Portal Fan Video Fun

In the past two days I've seen two amazing Portal vids. That's enough to warrant a post, right? :D

First, a sketch performed at the Fanime 2011 Masquerade:

I would have loved to see this live. So fun!

Now, hold on to your socks, 'cuz this next video is going to knock. them. off.

Talk about the intersection of my two blogs: video games and cake? Yes, please!

I've already watched this four times, and it honestly gets better with every viewing. (Although I do wish the final cake was less perfect and more realistic - but that's just me nit-picking.) The actress, Nicole Leigh, is so, so good. I laugh at her oven reaction shots every time.

At some point now I really do need to find time to play Portal 2...but since my office and dining room are both currently covered in pieces of in-process construction projects (updates coming!), that's probably not going to be anytime soon. Heh.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have power tools calling my name.

(And they're saying, "Jeeeen! Tell John to put his saaaafety glasses back ooooonn!"

Hear that, Sweetie?
)

  1. I have never played Portal. However, I LOVE the final song (my husband is a science nerd, so someone passed it on to him, etc.) Today I had "Still Alive" in my head, found an elementary school choir singing it. IT WAS AWESOME.
Look at me still talking... tsk tsk.

  2. Well, to be fair, awesome in a disturbing way.

  4. I saw that first one on Facebook and had to re-post it!

The second one is just amazing, the actress is perfect as Chell :D

  5. These are absolutely amazing! Very impressive skit, and the short film is excellent. Thanks for sharing these! Makes having the flu a little easier, lol.

  6. OKAY OKAY FINE. I'll play it. But I have to finish Plants vs. Zombies first. I didn't realize it's a puzzle game.

So I guess it's a game available for all kinds of venues? I SUCK at the controllers for all of the new-fangled games. Whatever happened to up down left right B A start and select?

I liked how they thanked God in their video, for providing financing, salvation and physics. So cool.

  7. The cake is so delicious and moist! Also, Jen, you NEED to play Portal 2. You just need to. It was the awesomest most awesome awesome thing ever.

  8. That totally made my day. I love me some Portal, and for a while I was confused as to how they got to Portal 2 from the first one. Then I went to show a friend the end of the first on YouTube, and realized they had changed the ending to make it mesh. The cake she makes made me laugh, since it's the one GlaDOS keeps offering her.

  9. Portal fans UNITE! Love these videos, Outside Aperture was AMAZING. The skit was well done, too, and looked like lots of fun to watch!

Also, you're not being nit-picky, you're just saying the cake was a lie.

  10. Wow, random, I have never played Portal, and this is the second time I came across it in two days! The videos were lovely. The first time I heard of it was through checking out the songs of Jonathan Coulton; I found "Still Alive" and I think it's great even though I've never played the game. I'll have to check it out!

  11. I have Portal, I just don't understand what I am supposed to be doing. I am an instructions kind of girl.

  12. Jen, PLAY PORTAL 2! I just finished it and it's SO worth it. I'm now waffling between companion cube obsession and freaking out when my GPS startles me (she sounds like GLaDOS I swear). I think my boyfriend is regretting introducing me to the games, now that I don't shut up about the amazing companion cube pillow/ottoman I'm making :)

  13. The internet frustrates me sometimes, because I love Portal, but it got so done to death with all the companion cubes, cake is a lie, the still alive song everywhere. But those two videos were amazing, without just parroting the same overdone lines over and over. Even the cake reference was well done, not just "look! it's a lie!" Thanks for sharing!

  16. LOVE!!!! these are awesome! i haven't played portal 2 yet because i used up my 'extra' cash to preorder american mcgee's alice 2 instead. but once i get me some more money you can bet i'll be playing portal 2! the worst part about being unemployed is that you have plenty of free time to play video games, but no money to buy them *sigh*

  17. Went to EPCOT yesterday, and the Magic Kingdom the day before that. So far my favorites have been teacups, winnie the poo, Pirates of the Carribean, Spaceship Earth, and the one where you design your own ride.

  18. Every time I work without safety glasses I know that my dad, hundreds of miles away, is getting agitated, and he doesn't know why.

  19. Jen, if you need more Portal fan goodness then Youtube a song called "The Device Has Been Modified v2"...it will so wind up on your iPod. (granted it's older, but still good)

  20. Ok you guys- I know absolutely nothing about Portal, other than 1. It is a video game and 2. The cake is a lie.

Somebody clue me in as to what's happening? I mean, I get it, there are portals and cake- but explain the ending that this is based off of. Please? With several cherries on top? :)

  21. "Remember: there is no more important rule than to wear these (points to face) safety glasses."

Cuz geeks LOVE Norm Abrams! New Yankee Workshop FTW!!!

Tell John safety glasses are hot. And not getting wood shavings in your eye? Totes hotz!

  22. Ana V. this is the best explanation I can give you, provided Jen doesn't mind spoilers in her comment section.

You're a test subject named Chell. You go through lots of ridiculous tests posed to you by a computer named GLaDOS who promises you cake and grief counseling if you successfully complete all the tests. (you use your handheld portal gun to complete these tests) When you complete the final test you do NOT in fact get cake, hence it being a lie, and GLaDOS attempts to murder you. So you escape and destroy her instead. The end of the game finds you flung outside the Aperture Labs building where your fate is unknown. The fan video posted picks up on that premise and ignores the fact that in Portal 2 you were dragged back inside the facility where you once again wake up.

  23. My husband, 17 yr old son AND 7 year old daughter are currently playing Portal 2. I, though, can't figure it out. My brain doesn't work like that. I love watching them play though.

  24. My ex-husband got me to play it a couple years ago. I don't think I ever got that far into the game but I really liked it. There is no cake !
