This masterpiece just hit the 'net today, and you must see it.
Feast your eyes on the jaw-dropping beauty that is Lovett's "Eye of the Storm":
Wow. I think I just fell in love with steampunk all over again. The dragon! The goggles! The airship! The glowing green elixir! [swoon]
Yep, I'm gonna have to watch this another time or twelve.
Fingers crossed you non-US viewers can see it! (And if not, please don't lynch me. Heh.)
Oh, and a big thanks to Jen D. (aka Number 1) for sending me the link!
UPDATE: For more info on the artist Ben Lovett and also a behind-the-scenes making-of video, check out Nerdist's post here. (And thanks to Renee for *that* link!)
Canada can see it!
ReplyDeleteJust an fyi use non US folks/ aka Canadians anyway can see it and what a thing of beauty. Can we please have a movie made just like this? Hell base it on the story behind what this guy is going into the eye of the storm I don't care but it just HAS to be done. This is something else. I am so glad I found you all those months ago because you make my day with stuff like this. I think I shall now go to bed and dream of this world.
ReplyDeletethat airship is sheer awesomeness!
ReplyDeleteThis might be the coolest thing I've watched in some time.
ReplyDeleteThe video is beautiful, and the song is entrancing.
ReplyDeleteWow, that was great! I've even got a new band to start listening to out of that. And now when I'm desperately trying to explain to my family what Steampunk is and how awesome it is, I can just show them this video, wins all around! :D
ReplyDeleteIt's playing in the US, but I had to stop it -- the music was just too snoozesome. Maybe I'll try again with the sound off.
ReplyDeleteLOVE IT! Simply stunning.
ReplyDeleteHere from Australia. :) That video is gorgeous, and really quite inspiring. I've always loved steampunk and it's sparked ideas in me. :D Thanks so much for posting. :)
ReplyDeleteSimply gorgeous! Thanks for sharing! I'll be checking out more work by Lovett, that's for sure!
ReplyDeleteNorway sees it too :)
ReplyDeleteThe video was übercool; the song made me yawn tho lol - haunting, spooky...boring
*ducking and running for cover*
Worked fine in Germany, and I LOVED it!
ReplyDeleteOh wow! What a video! I am enchanted and now I have all sorts of ideas whizzing round in my head, not least of which is to find and tame a dragon. WANT!
ReplyDeleteWOW. That was beautiful and heartbreaking. My 7 yo daughter says it makes her feel "heartbreaking" and "I think that he just wants to die."
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting.
Eek Eeek! SQUEE!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDelete....[looks around]...
:) I'm not ashamed. It just happened.
Awesome!
ReplyDeleteAlso FYI if you'd like some glowing green elixer of your own Car coolant glows just like that under a black light. I wouldn't recomend it for every day use but if for Halloween or something.
I used it in a "Crystal ball" when I was a fortune teller for a charity carnival.
Ahhh......Super cool video!!! Not such a fan of the music, but the vid is SO worth the watch.
ReplyDeleteAll I can say is Wow.....
ReplyDeleteThat. Was. Awesome.
ReplyDeleteThat's gorgeous. Boosting the signal and spreading the link around as widely as possible. Thanks for sharing it!
ReplyDeleteLoved it! And could watch it from England :-) Thanks for sharing!!!!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful. Thank you for sharing! (totally linking to my website)
ReplyDeleteVery cool! The guy in the goggles reminds me of the captain from Romantically Apocalyptic. Not specifically steam punk, but it's hilarious.
ReplyDeleteP.S. I hope I got the code on the link right.
Amazing, fascinating, soul crushing, beautiful. You find the most wonderful things. Thanks so much for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI barely knew steam punk a year ago, and am falling more and more in love the more I see.
Loved the video! Gorgeously steampunk of course, but it also reminded me of the Edge Chronicles, a series I ADORED when I was younger. Anyone else get the same vibe???
ReplyDeletethat was stunning. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteBTW did anyone ever play Baten Kaitos on game cube? This really reminds me of it! I was one of my fave games on game cube.
URBAN DECAY!
ReplyDeleteI saw this stream of photos on my FB feed today, and I thouhgt, if you hadn't seen it yet, you would like to take a look:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/01/26/detroit-decline_n_813696.html#218521
They are all pictures from Detroit! Amazing photos!!
I suddenly thought back to an old german music video. I think it has a tiny steampunk vibe to it: Clickie
ReplyDeleteNot as beautiful as this one, but... there are goggles. :-) BTW, those goggles remind me of the Iron Giant.
First of all, That was goregous! the video, and the music, and the video... AMAZING! Secondly, there are people here that are curently IN Canada and IN Germany. *giggles* heehee... When your favorite show is about personified countries, these sort of things sound naughty.
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I agree....That was seriously cool. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI hate to be a downer.. but I watched that and just lost it. Full out crying fit. My boyfriend is huge into steam punk and well.. he apparently is no longer my boyfriend. *BIG SNIFFLING SOB*
ReplyDeleteHonestly, thanks for stirring up memories of one of the reasons why I love him so much. It's a beautiful video.. I wish I knew the story behind it.
Love the dragon!
ReplyDelete(Also love the Detroit urban decay photos that Tracibub linked to.)
