate them all the same :)This blog has some good pictures of them: http://smudgetikka.wordpress.com/2011/11/09/harvey-nichols-frozen-christmas-window-display-for-xmas-2011/

  22. SF was SO disappointing. Yes they have placed 250 animals in new Forever homes(Yay) but there were only two Steampunk windows with only one wiggling flat faced marionette apiece, no computerized screens, no 3d doll like marionettes, no depth. was no shortage of windows, but they were the usuall "whats for sale in the store" windows.
