The Song John Won't Stop Singing

I DARE YOU TO WATCH THE WHOLE THING.

And the weirdest part?

No, not the faceless chubby dancer. Not the Barbie doll and banana hair clip. Not the stream of eyeball vomit, or the giant femur floating through the window, or even this new facial tic.

[twitchtwitchtwitch]

No, it's that I think that was a Kraft Macaroni and Cheese commercial.

o.O

Thanks, Dave B.

I think.

  2. i'm rather partial to the bird vomit. and the whole fating-a-"rainbow" bit.

  3. Wow. Way way pon pon pon... Epic. I may never be the same again!

WV: unpot - what the makers of the video had been smoking?

    ReplyDelete
  4. The only thing that would make this better is seeing this girl compete on the next Women of Ninja Warrior episode!

    ReplyDelete
  5. Well poop, I want to watch it but it's unavailable in my country [Germany].. as are most of the videos I want to see. Can't wait to get back to America! I'll come back to this post and watch it.. 3 months and counting!

    ReplyDelete
  6. Ugh - that is the stuff of nightmares! EVen my 3 tr old said "What is playing? Watch a different one?"

    ReplyDelete
  7. Well thats something I wish I didn't have stuck in my head. The chubby faceless dancer is the stuff of nightmares!!

    ReplyDelete
  8. Possibly? But I think maybe, since I spotted a bunch of junk food, maybe it's one of those after school special type songs? Get up and move and put down the pocky and mac-n-cheese and take your eyeballs for a ride on a unicycle? With your dinosaur? So your femur will be healthy? ... I got nothin'.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Well, the chubby dancer can dance... More rhythm than I have in my big toe! Sad about not having a face. So scary! I'm about to send this to my friend who is studying in Japan for the summer for some reassurance that this is NOT typical of Japanese commercials. Because, I think you're right, it might be an advertisement, and that's the worst part.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I watched the whole thing... I can't help but feel that I was being brainwashed to do something horrible.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I thought 'eyeball vomit' was a figurative reference to all the graphics. It wasn't.

But please, do tell me that John not long sings this, but does the dances as he founces about the house.

    ReplyDelete
  12. she does look pretty good with a moustache though.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Lord, that was the longest four minutes of my life. I'm feeling you on the facial tic...

    ReplyDelete
  14. Look! Toast appears and arranges itself when I clap!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Great now we are probably all brainwashed and can be triggered by a secret phrase(Mac&cheese perhaps)to do dirty deeds.
I second the commentor who asked what the makers were smoking

    ReplyDelete
  16. er, i fat-fingered that response. FARTING, not fating.

    ReplyDelete
  17. WHAT. was. that!!!???
Lisa Frank on an acid trip?
The undualting bubblegum head. I want to vomit.

    ReplyDelete
  18. well. that was disturbing. i think i'll go curl up in a fetal position in preparation for defense against those chubby faceless lunch lady dancers of doom that will be invading my nightmares tonight. maybe they will throw eyeballs and femur bones at me. *shudder*
-kate the girl who is now afraid of colorful obese dancing faceless, well you get the idea

  19. Watched the whole thing. I think I'm scarred, and a little obsessed. Apparently, the singer is a Harajuku blogger and model, Kyary Pamyu Pamyu. Interesting post at http://patrickmacias.blogs.com/er/2011/07/on-ponponpon-.html including a sketchy translation of the song's lyrics.

WV: odoodse - after the makers of the video finished smoking the unpot, what they began their statements with, as in "Odoodse all the floating eyeballs? We should totally use them."

    ReplyDelete
  20. Pon pon way way way, way way way pon way pon pon, way way pon pon pon, way way pon way pon way way... dear lord I will be singing this all afternoon...

    ReplyDelete
  21. based on the eyes printed on her clothes, and the general trippiness, I suspect Takashi Murakami is involved. which makes this awesome, in an intentionally-surreal pop-art kind of way.

    ReplyDelete
  22. After watching the whole thing through...well, you dared me jen!...I can say with certainty that that was really weird. I saw some fiddle faddle, mac and cheese, eyeballs and brains. And, yeah...what was up with that rainbow fart? What the heck is this?!?!?!

...i think I'm having a nervous breakdown trying to figure this out.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I watched the video without sound (I'm at work, so I have to be sneaky, lol!). I'm pretty sure I'm going to have a headache for the rest of the day now - that video was brutal! I don't think I will be watching it again with the sound.

    Thanks for sharing?

