Nostalgia Rocks

This week the interwebz have seen fit to pander to my geek girl sensibilities by showering me with goodies from not one, but two of my all-time favorite movies.

First, you've probably already seen The Princess Bride cast reunion on GMA (and if not, it's here) but tonight I just found an even better clip from their EW photo shoot:

Can't. Stop. Grinning. And how amazing is it that Billy Crystal kept the hat?

Kristy J. just shared this on the Epbot FB page, too:

It was shared on imgur, but I'm guessing it's from the EW website. Click for full-size to see all the great details. (Now I have to hunt down this issue and buy it!)

And next, Deena shared this fun acapella rendition of one of my favorite songs from Labyrinth:

She tells me they used it at Geek Girl Con last weekend as a sing-along. JEALOUS.

Speaking of which, Katie-the-Star-Wars-girl and her mom Carrie were both at GGC, and Carrie wrote a sweet post about it here. (Don't miss the ending!) From the few reviews I've heard so far, it sounds like it was a great con - I'm looking forward to hearing more from you readers who were there!

  1. Thanks, Jen! My husband has been going on and on about the short clip he saw of the Princess Bride Reunion and wanted to see more. Now I can just show him your post. =)

It's been a long time since we watched that movie (that we constantly quote) - now I want to dig it out!

  2. Speaking of The Princess Bride (and yesterday's post about cross stitch,) Have you seen
    this?

  3. Seriously this is the best thing to happen to me all week. Oh I love the Bowie cover, so good. :)

    Have fun storming the castle!

  4. LOL! I was going to send you a post on EPBOT on FB today to let you know about the magazine! I got mine in the mail on Saturday, which means it's on the stands this week.

My new nephew's initials are MLT...I laugh everytime I think about it.

USELESS TRIVIA: Prince Humperdink is also the voice for Jack Skellington in Nightmare Before Christmas. Not the singing voice, however--Danny Elfman is Jack's singing voice.

  5. I *love* the memorial pic for Andre the Giant. I have always hated the "sport" of televised wrestling, but he was a sweet man, and is sorely missed!

  6. I love the ROUS in the corner! I missed it the first time I saw this photo on Facebook.

  7. When my kids left for school the other day I yelled Have fun storming the castle! My daughter gave me a strange look. I think we need to review her Princess Bride quotes.

  8. Ok, Monday I created business cards, and no lie - this is one of them.

Of course, I wasn't allowed to even know of the existence of Labyrinth when I was young - I saw it for the first time in my 20s and laughed at my husband when he told me he'd gotten nightmares as a kid.

But Princess Bride - I'm pretty sure we wore out the VHS rental from Video Villa.

  9. The EW article is wonderful. They all seem like truly nice people are just as much in love with the movie as everyone else. I was dragged to that movie when it came out - I didn't want to see a pirate movie - and I was on the edge of my seat the whole time.

My dad used to say "have fun storming the castle" when I'd go back to college after being home. He passed away 6 years ago and it's one of my favorite little moments I go back to all the time.

  10. I feel completely lame that I can't figure this out, but who is the other picture (behind Westley) of a cast member that has passed?
There is one of Andre at Robin Wright's feet. Who is the one behind Cary Elwes? It's killing me!

  11. And of course I just now remembered! It's Peter Falk!!!!
How could I forget?! Shame on Kelly.

  13. I can't comment on Katie's Mom's blog, but I know you will pass it along. It made me smile to read it and cry a little (in a good way). Very uplifting and great to see Katie doing so well.

  14. Looks like Katie had a great time with all the geek gals at GGC. Wish I lived closer to attend that great event.

My husbands favorite movie is the Princess Bride and he walks around saying "hello my name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die"...I know he will love the issue of EW, guess I will be a good wifey and get it for him.

Thanks for the great BLOG Jen. I love all the geeky goodness!

  16. Love the picture! Oh how I love the Princess Bride!

  17. This is awesome :) and even more awesome? When "Wesley" shows up as a really clever British robber in your favorite TV show :)

  18. Well, that made me happy!

(As did the fact that my WV was "mermen.")

  19. Didja see James Hance's Labyrinth/Star Wars Mash-up? It's FANTASTIC!!!!

  20. My husband gets E Weekly, and I always read them (who am I kidding "we" get it, but I let him think it's "his" subscription). I deVOURED this reunion issue on Saturday. Something Mandy Patinkin said in the article actually moved me to tears.

  21. Thanks Jen! We love Princess Bride and my kids had a blast watching Labyrinth for the first time at Geek Girl Con, which we totally give you all the credit for telling us about with enough time for us to actually go!

We have written (and are continuing through the week) to feature our experience at Geek Girl Con over on my little blog.

