Our Disney Scavenger Hunt

I'll spare you any suspense, and tell you we did *not* win the D23 Scavenger Hunt. However, we survived. And that, in itself, is a win.

Our Scavenger Hunt swag: lanyard tags, iron-on patches, and a canvas bag.

Imagine, if you will, having three hours to find approximately 150 hard-to-find things scattered throughout an entire theme park filled to the brim with slow-moving tourists and strollers and massive bottle-necked crowds, and also that it's about 100 degrees in the shade. Then imagine many of those hard-to-find things also involving tedious puzzle-solving and letter-counting, and that you have to do two parks back-to-back each day, with maybe 20 minutes in between for lunch and bathroom breaks.

Like I said: survival was its own reward.

The highest-point clues (which of course were the ones we wanted most to solve) involved multiple steps which had us all scrambling from one end of the park to the other. For example: "Find such-and-such plaque in Town Square and list the 67th, 108th, 21st, 51st, 49th, and 57th letters. Unscramble the letters to form a word. Now find an attraction with that word in it. Go to that attraction. Find a poster listing the date it was opened. Now find the shop in Liberty Square with an address matching the last two digits of that date. Write the name of that shop as your answer."

And that was just one.

There would be about 15 ten-point clues (per park) like that. Roughly another 15 were five-pointers, which had multiple steps but all in the same area. The remaining 6o or so were all one-pointers: ie "Find the buggy on a Main Street Window. List the name of that shop's proprietor."

To make it harder, all the questions were mixed together so nothing was arranged by location. This meant our first five to ten minutes was spend speed-reading and marking each clue by the guide map - although the ten-pointers always threw a wrench in the works by making us retrace our steps many times over.

In addition to the park crowds, we also had our fellow Hunters to contend with. With over 500 teams (comprised of two to four people each) in the running, almost every long-puzzle location had a crowd to jostle through - and since we were all counting letters and words on itty-bitty plaques and signs, and people would stick their hands and fingers in the way to count along...yeah. Tough.

Everyone keeps asking if it was fun or not. Umm....kind of? I guess we still haven't decided, although I'm pretty sure I'd do it again. There was a real thrill each time we found something - especially the four-and-five step clues, and you do reach a point when you couldn't *possibly* get any more drenched with sweat, and therefore you just stop worrying about it. Heh.

We tried to guzzle lots of water or Gatorade while zipping through the crowds, and we re-applied our 50+ baby-block sunscreen several times, but even so there was a time or two when I was sure I was going to faint. I pushed myself to my limit, and there was actually something really satisfying about that. Like going to battle. Only with more funny hats. And blisters.

It was also nice to have something that demanded our complete attention for almost the entire time that Blogger was down. We knew there was nothing we could do about our posts disappearing or the site being inaccessible, so at least this kept our minds off it.

There were ways it could have been better, of course - a cooler time of year, a less-crowded time of year, or if the organizers had made sure all the clues were actually *in* the parks. (At least one clue per park had the necessary item missing, broken, or shut down, resulting in lots of wasted time.) I also wish we could have had more interaction with our fellow hunters, since the few we did chat with on the trams or monorail seemed really fun. Quite a few came in from out of state for the hunt, and many had special team t-shirts made up or they dressed alike - one pair of ladies even wore matching pink tutus and tiaras both days.

A team t-shirt we spotted on the tram on Day 2. Isn't it awesome?
(The art is by one of the ladies' brothers, Joshua R. Stones.)

UPDATE: Aaaand the results are in! John and I made a not-too-embarrassing 146th out of the 520 teams competing. The top three winning teams were comprised of professional Disney bloggers, authors, and pod-casters, so the few online boards I've visited since are full of less-than-thrilled competitors. Still, it's hard to be believe that any Disney trivia nut - no matter how hardcore - would know, say, the exact dates when each shop on Main Street was founded, so I don't see how they'd have *that* much of an advantage over the rest of us.

While I don't begrudge any Dizgeek using his/her trivia knowledge to their advantage, it is a shame to learn how widespread the cheating was. Lots of teams split up, helped other teams, used extra people, or got cast members to help them. John and I saw some of this (teams peeking over our shoulders, or copying down answers we'd just blurted out - and one team was even sitting on the answer we were hunting, so it was only random luck that I thought to ask to see behind them) but frankly we were too absorbed in our own hunt to worry about anyone else.

We were very careful to follow the rules, though, as I never let John get more than a dozen feet away from me, and we refused help on more than one occasion from eager-to-please cast members (who really *should* have known better, heh). Still, it makes me wish the grand prize had been something small, so that the urge to cheat would be gone and we could've all just had fun. I think dangling a Disney cruise in front of people is just too much temptation.

So, now that you've slogged through my lengthy report, I'll reward you with a (potentially) fun idea: John and I think it'd be awesome to make our own Disney scavenger hunt. One that you guys could download and print out for family vacations, say, and that combines trivia with hunting so you learn neat little factoids about the attractions and whatnot while you go. I'm sure these probably already exist out there (the Hidden Mickeys books come to mind), but I love the idea of making our own. What do you think? Is that something any of you Dizgeeks would like? And then - and I know this is just CRAZY talk - maybe we could even arrange a timed hunt for any of you who wanted to come to Orlando. You'd compete for...uh...whatever I have in my pocket. Yeah. But...not in a dirty way. More like a Hobbit way. (Trip to Mordor optional.)

So...[hopeful grin]...thoughts?

  1. I would totally drive for two days with 4 kids to participate in any hunt you arranged! No awards necessary!

  2. Reminds me of the Minnie's Moonlit Madness Trivia hunts I got to participate in as a Disneyland Cast Member (in the dark, after park closing). So much fun and SO much walking and shuffling and jostling in so little time! (also we were roped together, four of us with about 8 feet of rope)

  3. I would love a scavenger hunt that I could do while we were on vacation. I love Disney trivia and learning things about the park or Disney that unless you were looking, you would just pass by. On our last trip our daughter was 2 so we mostly just made sure neither she nor we had a meltdown. Next trip will be loads better.