    ReplyDelete
  24. You can tell they're selling something because of the pogo stick; pogo sticks SELL, baby!

I think it's some kind of creepy after-school special/music video/acid-trip about the dangers of too much junk food and Lisa Frank products.

    ReplyDelete
  25. We definitely need this translated...

    ReplyDelete
  26. I watched all of it. Tell John he can only sing the song if he also does the dance.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Sad. Can't see it in Germany. :(

    ReplyDelete
  28. I'm going to go stab pointy things into my ears and eyes now. Thank you.

Also, my WV is "vaggies" what the heck kind of a website are you running here?!?!?

    ReplyDelete
  29. rough translation I found:

"at the intersection, surely everyone skips

So I think it's about embracing your inner kid/letting your freak flag fly...maybe?

    ReplyDelete
  30. I think this is what they show crazy people to make them sane.....

    ReplyDelete
  31. It's just a music video actually XD The girl who's in it is a model, and this is her first song. The designer for the Japanese brand 6% Doki Doki designed the video.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I've got a budding migraine and it was an awful idea to watch that. I think it spurred the headache on.

    My eyes won't focus properly.

    My wv: soasms
-what a contestant on Project Runway has when they get super excited about something they've sewn.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I couldn't back down from a dare. I wish I had waited until you at least triple dog dared me. :P That was quite possibly the weirdest thing I have ever seen.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Really cute kid.....the video....not so cute, lol!!! Um, wow....thanks Jen. Can't unsee that now!

(And I may be singing that in my head the rest of the day...dang catchy tune!)

    ReplyDelete
  35. Another translation, that makes slightly more sense (in as much as that's possible) http://wonkytranslation.blogspot.com/2011/07/blog-post.html

    ReplyDelete
  36. Jen, I know you love Jon, but--if I were you--I would have left him after the first time he sang it.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Did she fart rainbows at 1:29? I think she farted rainbows at 1:29. Also, I may be having a panic attack after watching this. It's like that Simpson's episode where the Homer dishwashing soap causes people to have seizures.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Yes, I did watch it all, and my 10 yr old son did also. He thought it funny. I also wonder what lies beneath to brainwash us...

    ReplyDelete
  39. OMG! My coworker showed me that video last week and I told him he's the one I'm calling at 3 in the morning when I'm afraid the faceless Granny is hiding under my bed.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Director: Lets take every single graphic we have, all those mismatch toys too... and throw them into one video... add a model to it.. and make her sing.. THAT should get some attention!

    *crickets chirping* Director: I SAID!!
Rest of video cast: OH! YES! That sounds great! *praise for "intelligent" director*

I laughed SO hard when I saw this that I had to watch it twice all the way through just to catch all of the craziness. That is how you make a 'memorable' music video that doubles as a scary movie! O.o

    ReplyDelete
  41. Ok, I watched the whole thing. Do I win a prize? Cuz I think my brain just melted.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I've seen a lot of postings disparaging this video. I actually kinda like it. It reminds me of Devo or Weird Al's Dare to be Stupid or Pee Wee's Play House. It's got a weird 80's Tim Burton-esque using culture in a counter culture Pop vibe to it. It's creative, different, dand it's catchy.

    ReplyDelete
  43. That room is pretty much exactly out of my childhood imagination! Amazing!

    ReplyDelete
  44. This makes me so happy, especially after seeing a translation. Bounce!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Wow, that's different. I started looking around for River just to see if she would go all ninja warrior to this like in Serenity.

    ReplyDelete
  46. sweet jesus, what the hell was that. O.o

i think i may have been brain washed and will now go crazy in a bar and beat everyone up until my brother says the magic words to make me fall asleep.

WordVerificational :: ingentsi - is that like the intelligentsi? but not quite? like, the junior kind? who were obviously not present when this video was made.....

    ReplyDelete
  47. that is crazy and a half. oh my. you weren't kidding about the afternoon getting weirder.

    ReplyDelete
  48. If I go all Super Oaty Bars now and take out a whole room with my mad assassin skills after watching this, I don't think any jury would convict me.

    ReplyDelete
  49. This is what it would look like if H.P. Lovecraft decided to do a "Pee-Wee's Playhouse"-style children's show. Except it would have more cats.

    ReplyDelete
  50. CLEARLY!!! This video is about global warming. +1 on the comment about this needing to be on the next Katamari sound track.

