Speaking of which, you've got to see this roundup of awesome behind-the-scenes photos from classic movies. My two favorites:
Jim Henson. Love.
For some reason it never occurred to me that there was a person inside the Stay Puft suit. Aaand now it is my life goal to be the person in a Stay Puft suit. I just have to learn how to mold a giant foam latex marshmallow man. No biggie, right? 0.o
And finally, in honor of The Rocketeer's 20th anniversary a while back, check out this amazing fan film by John Banana. It's pretty much how The Rocketeer would have looked if Pixar had made it.
Like I said: amazing.

What's making you smile today, guys?
What's making me smile? Oh, just a cute little AT-AT pancake: http://www.jimspancakes.com/2011/09/star-wars-pancakes/ :)
ReplyDeleteI'm currently watching Firefly for the first time. I'm smiling a lot :D
ReplyDeleteSchneeflink - I just finished Firefly (and Serenity is on Netflix instant watch). the only question now is - what to watch next!!!
ReplyDeleteThe newest episode of MyDrunkKitchen is out today: that's what making me smile. Thank you for introducing me to this wonderfully comic girl in your post a week back, Jen. Hopefully another thing to make you smile will know that you're making others smile as well :)
ReplyDeletei just found a new author, yay! Jessica Day George is writting some really great reads. I just finished "Princess of the Midnight Ball" and loved it!
ReplyDeleteThis guy sings barbershop quartet with himself! It sounds fabulous! Definitely bringing me a lot of ear smiles. ;)

Wow, I never thought about how uncomfortable it must be to be a muppeteer. Just look at the poor guy in Jim Henson's armpit.
ReplyDelete@Anonymous - Trudbol is fabulous, thanks for sharing the link! I'm smiling too :)
ReplyDeleteI just rewatched that scene where Peter first meets Mohinder in the TV show Heroes... which you, if you haven't, must watch. :)
ReplyDeleteI 2nd the AT-AT pancake! totally made my geeky side smile when I saw it :)
ReplyDeleteMan - I still miss Jim Henson.
ReplyDeleteWhat's making me smile (at outright laugh at one point) were these awesome presents that one of my fellow derby moms gave me last night. I was having kind of a crappy day, so it really turned it from junky to joyful in 2.5 seconds. I mean c'mon, Boba Fett BBQ? How can you NOT love that!
ReplyDeleteYour geeky posts always make me smile! But today the main source of my glee is watching my new kitten Sprocket(yeah I loved fraggle rock) play with my older cat Stormy and my pitbull Princess Leia. Hehe.
ReplyDeleteIs there going to be a full length animated Rocketeer? That would be making my day!
ReplyDeleteAnother season of Castle is making me smile. Capt. Malcom Reynolds is making me happy now that he has retired to writing crime novels under the pen name of Rick Castle.
These "family" stickers, especially the Daleks. And the stormtrooper with the bow.
ReplyDeleteAnd... Glee is back tonight! Glee Geek.
I so want to see THAT version of The Rocketeer!!!!
ReplyDeleteNot sure if you knew this already, but Saturday, September 24 would have been Jim Henson's 75th birthday. Perfect opportunity for some Muppet sweets/wrecks...? I think we should all -- at the very least -- watch our favorite Muppet movies/shows in his honor.

ReplyDeleteLeonard Nimoy wearing a Spock shirt makes me grin!
What's making me smile (and grimace) this week? Portal. That's what. You and your "free game, download now, blah blah..." I hope you're happy*. I am a 44 year old woman who may have dirty dishes and had to get take out, but I made it past those turret guns alive in one take. So there...
ReplyDelete*by happy I mean really happy, 'cuz I am!
I'm smiling that Liz has a pitbull named Princess Leia. Actually, I'm LOL. :D
ReplyDelete-Barbara Anne
I was in a major funk yesterday. Then I got behind a mini-van with a "Weasley is our King" bumper sticker on one side, and a "The Whomping Willow destroyed my other car" bumper sticker on the other. Instant mood reversal. I owe a complete stranger for turning around my day.
ReplyDeletemimimimimimimimimimimimi!
ReplyDeleteThe Bert and Ernie picture tears my heart in two. On one hand, that is an awesome picture. On the other hand, BERT AND ERNIE ARE REAL! Childhood... shattered.
ReplyDeleteWhat's making me smile? In just over 12 hours I'll be on a plane to Zurich! Sooo excited!! Also, I can not believe that Rocketeer is 20 years old, I remember going to see that at the cinema - surely I'm not that old ... :)
ReplyDeleteWell, I was going to say sunshine... but now it's John Banana!! Totally. Awe. Some! Thanks, Jen!
ReplyDeleteAnd Firefly for the first time? Oh, you poor thing - to have been so long deprived of the shiny goodness of The Ballad of Jayne!! Welcome to the wonderful world of Josh (sigh - it would rhyme better if I could remember how to spell his last name)
And now I'm smiling at a pit named Princess Leia - who needs to come hang out with my pit (knew I should have named him Luke!)
ReplyDeleteLove the Beaker Boba Fett!
ReplyDeleteI'm currently smiling because I just finished sticking a red rebel alliance symbol on both sides of my roller derby helmet (just like Luke's)! I'll be skating with style...geeky style ;)
ReplyDeleteThis guy makes me smile every time he posts: steve-in-the-goshdarned-future.tumblr.com
ReplyDeleteThis sketch from the comedy sketch show The Fast Show:

What's making me smile today?
ReplyDelete1) The fact that Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman has finally noticed a Demotivational poster I made of hime (well, actually, of George Clooney in Syriana) thirteen months ago:
http://anothermonkey.blogspot.com/2011/09/paul-krugman-finally-noticed.html
2)The fact that Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman is now using that Demotivational as a shorthand to express his mood!