  4. I'd love a hunt like that! We (unfortunately) don't have any plans to get to the parks anytime soon :-( but WILL go again (I'd go every year, but it is a bit tough from New England), and my daughter will most likely be a teenager, so it will be a whole different experience. We did some Hidden Mickey stuff the last time we were there, and she thought it was fun then.
Glad you had fun, in spite of the cheaters. It really is too bad that some people can't play fair. This is DISNEY people, c'mon!

  5. This sounds like sooo much fun!!! I would LOVE for you to create a hunt!! & i'd totally be up for a timed hunt... i think hubby has finally agreed to getting passes after summer!! :)

  6. I would love a downloadable trivia hunt! We're probably going back to WDW in February and I'm sure my son would enjoy it. We went once in August, and that was enough to convince me never to go again in hot and unbearably humid weather months. It is October to March only for me. I have no idea how you live there year round!

  7. That would be SO MUCH fun! I don't know about a timed hunt, that might be hard to arrange, but many times before a trip to Disneyland or Disneyworld I'd try to find cool trivia things and never really found anything. My most memorable Disneyland trip was when a cast member gave me and my husband a personal tour of things because it was our honeymoon (we got hats!).

  8. I think it is a brilliant idea! We are hoping to get to Disneyworld this year. My 10 year old son has never been and as a Disneyworld frequenter in my youth, I cannot beleive this. His father hates Disneyworld. Yes, he is a doo-doo head. So it's going to be a mother-son trip and scavenger hunt would be AWESOME!!!!

  9. I would love to go on a Disney scavenger hunt! I've never been and it sounds like that would be a fun way to see things you wouldn't normally take in.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I love reading your blog and that sounds like a lovely idea! I like the timed event, but also have it available to those who couldn't make it and can do it on their own time.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Do it! DOOO IT! My family is going to WDW in January and I would *love* to be able to download and take along something like that.

  12. would love a fun scavenger hunt. Great idea!

  13. Sounds like a lot of fun!! I would LOVE a Jen-made disney scavenger hunt! (Though the chances of me getting to disney anytime soon are *very* low)

  14. You can also do personalized scavenger hunts in the parks through GiftsofaLifetime.com - they do an Amazing Race event in Epcot that's pretty awesome. :)

    ReplyDelete
  15. We check in on June 12th. Will it be ready by then? No pressure ;)

    ReplyDelete
  16. Some of us are only a few hours away and could ~probably do a timed thing with some advance notice. Our biggest dizgeek friends are from St. Louis though and can only get down when their little ones get a break from school (as long as they haven't had a wedding to attend or other fiscal surprise). -- If more schools are doing that two weeks between Christmas and New Year, that might be a nicely cool possibility.

(My word verification is brothors. You don't know how hard it is to type in without changing it. )

  17. I would LOVE LOVE LOVE a Disney Hunt! I passed on the official hunt for the very reasons you mentioned, but an "unofficial" would be fantastic!

    ReplyDelete
  18. I'd LOVE to go on a scavenger hunt that you created!

    ReplyDelete
  19. I would LOVE to have a scavenger hunt to work on while at Disney. My family's considering a trip in the near future and I think it would be awesome to have trivia and stuff to look for while we're there!

    ReplyDelete
  20. I actually live in Florida (in Gainesville, which is less than 2 hours from Orlando) and I haven't been to Disney in the 3 years we've lived here. This would probably compel me to go and drag my husband - something extra fun for us to do at the park, especially since we've both only been to it once, when we were in the 8th grade. I would absolutely love to do this, no reward necessary but for the fun of doing it :) And if we happened to run into the fabulous duo of Jen and John, I would be flattered and terribly excited ;)

  21. We're coming in November and bringing 170 of our closest friends (i.e. the Marching Band) with us! For some kids it's their first time to go to Disney, for others it's their 15th time. A downloadable scavenger hunt would be way fun for all!

    ReplyDelete
  22. I would LOVE that! It would be so much fun! The hubby and I are trying to plan a trip to Disney this winter, so even if we couldn't make it to one your organized, having a scavenger hunt we could download and do on our own would be amazing!

    ReplyDelete
  23. How cool would that be! Probably even more fun than the official one since we could do it at a cooler, less crowded time of year. I am smelling a book here!
I would love to help out too - I'm a major Disney fan located in Jax.
The clues could be grouped by location to avoid that needless travel back and forth and there could be a solution section, with pictures! One of my chief gripes about the Hidden Mickey book is that there are no pictures.

    ReplyDelete
  24. That would be tons of fun! Though, is there a possibility that you could do one for a hunt you could do at Disney World or Disneyland?

    ReplyDelete
  25. I would love that! I was a cast member for almost a year (I did the college program) and I know I still didn't see everything. Maybe you could have different levels for the hard-core Disney fans and the casual vacationers. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  26. Oh yea!!! Does anyone know of a hunt for Disneyland Cali!!! That would be sooo much fun!!!

    ReplyDelete
  27. That would be AWESOME!!!!
The hubby & I will be coming to DW (for the first time ever!) in June.

Glad you had a (mostly) good time. Sorry about all the cheaters... but, yeah, a cruise will bring 'em out.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I would totally buy a scavenger hunt book written by you and john! We won't be at DWorld for another 3.5 years but we love the Dland hidden Mickey book and we <3 Epbot, so a combo of the two would be awesome!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Oh yes please!

You should know I am posting this from Epcot!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Uh. YEAH. I would LOVE that. I'm such a puzzler/scavanger hunt fan anyway, and we are hitting Disney again after the first of the year. I'd have a blast hunting things down and figuring things out. And I would definitely *try* to talk my hubster into a little (ok...pretty big) trip that way to participate in a timed hunt...the One Ring or no.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Yes, please, yes, please, yes, please!! An Epbot-derived Disney scavenger hunt would be AWESOME!! I'd totally do that on my next Disney trip. Pinky swear.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I'd like a Disneyland (CA) quiz. I hope to go there soon, hopefully 2012 or 2013 and since I have no one to go with a quiz would give me an excuse to explore the site without feeling too out of place!

    ReplyDelete
  33. I'd love to see a scavenger hunt you create! I scoured the web to find one for the mid-afternoon bachelorette party for a friend who doesn't really drink. We ended up making clues that took us around the magic kingdom resorts instead.

