Geek Glee 4/15/11

I know a lot of folks are busting out the Easter egg wreaths right now, but really, wouldn't you rather have THIS on your front door?

Source found via

An industrious father and son duo made this wreath together from dollar store toy packs. Yep, it's a wreath made of toys. Don't you love it? I mean, who wouldn't grin seeing this?

Plus, after spying that little ray gun in the top left, I'm thinking a completely sci-fi themed one would be awesome. Or what about Lego? Or little green army men? Or marbles? Or...well, you get the idea. :)

Here's an oldie but a goodie for us Labyrinth fans:

Did you hear about the time someone found Hoggle in a pile of lost luggage? Amanda D. found the story through the site of a company that buys and sells lost luggage by the truckload. Fascinating stuff! It reminds me of the time someone dredged a real, series-used Dalek from Doctor Who out of a pond in England.

And speaking of England: Monty Python fans, prepare for much rejoicing.

Alex M. has discovered a webpage that calculates the Airspeed Velocity of an Unladen Swallow. Seriously. It's got intimidating graphs, over-my-head mathematical formulas, and plenty of Monty Python quotes. Finally, the answer is revealed! (No, I won't tell you what it is - you'll have to go to the page and find it yourself.)

Here's some Muppet art that really pops:

Bork bork bork!

Susanne Ritchie (the artist) has set out to make all the Muppets out of balloons. And they're awesome. You can see the rest at her blog, Black Cat Balloons (Found via @GlennzTees)

And finally, your weekend simply can't kick off until you watch Peter Jackson's first video blog from the set of The Hobbit:

Stop everything. Watch this. Cry a little. Squee a lot.

Ok, now your weekend can officially begin.

Happy Friday, everyone! What's making you grin today?

  5. Re: Hobbit "Stop everything. Watch this. Cry a little. Squee a lot."

    Done, Done, Done and Done.

I've been so excited about this and was overwhelmed emotionally when I finally saw it. The sets, the costumes, the sets. Oh wow and the tribal welcome on 1st day of shooting. That brought a tear to my eye.

  6. Have you seen this: http://www.thinkgeek.com/tshirts-apparel/kids/e846/?cpg=157H&head

ALMOST makes me want to adopt a little boy to name Jareth! :)

  7. That is too funny...I grew up in Scottsboro, AL, home of the infamous Unclaimed Baggage (and not much else). What a find!

  8. I think I want to live in Bag End. And now I'm settling in with happy memories of my cats Gandalf and Elrond to re-read "The Hobbit."

  9. The Hobbit. Oh my. I have no idea how I am going to wait 2-3 years. Did he put on 3D glasses for Hobbit 3D?!? Do you think New Line re-releasing LOTR in 3D would be too much to hope for? Any word on whether they've reenlisted Howard Shore for the score?

Thank you SO much for putting it up - it made my day!!!

  10. I agree with h k. I got a bit overwhelmed when I saw Ian and Martin together. My heart just felt SO good. Martin is going to be perfect as Bilbo. I cannot wait to see these films.

Does anyone know: was that Deep Roy I saw in the cast? He's the guy who I will always remember as the Little Man with the Racing Snail in NeverEnding Story. He also played the Oompa Loompas in Tim Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and was Droopy McCool in Return of the Jedi!

I REALLY hope the rumors of Leonard Nimoy voicing Smaug come true!

I will be a happy girl for the rest of this weekend after watching that video! THANK YOU!

  12. LOVE The Hobbit vid! Watched it yesterday and kept getting chills! I so can't wait for the movie!

I had a geek glee day of my own on my blog...seeing as how HP7.1 is released today, I had to celebrate...so I got crafty and made a Gryffindor apron! It's the new love of my life.

  13. That wreath is a cute idea, but it needs to be themed. It looks far too jumbled as is, almost like a pile of junk. I think I may do something like this with my kids next year (when they're older).

  14. LOVED the Hobbit video! Thanks for sharing since I would have never thought to look for one. The tribal ceremony... tear.

  15. Gah! I now have a huge yen to run to the Oriental Trading and/or Archie McPhee web sites and order a bunch of cool stuff for wreath making!!!! Must. Control. Crafting. Urge.

  16. You know, Jen, that wreath is a cute idea, but I have become so sensitive to plastic waste that my first thought was "Oh, a wreath of plastic crap." Then I read your text and realized it was actually made of cute toys. ; ) to me, all that plastic is just wasted crap.

