Now that's cool.
I love that even people who've never heard of Firefly (aka "sad people") can appreciate something like this. The lyrics are beautiful on their own, and the plaque has a rugged Asian/steampunk vibe that could go with all kinds of different decor.
The artist doesn't give any further explanation on how it's made, but the pics alone are great inspiration for us DIY types:
In fact, I could see this working beautifully with thin Masonite sheets, metal rivets, and metallic paints and glazes. Just smooth on some joint compound/spackling to give the wood a rugged texture before painting, and then use letter stamps to inset the text into the texture. Hmm.... [plotting]Ok, now I want to make one. Yep, this is going on the list!

ReplyDeleteLatest in my list is to finish the knit cap that started out as a gift for a friend's little guy, when a friend saw the pictures and wants one for himself. It's a knit cap with spikes on top to look like a dino...can't wait to see what the finished product looks like on a grown up noggin!

ReplyDeleteMy crafting to-do list for today is a ShrinkyDink necklace of the woman standing on the tightrope from the Haunted Mansion (going to Disneyland on Wednesday, so I plan on debuting it to my friends then) and stamped monster Valentine's Day cards.
Wow. That is *gorgeous*. Even if I had never seen Firefly (which would make me a sad person), I would love that. The lyrics are great even without the context of the show. Awesome.

So awesome! It's been on my list for a while, but I'm determined that before the month is up I'll be turning my headboard into a padded version so I can sit up and read in bed. :) Just need to pick a fabric!

ReplyDeleteGorgeous! I agree that that's something even non-fans would love. Plus it would be a way cool gift for someone who flies in the Air Force. I'm not a total Browncoat, but my husband sorta is, and I do enjoy Firefly. And I think part of the fun is that so many people don't know about it, so it's kinda like a secret club you get to be in when you meet a fellow Browncoat.

My shadow boxes for my Breyer Stablemates Halloween horse collection, my Breyer Stablemates Tennessee Walking Horse collection, and my Corpse Bride Hallmark ornaments are number one on my list. I also need to send you my shadow box pictures and instructions for my Jack Sparrow and Indy Jones Hallmark ornaments so you can share with others if you feel so inclined to do so. :)
I also do lots of cross stitch, and I have to finish my mother-in-law's piece by Mother's Day. I also must start and finish my brother-in-law-in-law's (you read that right) piece for his B-day in May.
hkmouse, I LOVE your necklace. It's just amazing! I used to make jewelry myself but my carpal tunnel gets in the way. So I am extremely impressed with this piece!

I do my best to un-sad people whenever possible, can't tell you how many times I've loaned out my copies of Firefly and Serenity to the unitiated! My current project is based on this tutorial for a TARDIS fall-open sewing box, though I'm altering mine to use photo-printed fabric on the outside and designing it to hold jewelry instead of sewing supplies.

Firefly makes me sad- I love it so much, and it depresses me every time I run out of episodes... Even have fantasies that one day they will bring it back... but how could they? they killed off Wash in the movie, and Shepard book! (sorryf rot eh nerdiness) :)

i am making myself an awning out of a canvas dropcloth and an outdoor "table" from an old sign (for petroleum products?) with an elephant on it. it may only be 30 degrees here, but by golly i will be ready for outdoors when spring finally comes.

ReplyDeleteI'm doing Thing-A-Day this year, so I'm getting a bunch of stuff done I wouldn't normally get around to. I got a ton of baking planned, all using recipes off Bakingdom, I'm learning to knit and crochet, I'm finishing a cross stitch, doing my friend's wedding invitations, possibly a Christmas card for next year, for my aunt, and working on a Christmas stocking as well as painting my wargame miniatures. So plenty of things to do!

ReplyDeleteI'm currently working on steampunk polymer clay hearts with resin (all cool with gears n stuff). Having problems getting my resin to set though. ARGH!!! Gotta love it. (Any one have a go-to brand of resin that doesn't take 72 hours to set?)
My current crafty project is the skirt I am making for my roller derby league's awards ceremony in May. I figure if I start now it'll actually be done in time.
ReplyDeleteIt's a panel skirt with the color of each team plus some extras (refs, all stars, our track maintenence guy, the league logo) and once it's put together I'm going to embroider the logos onto the bottom of the appropriate panel. When it's finished I'll send along a photo and/or link.
I pieced everything together this weekend and tried it on to make sure it fits. My daughter sees it and says, "Mom, that is going to be EPIC!" Yay!

My favorite new idea is purse dangles. Crocodile clips with about three beaded strands that hang down and end in a charm. They can be worn on your lapel or your purse to add a colorful punch to your outfit!
Also, we got a battery powered bead spinner and I'm sure my beading life will never be the same!!

ReplyDeleteMy current craft project is to turn some of the amazing scrapbooking trinkets I found at an outlet this weekend into funky magnets.
No so much a craft project... but I have been looking for some miniature marine/steampunk brass items. I found a really fun one on Esty a while back, but the seller sold out and isn't planning to get more for a while. However, after deciding to look for the same thing elsewhere, I found this site! I haven't tried ordering anything from them yet, but they have an amazing selection of little brass compasses, telescopes, and navagational devices!

@Katie - The "rivets" are hand made using copper sheeting for big holes or copper wire for smaller holes, a hammer, and a small anvil. Cathartic. I've actually never tried anything else.