I agree with you on this hunt... they need to host it in January! And maybe have you ride some rides in parks other than epcot (the badges could be fastpasses?) All in all, it was fun enough that I would play again though, even though I was completely exhausted at the end! We only made it to three parks because we were in a wedding at 10am Thursday at the wedding pavilion!

    ReplyDelete
  34. next time you do something crazy like this, you should get a camelback to wear for hydration without splashing it all over your face while you are running through the park. You could decorate it with disney patches and pins and I am sure there would be some jealous Dizgeeks!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I think that would be fun, less chaotic and hopefully less sweaty.

I'd donate a couple of my sewn grocery bags made specially for this in a Disney related fabric in addition to whatever is in your pocket for a prize.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I'd love that! Would you make one for Disneyland, too? Please!?!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Oooh, a scavenger hunt would be awesome! :D Make it make it make it!

Word verification: thizzede. As in, Thizzede gal wanna scavenger hunt, um, yo!

    ReplyDelete
  38. That would be SO COOL! I would love to have a personal scavenger hunt to play with!

    ReplyDelete
  39. I would love to add a scavenger hunt to my vacations. I started getting into geocaching to accompany my hiking vacations. There are a few virtual caches in the Disney Parks.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I would love a hunt we could print and take! Please, pretty please?

    ReplyDelete
  41. Oh my goodness, that would be SO MUCH FUN! I am moving to Jacksonville in the next couple of months and I would totally drive down to do that!

    ReplyDelete
  42. I think the trivia for people on vacation is a neat idea. I would like to see one that is ride specific. What I mean by that is finding the little things hidden in the rides through out the park so the now famous Mr. Toad handing Owl the deed to the land, the stitch in Its a Small World etc. It could even be as hard as less known characters by names like the pirates in Pirates of the Caribbean or the woodland animals in Splash Mountain.

I also think a picture hunt would be awesome. We did these through museums in my art class. The "shots" can only be things that are apart of the theme park so no trash or "set up" shots but it would be something like a rabbit, a log, and water so that would be a shot of the rabbit, the car, and the water in splash mountain. Those get real hard but are great to do if someone took the time to look around the park and find interesting pictures to take.

  43. I am getting married in October and we're going to Disney World for our honeymoon an a scavenger hunt would be awesome!!

    ReplyDelete
  44. I think a hunt like that would be awesome! I don't think I'd like the pressure of a timed hunt, but one that I could do sort of casually as we're walking around the park would be fun!

    ReplyDelete
  45. I've only been to Disney twice. I think this is more for the folks who've been A LOT. Or maybe not. But I'd just want to go and enjoy the park...

    ReplyDelete
  46. Can it be a kid-friendly scavenger hunt? Because I'd be alllll over that.

    Can Star Wars Katie come?

    ReplyDelete
  47. WOW, that's an INSANE scavenger hunt. I mean, honestly, with the kind of work it sounds like you put in, I would think a Disney cruise PLUS 1 year of free admission to any park PLUS discounted VIP passes and food would be worth it. I'm not that much of a Disney geek to even be able to begin to do that kind of a hunt. But if it were, say, an X-Files scavenger hunt I probably wouldn't do it either--thta's too complex.

I think your idea for a simpler scavenger hunt that people can download is great! I know I would love to learn some of the back story and secrets of the Disney theme parks. Maybe give out a free book or a gift certificate as a prize? And make it for both parks since some of us live on the OTHER side of the U.S. and can't get to DW?

Another idea: what about an Internet scavenger hunt for those who can't make it to either park? We could all pay a fee (like $20) which could go towards prizes. And you could do like we do in the horse world: give out a rabbit prize for the fastest to complete the hunt and a turtle prize for the slowest! Oh man, the ideas are just swimming in my head right now!

My friend and I once put together a musical cars scavenger hunt for her birthday. We had four teams, which mean four drivers who knew the spots. (Me, my friend, her older sister and her dad.) We picked places around town and hid the next clue at that place somewhere where it was easy for us to find but hard for someone who wasn't involved to swipe. Each team had its own color, so they would pick up their corresponding envelope with the new clue. The written clues corresponded to a song we played on a cassette tape in the vehicle. The clues and songs were mixed up from car to car so we weren't all driving to the same place. It was a fabulous time. We had prizes for who got home first and who got home last, but I can't remember what other prizes we had.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I think that is a lovely idea, and a generous one, as well. Not that I will be going there again or anything. Just for the record, I am jealous of anyone who lives in Florida. One of my fave places in the world :)

    ReplyDelete
  49. Have you ever tried letterboxing? You might like it with all this talk of scavenger hunts :)

    ReplyDelete
  50. I'd love to have a scavenger hunt to take on a family trip! Please do make one, it would be awesome to learn from a Disney expert. And, if I wasn't in Seattle, I'd totally do the timed hunt too :)

    ReplyDelete
  51. Sadly, given what I know of the online Disney fan community, rampant cheating doesn't surprise me in the slightest. BUT I'm glad you and John had a good time regardless! :)

    ReplyDelete
  52. Timed hunt would be great, especially if there were a party/meetup afterward. I don't know if I'd be able to make it from the west coast but it's still a great idea!

    ReplyDelete
  53. Awesome!! I'm so glad that you had fun, cuz that's really what it's all about, right?

    ReplyDelete
  54. I would totally want your treasure hunt. My fiancee and I are going to Disney on our Honeymoon and that would be so cool.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Oh my gosh, I'd love it you would have a hunt! I'd have to somehow convince my family to go, but I'd still love it! Just one thing: Please not it 110 degree weather. Please.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I love the idea of a scavenger hunt you can complete at Disney - it would add something new to people like me who have been there a gazillion times. However, with the price of Disney tickets these days I can't see buying park-hopper tickets JUST to do a scavenger hunt...

    ReplyDelete
  57. Have you ever thought (or seen anything about) MouseAdventure? I've been doing it with my parents and my husband for going on 4 years now, and we love it! Usually they're in Disneyland, but they've been doing a WDW version every fall (we're going to be doing the Studios this November). Check out www.mouseadventure.com for more info.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I would totally drive across the country to do a hunt with Jen and John. That would rock! We have had Disneyland passes since we got married, but I've never been to Florida so it'd be great to have a reason to finally go!