This video was like a 4 minute sugar tripping unicorn ride through the brain of the bill nye the science guy and Andy Warhol's love child.

wv: ousnip... "Ousnip that last 4 minutes out of my brain, please!" lol JK... I actually... liked? it? I think? Suddenly I want marshmallows.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Well I'm never gonna be able to scrub that from my brain. Kinda liked the faceless, chubby, lunch lady bustin' a move though. Way, Pon, Dude!

    ReplyDelete
  52. Ick. And I agree with all of the above. I gave up after 15 seconds.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I watched it all. I read all the comments. Are we sure this wasn't the new Katy Perry video for "Last Friday Night?" No? Okay, if you are sure. I think the pantaloons might catch on. I need some Exedrin.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Get something else in my head. Now. Please.

    ReplyDelete
  55. If it weren't for my horse, I wouldn't have spent that year in college. I feel a brain aneurysm coming.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I let my 3 year old watch this with me. Her response "It's cute mom". Personally, I am trying to stop seizuring.

    Nat

    ReplyDelete
  57. What do I win that I watched the whole thing?

And may have a costume idea for Dragon*Con?

    ReplyDelete
  58. My friend posted that on facebook last week! Sorry Jen, I'm not watching it again! LOL.

I think I saw more of her videos on youtube. Too scared to watch any more of them! :P

    ReplyDelete
  59. I was thinking the same thing about the Mac and Cheese box!!!

    ReplyDelete
  60. I've lost so many brain cells watching this.
It does remind me of an ad for Lisa Frank on acid though.
Hopefully something less annoying will get stuck in my head quickly!

    ReplyDelete
  61. Clearly, if you eat special mushrooms and watch this backwards, it's the answer to our budget crisis.

    ReplyDelete
  62. It would be stuck in my head now, but for some reason I keep reverting to the lazy town song....

    Pon Pon digga rigga dong
Funny words I sing when I am dancing

    ReplyDelete
  63. I don't think it's a commercial. From the little I can understand of Japanese it's just a song about being happily in love. Or possibly just friendship. But people making each other happy, at any rate.

My Japanese is woeful, I apologize.

oh mi gosh. that video has the creepy/totally entrancing effect going for it...no contest. AHHH!!

    ReplyDelete
  65. I am seriously afraid that there was some creepy subliminal message in that thing and you will find me robbing banks at 3am and saying "the eyeball vomit told me to"

    ReplyDelete
  66. Good lord. I just watched the whole thing. Twice. The thing that bothers me the most though? This:

Why did her head turn into a ditto?

    ReplyDelete
  67. WTH???

Farting rainbows, bleeding eye, vomiting all manner of sundry items, pre-pubescent tiny girls in florescent face paint- and totally nonsensical lyrics?

    Who WOULDN'T love this?!?

    ReplyDelete
  68. I think I just had a seizure!

    ReplyDelete
  69. It's oddly mesmerizing.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Holy Mother of God! It makes a Carmen Miranda movie look like an Amish funeral. Had no problem with watching it after I hit the mute button. What disturbs me is that like Barnie Benton in the 70's, there are no character lines whatsoever in the girl's face. As if her brain had never been troubled by a single thought ever.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Ow. What just happened? Wow. That was weird. (But I watched the whole thing. Do I get a prize?!)

    ReplyDelete
  72. The main line here is bread... "pon" in Japanese means bread. Therefore, the toast flying around :\

My bf (more versed in things Japanese than me) thinks the faceless dancer is referring to a popular fad in Japan. The term blackface (or "Ganguro" in Japanese) is the trend of people tanning their skin darkly and wearing blonde or orange hair. Hopefully that wasn't too much information :)

And my bf's reaction to the video? "If your brain is about to explode, yell 'Japan levels critical!'"

Cute in excess to the point of vomiting is very Japanese, lol

WV: "fablutie"... this video was very fablutie

    ReplyDelete
  73. After reading an article about it, I STILL don't understand it, but I also am not a fan of pop music in general.

Also--glad I am not the only one who thought of Lisa Frank when I saw this!! Do they even still make Lisa Frank stuff? I used to have a ton of those school supplies...

    ReplyDelete
  74. If I admit to having seen this at least three times before this post and watching and giggling every time, does that make me weird?

    ReplyDelete
  75. No, I dare you to watch all of this...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7PjTF_0Ed6s

    ReplyDelete
  76. Now I want to see John doing that little dance.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Mercy. I just watched the whole thing. Twice. And I was thinking that if I ever had children, this would be the video I would threaten them with to make them behave. But it's odd because looking back on it now, I can't really remember it...or much of the last ten minutes for that matter...