I think I've made the universe a slightly funnier place. As the economy collapses around us...
I LOVE Beaker's "Ode to Joy" ornament. His mouth moves and the metronome goes back and forth as he sings - er, mis -- Ode to Joy.
ReplyDeleteBeaker's Ode to Joy

I haven't had to check any baggage, just choosing the right song to make someone else feel better somehow makes ME feel better.
what's making me smile today?? why you are, m'dear! :) thanks for sharing these--they're all pretty fantastic!! :)
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of Jim Henson, have you ever seen Farscape? Great scifi show, with creatures made by Jim Henson's Creature Shop, and all of it except the miniseries finale available on Netflix Instant. I think you would probably enjoy it :)
ReplyDeleteBert and Ernie were PUPPETS?
ReplyDeleteChildhood = ruined.
I kid, I kid :) What's making me smile? The newest Dr Who episode and that Mainstay Pro (on Youtube)has been filming scenes from the Hunger Games as audition pieces for other actors/actresses. It's wicked cool.
What's making us smile?
ReplyDeleteWe just finished watching Firefly and Serenity; thanks to you and your fans for introducing us to that awesomeness.
We have always loved behind-the-scene pictures. It is sad to remember Jim Henson. Here is the new trailer to the upcoming movie, The Muppets
A three month old Lad named Ben. Nothing makes me smile more than adorable animals!
ReplyDeletePrepare for a D'awww!!! moment!

Jen, I thought of you when I saw this ring. Gorgeous, creative, and steam punk. Perfect!
ReplyDeleteKeyhole ring
i feel like there should of been a 'spoiler alert' above the bert and ernie picture, i was not ready to see that! haha love your work jen
ReplyDeleteKnow what made me smile today? I'm at home, sick, and my hubby emailed me from work just to say he loves me and he hopes I'm resting.
ReplyDeletelove=happy
I posted the Rocketeer video for my brother who is obsessed with the movie :-) his gleeful reaction is making me smile
ReplyDeleteLOVE the chicken footprints on the ground in the Rocketeer video. Such great attention to details. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDelete@Molly Mouse - don't worry, the fact that they're puppets doesn't detract from their realness.
ReplyDeleteI was at a celebration at the Center for Puppetry Arts (in Atlanta) where Elmo was the guest of honor. The kids were running up and hugging and talking to Elmo, even though Kevin Clash was RIGHT THERE. They could see him, but they didn't see him, if you know what I mean. Elmo was still real.
WV: gleume - no need for gleume, even if Bert and Ernie are worked by Peter Sellers.
I saw the Muppet picture and my first thought was, "I hope that Jim Henson used strong deodorant!" My second thought was, "I wish that Jim Henson was still here." :-(
ReplyDeleteWhat's making me smile right now is how much I'm enjoying Neal Shusterman's "Skin Jacker" trilogy. What's making me grumpy is that my library doesn't have the third one yet.
I'm smiling at the thought of the tutorial you'll do after you make the StayPuft costume.
ReplyDeleteWow. It never occurred to me that there was an actual person in the Stay Puft Man, either. It is actually disturbing to me that I never even wondered how they did it - I just kind of assumed they made a giant robotic one, I guess. Anyway, that picture is completely awesome.
ReplyDeleteWhat is making me smile, is that my 3 daughters went to a matinee and together. That my son and my husband were laughing together at the dinner table! And that i'm leaving tomorrow to go to Disney World with 3 of my sisters!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteHelped a friend a bit to make a Doraemon costume. He's this giant earless cat-like thing with a kangaroo pouch. It took a lot of chicken wire, foam rubber sheets, spray can foam insulation and hundreds of hours of work, and she nearly died from heat exhaustion once in the costume. How about a version of this fun burlesque Stay Puft instead? I'm sure your man would approve! ;-p (That last link is NSFW, but just barely.)
ReplyDeleteMary Jane's wv made me laugh out loud, literally'!
ReplyDeleteAlex Dreamz -- Joss Whedon, as in "Joss Whedon is my master now". Or "Thanks, Joss. Now I hate leaves."
And to Anonymous [no relation:)] Check out "Dollhouse" if you haven't seen it. I'll also highly recommend "Castle" (watch for the "Firefly" in jokes!)
Has it been 20 years since The Rocketeer came out already? I loved that movie growing up.
ReplyDeleteI just spent several minutes looking at the behind the scenes photos and loved every minute of it.
ReplyDeleteI miss Jim Henson...seeing him at work with Frank Oz brings back so many good memories of my childhood...both Sesame Street and the original Muppet Show. Why can't all television be that good?
Hey Jen, I was browsing the Geekery section of Etsy (as always!) and came across these little cuties and thought of you!
ReplyDeleteWhat's making me smile? I got engaged. In a photo booth. At the LA county fair.
ReplyDeleteI've attached a link to the photos taken while he was actually popping the question. My expression in the first picture is pretty darn hilarious (click on the photo to zoom in).
Enjoy!