    ReplyDelete
  59. Jen, we would BE THERE! All the way from New Zealand, oh yes we would! Smallest is nearly 3 now, so we're over the "coping with little melty persons" stage, and I would love a wonderful idea like this to crack open the bank accounts. Please please please?

wv: nomibe - we would be there, nomibe's about it!

  60. That would be awesome! I can't wait to be able to take my son to Disney so a scavenger hunt to do there would be a bonus. :D

    ReplyDelete
  61. That sounds great! The scavenger hunt is my favorite part of the Expedition Everest Challenge (well, besides the after party). We would definitely come to Orlando for that!

    ReplyDelete
  62. GREAT idea!! We go to WDW every year and this would be something my teen aged sons (and my tween)would enjoy - mix it up, keep it fresh. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  63. I would love something like that. I'm disappointed that Disney didn't think through the logistics of the hunt more thoroughly. But you have a great feel on the spirit of the park and why people go there, so I think it would be amazing! Plus I haven't been to DW since I was 12, and I'm 28 now. I'm in MD so it's out of the way.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I was a cast member about seven years ago. How long has this scavenger hunt been going on? I ask because I never heard of it, and I would have been one of the overly-willing-to-help cast members who wouldn't know any better. :P I usually had no idea what events were going on in the park just because we were never told.

I would love to do a scavenger hunt, but I think having one to download would be best since who knows when people could be in Orlando.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I would so love to do this! I really wish I didn't live on the other side of the world right now - I'm hoping I will get to Disneyland one day...when my son was about five I said to him how I had always wanted to go to Disneyland and he said,(very condescendingly),"Mummy, just because you saw it on television doesn't mean it's a real place!"

    ReplyDelete
  66. I'd enjoy one that was available whenever we happened to make it there. I don't think we'd be able to make a particular time, though.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Um, Jen. I happen to have a going-way-back obsession with coming to Disney World someday and now that I'm in the having-kids part of my life I'm eagerly anticipating the day I actually get to take them.

I think it's an awesome idea to post your own--I would totally do it when I go!

    ReplyDelete
  68. I think you guys would come up with an awesome scavenger hunt! I was just down there in September, but I'm hoping to go back sometime this year to visit my Cast Member friend. I would love to try a scavenger hunt on my next trip!

    ReplyDelete
  69. Every time we drive the 17 + hours (in one day) it takes to get to your part of Florida we vow never again. Not never come to Florida. Just never make the trip in one day. When it gets down to it, though, we just want to get there so we drive straight through. i would TOTALLY do that again for an EPBOT scavenger hunt

    ReplyDelete
  70. I would LOVE a trivia hunt! Could you do it for WORLD "or" LAND so that those of us who are closer to SoCal could do it there?? And yes, I think I could get my husband to go to FL for a timed one! Fun stuff!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  71. I'm with everyone here. My family would absolutely love to do a trivia hunt at Disney. We talked about possibly doing the Disney Scavenger Hunt but we couldn't arrange everything so fast. After reading your report though I'm glad we didn't. I'm sure it could have been great but I don't like cheaters that break rules :D Thanks for the report and more power to you if you make a scavenger hunt, this Diz household will definately do it :D

    ReplyDelete
  72. I think a Jen & John hunt would be Great! Err, that is, a hunt *arranged* by you, not *for* you. (But that could be fun too ;) ) You could have thematic hunts! Is it possible to create a steampunk flavor scavenger hunt at Disney? You could do it, if anyone can!

    ReplyDelete
  73. Of COURSE we'd love that! I've been to Disney so many times that I'm (dare I say it) bored sometimes. This would make it awesome! But I'm much too lazy to make it myself...I'm sure you have TONS more time.

    ReplyDelete
  74. I would love a scavenger hunt! I've been throwing ideas around about a scavenger hunt for my sons when we're in WDW this July. They are Disney nuts almost as much as I am, but they are 4 and 6 so I win at all Disney games. I let them win other, non-Disney games, don't worry. This would be a fun idea for them, especially in the restaurants while waiting for food or in lines.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Love the idea! I don't know when/if I'll be there again, but I definitely would go with something like that from someone I *know*, then a total stranger. :) Maybe you could team up with the 'Unoffical Guide' people (who saved my life on my first DW trip!) to make it some sort of chargeable download for non Epbot-fans so that you'd get some reward for your work.

    ReplyDelete
  76. That sounds like a blast! We're going to WDW in September (gotta love off-season and only being three hours away). The kids would have fun trying to figure out clues. They did the "Kim Possible" hunt in Epcot last time we went, and that was pretty cute.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I'd love a downloadable scavenger hunt! It's all about the trivial details that make WDW so magical, and a quiz that called those things to attention would be so much fun!

-Caitlin from Texas (soon to be Florida!)

    ReplyDelete
  78. I would so do a Jen & John-made Disney Scavenger Hunt!
It doesn't take much for me to make up my husband's mind that we need another Disney trip, he's always teetering on the edge anyhow (am I a lucky girl or what?).
We have a hard time leaving our kids behind when we go (and we haven't as of yet) so a more laid back hunt like you're talking about is definitely our style, as opposed to the craziness you endured!

    ReplyDelete
  79. A scavenger hunt sounds like lots of fun! Savenger hunts from books have been done over and over again and you can find some answers online (not that I'd cheat: where's the fun in that?), so a new and fresh hunt put together by a Dizgeek like you would be a blast. And a TIMED hunt hosted by you and John? *will refrain from swooning*

Hey, does that mean we can all stay at your house? I promise not to touch anything. :D

    ReplyDelete
  80. That's a great idea! My hubby, son and I are hard-core Disney Geeks and we'd love love love a downloadable scavenger hunt. Oh and by the way, we just got back from 5 days at Disneyland -- 14 hour drive each way -- and are already talking about when we can go back!

    ReplyDelete
  81. Yes, yes, yes!! We would like to come for an EPBOT hunt. Or, printing it off and doing it ourselves would be fun. We love Disney (honeymooned there, hubby played in the college band during one summer) and always are looking for a reason to go! We are in Middle GA, so don't have that far to go.

P.S. My hubby was wondering what the answer was to the first clue you posted? Was it the Christmas shop?