  22. I teared up when I read "honor guard." That is super sweet!

  23. Oh, tears of joy! I've been on a Princess Bride kick lately- even before I saw the EW article- and I'm so happy to see these videos, and hear from the cast that they had such a great time. I could watch hours of this kind of footage. PB is truly a unique & special movie. Thanks for sharing the links.

  24. You have made my day! This is beyond awesome.
    Useless trivia:
The hat Rob Reiner wore in the Spinal Tap movie is hanging on the coat rack in Fred Savage's room.
Also, if you read the book (which you really, really should)keep in mind that the fiction starts on the first page, well before the first chapter and William Goldman is a genius and a big fat liar :)

  25. Wait- in the PB reunion pic- why is Christopher Guest leaning on the horse's ass? Shouldn't Chris Sarandon be there instead??

    evil grin

  27. A few weeks ago I showed a clip of Princess Bride in my 6th grade class becuase one of our words of the week was "inconceivable." Only 3 or 4 kids knew the movie...how tragic is that?!

    ReplyDelete
  28. This post gave me all kinds of warm fuzzies. I'm not sure if I liked the Princess Bride reunion or the post from Katie's mom better.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Am I the only one who can't get the sound to work on the Princess Bride video? :(

    ReplyDelete
  30. I was going to be disappointed if you didn't post this here. I am not disappointed. Saw it on FB and immediately thought of you!!

  31. Now you have gone and made me cry. First, I love Princess Bride, especially the book and I adore Katie, fellow geek girl. What a wonderful blog about her trip to Seattle. I am awed. That is what geekdom is all about.

  32. Off to the store to buy my copy! I don't usually buy magazines... I just check things out online... but this is a special circumstance!!

  33. SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

(these are my two favorite movies and you totally just made my day. xoxo)

    ReplyDelete
  34. I LOVE this! We have a theatrical size Princess Bride poster in our house and we can't wait to have our kids watch it someday. (Although, we may need to fast forward past the RUSs, as my in-laws did for my hubby so he wouldn't be scared!)

Also, I wish they would have had Fred Savage be in the picture!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I just read Katie's mom's blog post, and now I'm in tears. I guess that's the Mom in me. What a sweet and wonderful gesture.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Photo of Andre the Giant in the corner kinda made me tear up a little.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Speaking of nostalgia and movies, Jen, you did hear that there's a very limited theatrical re-release of Ghostbusters this month, right? See their facebook page for where it's playing.

    ReplyDelete
  38. 'Loved the Princess Bride info. Part of our family lexicon is, "You keep using the word. I do not think it means what you think it means." And the new Katie article was awesome. Thanks!

  39. Weird. I just yelled "Have fun storming the castle!" to Mom yesterday.

And I so wanted this shirt.

  40. This post gave me goosebumps! YEEEE!

  41. If you can't find the issue, let me know and I'll mail you my copy. (I love Entertainment Weekly. It's my only "personally purchased" mag subscription.) :)

Email me your address and I'll send.

is that supposed to prevent spam? that's the only reason I can figure people write their addresses that way. Ha.

  42. Could not keep huge, lame grin off my face. What a blast! They all seem so honoured to be part of such a funny and timeless movie. The movie is a slightly less well-known in Australia, but we still have a pretty dedicated group of castle-stormers down under. Thanks so much for making my day Jen.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Oh, wonderful post, especially about Katie! I'm so happy for her! Being a Geek is so much more socially acceptable now (when most of my coworkers know more about Big Bang Theory than soap operas, it's a step up!)

I also love the Princess Bride reunion stuff...I'll have to watch the video on my lunch break. Hee!

    ReplyDelete
  44. That better be Fred Savage in the ROUS costume. I can't believe he wouldn't show.

    ReplyDelete
  45. We are HUGE fans of both the Princess Bride and the Labyrinth! The night has officially been made.
    Thanks!!
The song and dance at the end is fantastic... especially the naming of the dance moves.

  46. Theatre near me has retro nights and I just got to see The Princess Bride at the theatre! For the first time since it did not show where I lived then.

    ReplyDelete
  47. That was so cute!

    Oooo hot tattoo idea.

And I LOVE that photo spread and how they put a framed picture of the missing cast members.

What a cute rendition. Thanks for making my Friday morning.

  48. Geek Girl Con was so much fun!!! I went with a friend and we had a blast at the Labyrinth Sing- Along! Can't wait for next year's! Love the Princess Bride stuff!

  49. We live back from the road and I yell, "Have fun storming the castle!" to my kids as they get on the bus in the mornings! (and they love it). My son is devestated because his Super Scribblenaut game won't accept ROUS.

  50. Do you watch Sanctuary? If you don't, you totally should! (Especially if you liked Stargate!)

We're a bit behind - tonight we watched the first episode from season 2, and there's totally an awesome Princess Bride quote in it. Made me squee a little bit, especially since it's been at the top of my mind since reading this blog post.

Must watch Princess Bride this weekend...