    ReplyDelete
  78. ponpon wayway pon

I almost gave up around 2:47, but didn't want to back down from a dare so i watched the whole thing.
I got dosed at a party in college once and my memories of that make more sense than this video. Really.
I'm not sure i ever recovered from the very beginning when the microphone came out of her ear.
    Why, people, why?

I guess ponpon way ponpon is the only answer we'll ever get.

    ReplyDelete
  79. It. just. keeps. going.

And I agree - that song has imbedded a trigger so we all do crazy things for the government when we see mac & cheese. Or femurs. or lisa frank items. or eyeballs?

    ReplyDelete
  80. I actually liked it...
But then again, I'm into video editing and special effects, so that might have something to do with it...

    ReplyDelete
  81. I think my Japanese obsessed daughter has poisoned my brain because I thought it was cute and catchy. I probably need to get out more...

    ReplyDelete
  82. my poor little synapses stopped firing somewhere in the second minute- the sound you heard shortly after that was my brain exploding. apparently liking anime doesn't mean I like all Japanese pop culture. :D

so, Jen's into steampunk and John likes Lolli girls? LOL

    -Barbara Anne

  83. Wow, that really should have had some dancing Tarako Kewpies in it. Want to see some weird Japanese commercials with a jingle that will get stuck in your brain, just search Tarako on YouTube.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Serena, I wondered the same thing about Lisa Frank. Apparently, they DO still make that stuff!

    Lisa Frank

    Stationary Set

    ReplyDelete
  85. My favorite YouTube comments about this: "The director had two things in his hands, a joint and a crack pipe" and "Oh my God, it's like a Toys-R-Us threw up on this video."

    ReplyDelete
  86. Dear lord that is creepy and trippy and oddly catchy

    ReplyDelete
  87. My brother and I sat and watched this entire video, and this was our response:

Me: ....did that chick just fart rainbows?!

    Him: *hysterical laughter*

    Wow.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Re: wvs - Are there a lot of "Says You" fans here?

wv: midiv - a diversion that happens midway through a diversion. "This video was a collection of midivs."

    ReplyDelete
  89. Weak sauce! Not Japan's craziest thing I've seen! :p And it's catchy too!

    ReplyDelete
  90. Ahhh! What the heck was that about? I'm a little scared now! And it was so upbeat! I can't help but think it's about murder...

And what exactly was coming out of her rear end?

    ReplyDelete
  91. Wow, I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought Fruity Oaty Bars! If that DIDN'T have subliminal messaging in there I'm going to be disappointed. :p

    ReplyDelete
  92. Um... Wow. The weirdest part for me is the fact that the ad that is displaying next to the video on your blog is for Charmin, advertising that you can find clean public toilets at blogHer 11 using their free "sit or squat" app. Somehow it fits perfectly.

    ReplyDelete
  93. I will never make fun of "Toddlers and Tiaras" again...

    ReplyDelete
  94. I think it's a jab at american consumerism...

    overload! overload!!

    ReplyDelete
  95. I'm glad I'm not the only one who wanted to say "miranda" after watching that! Watch out before all assassin on you! Oh! Shiny! :)
And now it's stuck in my head, thanks a lot Jen!

    ReplyDelete
  96. And some people think we'll easily communicate on a comprehensible level with beings from ANOTHER PLANET when we're entirely boggled by our own species only an ocean away.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Yikes. That's what my dreams (nightmares?) look like when I spike a fever.

    ReplyDelete
  98. For some reason, I'm hungry now for Fiddle Faddle. And Kraft Mac and Cheese.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Well, I am clearly too old for this. I find my eye twitching and I'm now afraid of random stuff flying through my house. And who is Lisa Frank? And why should I care?
I got half way through it, does that mean I'm half-brainwashed? If I suddenly start doing that dance, I'm suing somebody.

    ReplyDelete
  100. I watched it fully.... like 7 times heheh....

    ReplyDelete
  101. I thought it was fantastic I haven't seen such an interesting mix of kitschy-pop-ness and dark imagery well ever really. I mean floating clocks, ravens, skulls, faceless dancers, and tanks drowning in a sea of neon fluff and junk food fantastic, I think I want more.

    ReplyDelete
  102. I see Wonka Bottle Caps.
    I'm confused now.

    ReplyDelete
  103. I don't think its for Kraft mac and cheese but there was definite product placement. Very odd, I wish I knew what it was about...