    ReplyDelete
  82. I think going on a Jen Yates Disney scavenger Hunt would be a LOT of fun! And I'm not even a super Dizgeek. I mean I like Disney movies, and the parks, and would love to take my kids to the parks and a cruise someday, but I'm not nearly the fan that you are. But I am a fan of you, Jen, so I would love to do your scavenger hunt. Someday. When my kids are older (the are 4.5 and 2.5 right now). But I'm sure my kids would be just as content to find the hidden Mickey's. :)

  83. I would love, love, love a timed hunt. I would fly from Alberta in an instant to participate!

    ReplyDelete
  84. My husband is a high school calculus and physics teacher and every year he takes his kids to Disney to study the physics of roller coasters. He would love a scavenger hunt for them to do while they are there! Please, please, please post one!

    ReplyDelete
  85. That sounds awesome! Please make a scavenger hunt! Oh! And can you make one for those of us on the left coast - Disneyland is significantly closer than Disney World for me. Thanks and I love the blog!

    ReplyDelete
  86. I am completely for a Jen-made scavenger hunt. I grew up in FL, and am greatly looking forward to taking my husband to all the Orlando parks when we go down (from our home in PA) this November for a friends wedding. Having a fun hunt to do while there would be icing on our already tasty cake.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Wow, that does sound like fun! Don't know if I'd like the rushing around in the heat part, but a scavenger hunt through the parks seems like it'd be SO awesome, and time well spent. Too bad about the cheaters, though. Boo.

    ReplyDelete
  88. We're planning a Disney trip for next year so an Epbot Disney hunt would be awesome!

    ReplyDelete
  89. Though my wife and I are now getting on a bit and live in London (UK, not Canada), we'd love to see a hunt online that we could take part in next time we visit my wife's relatives in LA. Count us in!

    ReplyDelete
  90. I would love to do a Disney scavenger hunt...whether or not I could get to Orlando any time besides our once a year vacation...is a different matter, but I can dream!

    ReplyDelete
  91. I would absolutely love this! Me and the boyfriend are heading down to to Disney for the third year in July and a scavenger hunt sounds like something right up our alley!

    ReplyDelete
  92. Jen... I would 100% Love to partake in a Disney Scavenger Hunt of your design!

    ReplyDelete
  93. That would be so awesome!!! We're planning a cruise/WDW sometime next year, hope to make it.

    ReplyDelete
  94. I'm going to be taking my honeymoon in September at Disneyworld, so I'd LOVE a scavenger hunt for my and my new hubby to get to know Disney with! He's never been, and that would be just an awesome chance for him to explore with me!! Newlywed team building FTW!!! :)

    ReplyDelete
  95. Jen, I'd love a hunt organized by y'all! We aren't going for a while yet but that will just give you time to get the bugs worked out. :D

It would be interesting if there was a way to have a photo / creative element to it - instead of all the answers being written, have some of the answers be more the competitor's choice with chances for creativity / diversity of answers, photos to be submitted electronically - or even via Photopass.

    ReplyDelete
  96. I think a downloadable trivia hunt would be great. I know we had lots of fun finding the hidden miickeys. It's feels like you've been let in on a secret.

    ReplyDelete
  97. I would also love a scavenger hunt to do on vacation. I don't need it timed or anything, just get me to learn something neat in each major area. Maybe a page that's good if you're with kids and a page if it's just the adults, because there are things I find interesting now that I could not have cared less about when I was nine.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Do you really have to ask? A hunt we could complete on our own time would be awesome! I think I'd skip the stress of a timed run around the park(s). It would also be great if there were several smaller lists, separated by park.

I think its a really awesome idea!!! especially if it was something catered to everybody or that you could give more rules/what-have-you for die-hards!

    ReplyDelete
  100. We're all the way from Indiana and I think a scavenger hunt would get my husband that much more into a Disney trip. We're hoping to go October of 2012, when our oldest is 3 and the currently baking one is a year old, kind of put it between both of their birthdays. We plan to take my mom, too, which would make the trip that much more fun for her. She watches for different types of cars while we're on the road, so I know she would love it!

    ReplyDelete
  101. I love this idea! Nothing really hard though please. If possible clues that a child would enjoy looking for as well. I've only been to the parks once before and we are going again next April with our little guy in tow.

I think you would do an amazing job creating a hunt. DO IT! DO IT! :)

    ReplyDelete
  102. Do it, please! I would try my best to come all the way from central Illinois if you did! Also, I like the idea of just making it available online for us to use at our own convenience. Scavenger hunts are the best!

    ReplyDelete
  103. I think it would be awesome if y'all made a scavenger hunt. I would SO do it!

Plus I'm in the parks all the time so if you want someone to test it out for you before it goes public I'd totally volunteer

    ReplyDelete
  104. I love the idea of a hunt. I think it would be so much fun to do with our kids to make the trip even more memorable.

So sad to hear that so many other teams on the hunt cheated. That really takes the fun out of it.

    ReplyDelete
  105. you gotta find someone to do a Disneyland version too, we live closer to the other coast.

Although I do have to properly educate my child and take her to WDW...
My hubby grew up in CA and has never been to WDW. I grew up in FL and hadn't been to DL until 2004.

    ReplyDelete
  106. That would be SUCH fun!! We'd love it.

    ReplyDelete
  107. I concur. I would totally arrange a Disney trip around your scavenger hunt, Jen.

    ReplyDelete
  108. PLEASE do it! I love scavenger hunts, and Disney, but the one you attended sounds almost slightly terrible. :P I think yours would be fun!

    ReplyDelete
  109. In this same vein, anyone in the Southern California area: MouseAdventure (put on by MousePlanet) is an awesome trivia/quest challenge at Disneyland twice a year. Hilariously challenging and fun, I highly recommend it :-)

    ReplyDelete
  110. I WOULD TOTALLY BE UP FOR THAT!!! I'll be visiting family in the Orlando area for Thanksgiving and plan on going to a Disney park, and to Universal for sure to see Harry Potter Land (if you could make a scavenger hunt for that one too that would be AWESOME!!).
    Thanks for your ideas, Jen!!

    ReplyDelete
  111. I live in Australia and as such have never been to America let alone Disney Land. When we go on holiday it's normally to an Asian country such as Indonesia, Malaysia or Thailand... Plus, I hear Disney Land is REALLY expensive :/

One day though, one day :D

    ReplyDelete
  112. You should do one for us west coasters too!! We don't want to miss out on the fun!