@ stephanie j.: My reaction, at age 30, was exactly the same as your 7 year old daughter's. I don't know what I was expecting, but I cried, particularly after the dragon was released, as I feel my life at the moment parallels this video (not necessarily the song, as I was more interested in watching the video than trying to discern the words).
ReplyDeleteI adored this! But for some reason the shoes bug me.
ReplyDeletewv: gatin: I'm gatin that video spread as far as I can!
@ Ashleas - Sending virtual hugs your way. :( According to the behind-the-scenes video, the song actually *is* a metaphor for a relationship gone wrong, so it makes sense that it'd stir up those kind of feelings for you.
ReplyDeleteHang in there, my friend!
I want to go to there! And live there forever and ever! And I found some new music to get me out of the rut I was in. Thanks Jen!
ReplyDeleteComment for Mikeala...how to explain steampunk...i'm quoting Nathan Fillon from Castle/Firefly here..."Steampunk is the romance and beauty of the old combined with the hope and intellect of the new"...in other words a glorious smash-up of our favorite things!
ReplyDeleteFabulous flik...and i second the vote that we now need the full length feature!
Love it! You might enjoy this site: http://ifobot.com/ She makes robots out of found treasures. Cute! Inspires me to use my junk to make a bot:)
ReplyDeleteI love both of you blogs! You make me giggle daily!
ReplyDeleteWanted to pass on my other giggle today. pure geek bliss!

Apropos of your brief reference to Number One, guess what?
ReplyDeleteI found a Tumblr dedicated to Commander Riker.
You know, when I was an adolescent, Riker really taught me a thing or two. I learned that when one is faced with a daunting journey, a challenge, or assimilation by the Borg, one should make sure to approach the situation with:
1- Eyebrow(s) raised
2- ....Um....okay, now that I think of it, maybe he only taught me a thing, and not two.
Also, I love this photograph. I my own head, I've decided to call it, Chillaxin' on The Bridge.
On-topic now.
ReplyDeleteI finally watched the video. YouTube is not my friend, so I had to find it somewhere else.
Anyway, it is FANTASTIC!! Like, cinema fantastic!!
Thanks so much.
Hi Jen! Just wondering if you've seen the new Volkswagen commercial with a mini-Vader (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R55e-uHQna0); it seems right up your alley.
ReplyDeleteCheers!
Cool!
ReplyDeleteI'm not a big steampunk fan but I did love this movie.
ReplyDeleteThe geeky nerd in me's first thought with the green solution was that it looked exactly like GFP (green fluorescent protein) I purified in a genetics lab class.
...sorry Jen. You'd think a teacher would know to read the instructions first. The new Volkswagen commercial is here.
ReplyDeleteI read your blogs daily; could it really be that I'm the first to pass this on??
i hope you've seen this one already, but i figured i'd link it to you just in case, it has to be one of my favourite steampunk videos!
ReplyDeletethis is so beautiful!!!!!! Thank you!
ReplyDeletean awesome video :)
ReplyDeletereminds me a lot of a gorgeous australian short film that won an oscar a few years ago, called "the mysterious geographical explorations of jasper morello", i think. maybe "fantastic" instead of mysterious.
the design of this is also reminiscent of the incredible animation of the tale of three brothers in the new harry potter movie.
i love this style and its so great to see more of it :)
The deer is adorable!!!
ReplyDeleteI really hope this works. I've never embedded a link before.
@ Stephanie J, I'm with you and your 7 year old daughter - I was really affected by this, and I think your daughter got it in one about how heartbreaking it is, and why... a really wrenching watch, even though it is gloriously well made.
ReplyDelete@ Amanda, I'm so glad I'm not the only one who was irked by the shoes. They just don't go somehow! (They made me wonder if the costume person couldn't figure out what they ought to be and just went "oh whatever, they'll do", and I also wonder if they now watch the video and are annoyed because they didn't get the shoes right).
@ Eva thanks for the link to the German steam-punk-ish video. I'd love to know what that song is about.
ReplyDeleteThis video is amazing!
ReplyDeleteSo I was browsing etsy.com, came across this piece and immediately thought of you (I really hope this works)-- Seahorse figure
JenJenJen!
ReplyDeleteI just got back from the SFX Weekender in the depths of England and I had all the fun in the WORLD! I think you would have enjoyed it, one evening there was the'Imaginarium' cabaret act which had lots of steampunk people eating fire, throwing sparks around and doing magic tricks. And girls wandering around on stilts. And a dancing robot. And lots of excellent costumes. And Craig Charles. And George Takei. And I'll stop now. Sadly my camera broke but when my friend gives me a copy of her photos I'll send you some.
So gorgeous! The eyes remind me of 9. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeletePtolemy's Daughter - glad you like it! The lyrics paint a rather dire picture of the present, how things get you down, how you dream of a better world which won't come. The chorus goes something like 'when comes the flood, when comes the gate to another, great life somewhere'
ReplyDeleteI'd love to see this movie made. This looks like the final scene in an intensely fascinating story.
ReplyDeleteDid you see that the new Panic! At The Disco video is totally steampunk? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOgpdp3lP8M&feature=fvsr
ReplyDeleteFeaturing members of the League of STEAM and other Steampunk notables! (Austin Sirkin! Megan Maude!) Not a huge fan of their music, but had to love the video aesthetics!
That is a gorgeous video. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteWOW just WOW this is AMAZING sheer awesomeness and I have not even finished watching it! I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE dragons