    ReplyDelete
  104. I'm also craving dome Katamari playing, it seems to be the popular thing, I'm gonna go with the trend on this one.

Also, I may have that song stuck in my head now, it overthrew Katy Perry in an epic battle, my brain thanks you

    ReplyDelete
  105. I wanted so much to watch the whole way through, but i couldn't do it. 2.13 minutes.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Wow. I just watched it all. I wish I hadn't. I'm about to go to bed, and now I'm going to have nightmares...

    ReplyDelete
  107. The video did not disturb me. The fact that the video didn't even garner an eye twitch? Now THAT disturbed me. *slowly backs away from the anime/manga/J-Pop* I think I need a break...

    ReplyDelete
  108. I do not care what this video is about - IT. IS. AMAZING.

I love Japan. Japan needs no explanation. Japan defies explanation, so it is pointless to try.

Just sit back and enjoy it. :D

    ReplyDelete
  109. I think someone has been watching hitchhikers quide to the galaxy while on LSD...

    ReplyDelete
  110. BWAHAHAHA...my brother is flying home from France to Oregon on Thursday with his 8- and 4- yr old boys.

Now I just need to find a way for them to watch it repeatedly on the flight...yes, my brother tortured me as a child. Why do you ask?

    WV: upses
Upses, I should have known better than to have accepted Jen's dare.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Is your husband doing the dance yet? That was frighteningly surreal... :S

    ReplyDelete
  112. I'm going to have this song stuck in my head for the rest of the week, I just know it. Curse you, Jen! o.O

Also, the faceless chubby dancer grew on me after a while... she's just so pumped about life! :D

    ReplyDelete
  113. If you want a video that is catchier and far less traumatizing, look up Hatsune Miku Leekspin (the techno remix is best, but they're all pretty awesome). I'd link it but YouTube is blocked. Another funny Japanese commercial is for the Ippon Manzoku Bar. Win!

    ReplyDelete
  114. And now reading the comments, I am comforted that I am not the only one who feared River would come in and go all ninja on my ass.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Ohmagosh, that just got more and more disturbing.

After she farted the rainbow, which I liked. :)

    ReplyDelete
  116. Here's a song he really won't want to stop singing: Baby Ride Your Firebolt -- a "Firework" spoof for Harry Potter fans.

    ReplyDelete
  117. Muwhahahahahaha!! I linked it to a relative and he called me this morning to tell me he hated me... He was on his 5 time watching it!! LOL! Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  118. Suddenly I have the urge to kill the Prime Minister of Malaysia.

    OBEY MY DOG!

    ReplyDelete
  119. I watched it all. All of it. Now I have about ten mental scars (five from this video, five from the past *shudders*) and I'm totally showing this to my brother, and then posting it on google buzz.

    ReplyDelete
  120. I watched the whole thing, but I have no idea what I watched!!!

    ReplyDelete
  121. what disturbs me is the use of VHS still, I mean realy

    ReplyDelete
  122. Catchy.

My son totally got hypnotize form the video, yelling wow at the end.

Well it's better than their "cheesy" pubs they got here...

WV: Exica. The exica is just to your left ,down the hall.

    ReplyDelete
  123. I must have blacked out temporarily, because I missed the farting rainbows portion...or maybe my eyes and brain were momentarily too dazed to register everything.

That video makes "Fruity Oaty Bar" kinda make sense and seem subdued.

    ReplyDelete
  124. My 7-month-old LOVED it. When it was done (he stared at the computer, enraptured the whole 4 minutes) he looked up at me and sighed.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Charo + Teletubbies with a side of nuclear meltdown.

    ReplyDelete
  126. I think my eyes are bleeding

    ReplyDelete
  127. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT'S HAPPENING!!! *cries*

WV: Consu. As in "After watching that video, I'm pretty sure I Consu you for emotional distress."

    ReplyDelete
  128. I watched the whole thing like a trooper. Some day I long to be a faceless dancing lunch-lady!

    ReplyDelete
  129. I watched the whole thing and this has now been added to my list of costumes that I want to make for cons too! Heck yes!

    ReplyDelete
  130. I dunno, I think the spongemonkeys were way creepier. Even if we did sing "We like the MOON!" for two years...

Oh, and everyone who loves chocolate should see this.

Before this one, my favorite Japanese music video was the Yatta song with the guys dancing around in their underwear with the fake fig leaves. I'm sure you've all seen that one, though . . .