    ReplyDelete
  113. First time commenting, usually I just lurk. But my boyfriend and I are big Disney fans. We live in Miami and drive up about one a month. And we think a scavenger hunt would be brilliant.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Sounds wonderful. But how about an online hunt? You would be the perfect person to send your minions looking for treasures in the geek-y-verse...

    ReplyDelete
  115. That sounds like an AWESOME idea! The only hitch in the plan is that I don't live anywhere near Florida, have never been to Disneyworld, and probably couldn't afford a vacation.
    :(
    Sounds like fun, though.

    ReplyDelete
  116. I live right around the corner from Disney, and would LOVE to do do something like that! I wish I'd known about this one, too, where did you find out about it? (not as big a Disney nerd as I used to be, I should work on that...)

    ReplyDelete
  117. I'd be up for it!

    ReplyDelete
  118. I think it would be great to have a print-out-able scavenger hunt for Disney. I've been bugging my extended family to plan another Disney trip for a while now...maybe next year. And having something to help pass the time while standing in lines or waiting for parades would be great. Last time we went I had the Imagineers Guide to the Magic Kingdom with me. I really enjoyed reading that and (I think) my family enjoyed the little bits of trivia and history I shared with them at times.

    ReplyDelete
  119. Sounds like fun! I would be more than happy to be a test dummy for it. =)

    ReplyDelete
  120. LOVE the EPBOT version of the Diz scavenger hunt! Growing up in FL, we were always looking for something different to do at Disney. Living out of state, this would be a great way to enjoy the parks on our summer pilgrimage next year!

    ReplyDelete
  121. I agree with everyone else: I'd love a scavenger hunt! I wouldn't be able to make it for a timed one, since I live in the UK. But my husband and I should be heading over for a week of Disney World somewhere in the next 2 years and we'd love to have an excuse to do some extra exploring!

    ReplyDelete
  122. If you had one per park, then I'd totally print it out just to take with me when I went to that park for the day. I like having extra stuff to do, since I've been to the parks so many times. It's fun to see the hidden things that only dizgeeks know about.

    ReplyDelete
  123. I live in Jacksonville- only about 2 hrs from Disney give or take. We go at least 1-2 times per month so I would LOVE if y'all made a printable scavenger hunt!!!
BTW love both or ur blogs- read 'em every day.

    ReplyDelete
  124. I'd be all for a Jen and John created Disney scavenger hunt if the following requirements were met:

    1. It's held during a less popular time of year to visit Disney. And when the weather isn't oppressively hot.
    2. The rules included that you had to be nice and fair to other competitors, and no cheating.
    3. That there be some sort of group photo with you, John, and all the teams.
    4. That a best team t-shirt contest was held. The Prize? A hug and a photo :)

I'd come all the way from Pennsylvania to participate in that!

    ReplyDelete
  125. If you guys made a Disney Scavenger hunt, I would totally come down! An excuse to go to Disney again and meet fellow Epbot readers?? Yes, please!!!

    ReplyDelete
  126. Wow, my family should really play the next one of these. We would destroy it. My sisters and I are not only Disney obsessed and have each been going since we were babies, but we are also logic puzzle solving masters with an extreme competitive streak.

Also, we would love to help you make a similar scavenger hunt. We did create Disney Bingo, and we are always looking for new things to do with Disney! You can always email me and we could work on it!

    Rosalind

    ReplyDelete
  127. A scavenger hunt sounds really cool, especially one that could be done whenever. I won't be going to Disney for a while, but my Dad and my almost stepsisters will be in the next couple of years, and I know he'd love something that'd help keep them occupied.

    ReplyDelete
  128. YES!!!! YES, yes, yes, yes! I've run out of things to hunt in the parks. Pressed pennies, check. Hidden Mickey's, check. Various games I've made up for myself, check.

    ReplyDelete
  129. I would totally do a scavenger hunt! I love sharing my useless Disney Trivia knowledge everytime I go to the park.

    ReplyDelete
  130. This sounds like a blast - kinda like the Kim Possible mission, but MK would be so much more fun.

I haven't been through all the comments, but if anyone watches "Community" & has seen last season's & this season's paintball episodes, maybe just a nice Disneypark dinner GC or Disney GC would be more appropriate & less of a temptation for "unsavory behaviors".

    ReplyDelete
  131. As a Cast Member I am embarrassed to say I don't know enough Disney trivia haha So something like that would be kind of awesome :)

    ReplyDelete
  132. We're going to D-World in June and would love to do a scavenger hunt with the kids. So get on that would ya!! ;0)

    ReplyDelete
  133. 1. I would absolutely participate in any hunt you planned!

    2. My sister and I did the D23 hunt as well. You sum up the event perfectly -- the heat, the crowds, the hordes of other teams (who did seem cool), the backtracking for multi-step clues, the suspected cheating...and yet, we'd still do it again in a heartbeat!

    ReplyDelete
  134. I'd love a downloadable Disney scavenger hunt to do with my kids (or just me) while playing at my favorite theme park! I love Disney and learning all sorts of fun tidbits, and as a fellow Disney lover, you seek out and share some great secrets. As long as the clues are either compatible with both Disneyland (where I spend most trips) and Disney World, or specified which park to hunt in. (You can make one for each!) I had no idea these scavenger hunts were around. They sound like great fun. And I agree—games are so much more fun and rewarding when you don't cheat.

Looking forward to your scavenger hunt! (Because now you know you have to make one for us fellow geeks, since you suggested it.)

    ReplyDelete
  135. That would be AWESOME!! Dylan and I would love to do a Jen&Jon specific Disney hunt.

    ReplyDelete
  136. We are DVC members and get to WDW every few months. My family would have a blast with a scavenger hunt!!!

And I completely forgot about D23 this past weekend. We considered a last minute trip and could not find a DVC studio available. Oops.

    ReplyDelete
  137. I would love that!!! I wish it was for Disneyland, though. It takes 18 hours to drive to Disneyland. It's a cross-country trip for us to Disneyworld!!

    ReplyDelete
  138. honestly I think that's a bloody brilliant idea! Is there a way to make one up for the California parks seeing as there's no way I'll ever be able to afford traveling to Florida on my meager budget?