Now, here is a way I could really get behind the idea: anyone who gets industrious and wants to make such a wreath (esp. a themed one) could ask around their church, parents they know, on freecycle, and get little plastic toys donated to their cause for free. This way it would be giving a second life to toys that might otherwise be thrown away. The end result should be just as cute--maybe even cuter!

So, the idea is cute, but making it out of new dollar store toys kinda spoils it for me.

But think about it--vintage happy meal toys found at garage sales? TOTALLY cute! or comfortably worn/loved action figures? oh yeah! even picking up plastic squirt guns from friends with kids--that would be an adorable summer wreath.

  19. Just wanted to say, in exactly 41 minutes I'm about to have an extremely serious talk with my parents and I'm a complete nervous wreck. So I'm really glad I decided to check all my blogs quick, because this post has cheered me up quite a bit!

Muddy Dalek! Hobbits! Other things! Wonderful, thank you :]

  23. What's making me grin today? I found a capsule machine! At a laundromat, of all places...which I was only in to use their ATM. I immediately thought of you. I shall have to go back with a pocketful of quarters and buy a few...

Also, found this Jawa lawn ornament from ThinkGeek. Adorable!

  24. Okay, I went to the swallow site, but I didn't see a definitive answer. :( What was it?

  25. Thanks for posting the Hobbit Video. Ohhh, that Richard Armitage is so lovely and I can't wait to see him in this. I think Martin Freeman will make a perfect hobbit. Am looking forward to the movies, and I agree, 2-3 years is a long time.

  26. Your Blogs *always* give me a smile! Now, My 3 girls have Star Wars nicknames, and I need to find cat collars to match...
Dash Vader, Princess Mona, and Myste the Hut. I'm not crafty enough to make collars with their S.W. counterparts on them that will withstand regular kitty wear.
nunhici- v~ The inability to find the proper geekish accessories.
    n~ lack of Hi-C drinks.

  27. omg! I saw that video the other day! It made me like a giddy little school girl. I can't wait for the movie to come out. I subscribed to their blog RSS feed.

That wreath kind of makes me want to make a steampunk themed one out of copper tubing and and other wonderful things.

  28. Oh, I wonder if the rumor of David Tennant playing Thranduil is true... because that would be awesome.

  29. I can't wait! And I'm so with you, I LOVE Labyrinth.

  30. Thank you so much for posting the video blog of the Hobbit! I am geeking out so much right now! My roommates thought something was wrong with me because of the squeel/scream I let out. :D

  31. If they make any changes at all to The Hobbit, let the ponies not get eaten by the goblins... least favorite part of the book!

Love the wreath! I know what to do with all the little toys my kids don't play with.

  32. The hobbit video made me squee and go "please don't suck" all at the same time. I'm sure it'll be awesome.

This made me smile today: http://www.neatorama.com/2011/04/16/t-mobiles-version-of-the-royal-wedding-entrance/

Yeah, it's a commercial and it's a ripoff of a viral video, but it still made me giggle

  33. HOW DID I MISS THIS POST! I will be happy for a while just over the Swedish Chef balloon sculpture. You know how I love the Muppets and balloon sculptures!*

*I know that you really don't know this seeing as how you have no idea who I am.

  34. Well, it's Sunday now and what's making me grin is the loverly art I bought at a horror movie convention yesterday. For some reason, tucked among all of the blood splattered models, movie tees and movie props, there was a booth with a lovely lady and her man friend selling some very gorgeous art! Some of it could be considered dark but most of it was just beautiful drawings, prints, paintings and 3D sculpture. I had to restrain myself from buying absolutely everything on her table.
So, what's making me grin are the three pieces I bought and am now trying to find places on my walls for. :)

  36. I am so happy I found this blog! I took my kids to a children's museum and they had a mirror that had a border that looked like the wreath but it was spray painted gold. It was awesome! Thanks for sharing all this cool stuff! =)

  37. I am OUTRAGEOUSLY excited about The Hobbit. It was a favourite of mine as a child, and the fact that they've got both Aiden Turner and Martin Freeman in on this makes me squee and hug my laptop (unfortunately, in doing so I made the page skip so I had to go back and watch it from the beginning. Gosh. Darn.)

  38. OMG!!!!!! SQUEEEEEEEEEE!! I seriously got goose bumps all up and down from that last line "In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit." Cannot say how many times I sighed, cooed, laughed, grinned, and squealed with delight watching that video. Had to link it to my fb page right away. So exciting!!

Oh and all the other links were great, too. I so wanna go to that unclaimed luggage store someday!

  39. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who cried and sqeed upon watching Peter Jackson's video.