    ReplyDelete
  139. A Disney scavenger hunt would be awesome! I would so love to be there at WDW, but it is across the country. :( So, like many others have suggested, a Disneyland scavenger hunt would be totally awesome! It's only like 5-6 hours away for me!

    ReplyDelete
  140. Yes yes please do this! I am coming to Orlando in June and would love to do this.

    ReplyDelete
  141. An Epbot hunt would be awesome! That would save me the trouble of driving myself absolutely batty trying to plan out the most efficient route around the parks to hit the best attractions at the least crowded times, while catching all the interesting shows as well. (Seriously, me in a theme park involves flow charts and calculus...) I know if I were following a Jen plan, we'd be seeing all the hidden treasures of Disney, plus hitting the high points, plus it would probably take us on a pretty efficient route (hint, hint) around the park! As I've told you before, I would pay you to be our tour guide at Disney, and this would be the next best thing (no Jen, but yay games!).

    ReplyDelete
  142. One that you guys could download and print out for family vacations, say, and that combines trivia with hunting so you learn neat little factoids about the attractions and whatnot while you go.

I think that is an AWESOME idea! I love stuff like that and even if I never make it to Disney myself, it's something I would definitely pass along to friends planning to visit.

Plus I have one good friend who loves Disney almost as much as you. Heck, y'all probably know one another. And I know she'd love something like that too.

    ReplyDelete
  143. Oh I would SO love that. Do you want a Disneyland compadre to make a corresponding Anaheim one? Because I'd be all over that! I have a functioning pass and a love of Disney trivia. Just throwing it out there! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  144. That'd be awesome! My family's planning a trip for next year, and I think a scavenger hunt from you guys would be a great - UNIQUE! - addition!

    ReplyDelete
  145. I would LOVE to do a Scavenger Hunt. My fiance and I are going to Disney World for our honeymoon next summer (July 2012) and this would be something totally fun to do while at the parks.

    ReplyDelete
  146. Jeff and I have been seriously discussing moving from Washington to Florida. If I lived there I would have a resounding huzzah for the hunt.

He's already looking at good neighborhoods and schools in the Orlando area. I wonder if we actually will...

Anyway, boo on the cheaters and yay for the honest players.

    ReplyDelete
  147. I'm in! The best prize would be if you showed up for dinner at the park with us!:-)

    ReplyDelete
  148. I would definitely use something like that one a Disney trip. Especially if there were puzzles involved. Maybe you could make ones of different toughness. Like an easier one for non-Dizgeeks like me and a harder one for you hardcore folks.

    ReplyDelete
  149. Jen! Please do this!!!

    ReplyDelete
  150. Sounds like fun! I just got back from participating in MiceChat.com's Gumball Rally, which was Disney insanity of a different sort. (Gumball Rally is a race to see which team can ride the most attractions - as a team - in the shortest amount of time. We had 12 hours to do 55 attractions in Disneyland and DCA. (I think we got 37.) It was a blast.)

    ReplyDelete
  151. Would LOVE a Disney scavenger hunt!! I'm going down for a friend's wedding Memorial Day and then we are waiting until Fantasyland is done. Also, I just saw on the Disney blog today that they are changing the Tiki Room. Yay!

    ReplyDelete
  152. So fun! I'm totally in. We live here and have annual passes, so we go all the time. Even if we couldn't do a full-on hunt with little ones in tow, we would totally like to hunt for things each time we visit.

But it would be really cool to meet up with you sometime, since, you know, we probably only live about 10 minutes from each other. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  153. OMG! If you do any type of Disney scavenger hunt (even if only a downloadable thing we could do on our vacation) that would be so AWESOME! (I keep using that word...)

If you could do something in time for Christmas this year, that'd be great! No pressure or anything! Just that will be the next time I'll be in Orlando, is all.

(Just kidding! But still, I'm all in for that stuff!)

    ReplyDelete
  154. Hehe, you should just have your own convention XD

    EpCon- epic fun!

If you've got one up by October I might have to drag my sister there to celebrate her wedding, I'm sure she'd enjoy it!

    ReplyDelete
  155. That sounds amazing Jen! I'd definitely bring it with me the next time I went to Orlando.

    ReplyDelete
  156. A scavenger hunt that you can do whenever you want sounds a lot more fun than the one you did. The point is to have fun and be apart from the other teams, I would think. I probably would have given up halfway through if I had to fight with sweaty crowds of cheaters.

I don't go to Disney often, but it would be a fun thing to have with me if I do go again, since I went to Disney so much in that year my family had the year-passes, there's not much else about the place that surprises me anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  157. I would absolutely love a scavenger hunt! I'll actually be doing the marathon in January and my nieces would love to do a hunt on the days before the run!

Have you been to Disneyland often enough to do one there, too? Seeing my family lives off that direction, we go to DL more often than WDW. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  158. *ridiculously high pitched squeal* Ooh, ooh, I want to do it! Plus I'm in Tampa so Disney is only about an hour from my house!

    ReplyDelete
  159. I'd have to say yes, I would be interested. More interested if I lived closer to the East coast so I could actually compete. I would love it! I bet I could even get my sister on board if it was during a break from school.

It sounds like a great idea!

    WV: dingship. Yes, seriously, dingship.

    ReplyDelete
  160. That sounds so awesome. I would be up for any kind of scavenger hunt. Some how I didn't even know that Disney had an official scavenger hunt or I would have been right there with you and complaining about the cheaters. Please do work on something I would totally love it and be there with a bunch of people too. Thanks :)

    ReplyDelete
  161. That sounds like an amazing idea. I love scavenger hunts that point out interesting details (which Disney seems to have a lot of).

    ReplyDelete
  162. We would LOVE that! My kids (who read both your blogs) would go librarian-poo crazy for that!

    ReplyDelete
  163. That would be AWESOME!! I'm actually going to Disneyworld (and Floriday) for the VERY FIRST TIME next month!!! *cue excited squeal*

My work is having a convention in Jacksonville, so afterwards, I'm taking a few days off and going to Orlando. As far as I know, I don't have anyone going with me, so a scavenger hunt would be great, so I'm not just wandering aimlessly alone. :) I'd be wandering alone with PURPOSE.

    ReplyDelete
  164. Please please please make one! Hubby and I would love that :) (OK mainly me, but I'm sure he'd get into it!)

    ReplyDelete
  165. I think that's an AWESOME IDEA!!!

    ReplyDelete
  166. Ummm...we would DEFINITELY come to a Jen and John arranged hunt. It stinks that there was less than desirable behavior involved. And yeah, what was up with that ridiculously HOT weather last week. That's why we DON'T go in July!

    ReplyDelete
  167. We would love a Disney scavenger hunt that you planned.
    Do I sense another book?

    ReplyDelete
  168. I was SO there last weekend with my family and all the people I saw doing the hunt looked like they were having a great time. I was a little jealous so I have to join D23 and be part of the fun in the future.

    ReplyDelete
  169. I'll be at Disney May 28 - June 3. I CAN'T WAIT!!

    ReplyDelete
  170. ...but I just got BACK from Disneyland!!! (I took a picture of the back side of water and thought of you!) Oh well - I guess if you make a Disney Scavenger Hunt, I'll just have to go back! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  171. I second my little sis, Pretty Princess. Our family would be up for trying your scavenger hunt. We tend to pick up new bits of trivia on our annual WDW trips. So it's right up our alley. :)

    ReplyDelete
  172. I would love to participate in a Disney scavenger hunt! I saw a bunch of people on the hunt this past weekend because I work at Disney's Animal Kingdom! The area I work in had only one question, but I think it was part of a high point question. It was hilarious seeing everyone run down the trail! :D

    ReplyDelete
  173. I would LOVE an Epbot Disney Scavenger Hunt! I did one hosted by Disney for the Disney College Program Alumni cast members last July and it was a blast! (I'm going to be back for another program this Fall, and would be more than happy to volunteer if you'd like help setting it up!)

    ReplyDelete
  174. This would be SO AWESOME! I live in Florida too - Jacksonville - and would be delighted to do a scavenger hunt in cooler weather.

    ReplyDelete
  175. You guys *really* need to check out Geocaching (www.geocaching.com). It's essentially a scavenger hunt-with GPS's. There are simple ones; difficult ones; puzzles, mysteries etc. You'll learn surprising things about places you thought you were familiar with. Please check it out!

    ReplyDelete
  176. Not a scavenger hunt, but I just got back from Disney and created a Vinylmation game where day 1 I buy a random Vinylmation, and then everyday on the trip (even multiple times) when I saw the Vinylmation trading black box, I traded the figure. I took pictures of each figure to track the journey. On the last day, whatever my last trade was, that was my Vinylmation of the trip (and my rule was no choosing from the clear box). It was so much fun and in the end I ended up with Waldorf from the Muppets.

    ReplyDelete
  177. Now that is the kind of scavenger hunt I would travel for :) Hubby and I are in Calgary AB - it would be an adventure just getting there, and then we could totally geek out - how fun!

Sounds like you had a great time on your hunt - better than the attack of the flamingos perhaps?

    ReplyDelete
  178. Can you have it ready by September? 120 days til I leave. :)

By the way, I love both your blogs and read them daily.

    ReplyDelete
  179. We were there, we survived. What an insane couple of days. We made it in 208th place, which for people that don't get to go to the parks as much was quite the feat.

    ReplyDelete
  180. Here's a third vote for MouseAdventure (put on by the fabulous people at mouseplanet.com).

Signups are happening soon for the Fall MouseAdventure at Hollywood Studios. The event takes place on Saturday November 12th.

We've done twelve or thirteen MAs, but all at Disneyland. One of these days, we'll make it to a WDW event!

    ReplyDelete
  181. I would love it if you could do like different levels?
So for people who want to do it at the same time as doing all of the rides can do one, as well as the hardcores :)
    It sounds really fun!

    ReplyDelete
  182. Darn it...I'm not planning to go their for a couple of years...with my son. My hubby and son would proble not care about getting the "good stuff", I guess I'm out.

    ReplyDelete
  183. If we were headed there this year, that would be awesome. Please repeat in a couple of years...that's when my parents are paying for our first Disney adventure!

    ReplyDelete
  184. I would LOVE this. I made a scavenger hunt for my extended family a few years ago (nothing huge, just things like "find the pickle tree" or "bow to cinderella's statue" and such) and had a fantastic time but I was a little bummed that, as the creator, I already knew where to find everything. I'd love to do someone else's hunt, especially one as well researched as yours.

    ReplyDelete
  185. Just tell me when, and I'll be there. My team and I shared your thoughts on this past hunt - we get down there a couple times a year from Ohio, and while we're not sorry we did the hunt and Destination D, we felt both could have been MUCH better planned and more accessible to relatively casual fans (if you consider daily Disney blog readers who've lost count of the number of times we've been there to be "casual.")

    ReplyDelete
  186. Jen, I agree. We were also there. We just had our DFTW on the Dream and were very excited that this was during our honeymoon. We were struggling just to "SURVIVE" let alone finish the books, we were hoping just to answer questions and get back to the check-in on time. But I do agree with you the "Cheating" was UNREAL. On the second day we literally saw a group sitting in a main area with a computer looking up information. I couldn't believe it, I believe we walked past them three or four times and they were just sitting there for at least an hour or so while we ran ALL over the MK. Needless to say we didn't win either. However, we are now much more prepared for next year. And are very eager for another scavenger hunt. We were thrilled that we finished in the top 30% of the groupings. I forget the actual number. We did much better than we thought.

I thought people were going to follow the rules, however, yes when you dangle a carrot the size of a "FANTASY" in front of them - all values get thrown out the window.

We are so up for a scavenger hunt if you guys do one. Please let us know. We are heading up tonight (we live in Florida) and are going up for my birthday. I found a few old hunts online so we are going to have a bit of fun.

    See you next year!!!

    Wendy

  187. I know tis post was forever ago but just found your blog and was doing some back reading... I was also at the scavenger hunt and it was INSANE HARD... like madness! And the cheating was terrible, i saw teams with ipads searching answers, 3 or 4 groups splitting up the book, etc. We did ok the first day but the second day we just kinda did half the effort, we never got to ride any rides, enjoy any time... luckily we were there 2 days ahead of time to get some of that in. Plus, I skipped the D23 meetings to go to the soft opening of Star Tours, that was AWESOME!!!
