Dragon*Con!

Our first day at Dragon*Con had me and John hopping to three panels in a row, so I didn't have as much time for costume hunting as I would have liked. I still got plenty of doozies, though, so I can't *wait* to see what Saturday and Sunday bring.

And speaking of those panels, I'll start you off with a few pics of Eddie & Saul from Warehouse 13:

They're pretty much exactly like their characters, which is awesome. Probably the best line: Eddie recounted one time he asked his costar, Joanne, if it ever bothered her that he never takes anything seriously. Her response: "Sometimes I just want to stab you in the eye with a pencil." Ha! It's cute to know their relationship off screen is pretty much identical to that onscreen.

That's the only panel we sat close enough for pictures, though, so from here on out it's costumes, costumes, glorious costumes. (Wheeee!)

My first photo at the con. Aren't they cute?

"Fabulous, Harry, I love the feathers."

Fuzzy Yip Yips (Sorry; they were a moving target.)

Not too many booth babes at D*C, so this lovely lady really stood out.

HULK THIRSTY!

Well, at least two of them are looking the right way. :D

Ok, I hate asking because I know it makes me lose geek cred, but...anyone know what this is?

A little more eye candy for the fellas.

Here's both my favorite costume and photo of the day:

Inspired by the masquerade scene in The Labyrinth. The details were simply breath-taking in person. Love it!

And my second favorite shot:

I was taking as many pics in a row as I could to catch the helmet with all the lights on. I'm pretty sure this is this guy, too: check that link for *amazing* in-process photos of him making the helmet (it took him a year and a half!!).

How about a little steampunk?

This weekend D*C is trying to break the world's record for the most steampunk costumes in one photo, so I expect to have *lots* more goodies like this later on.

This lady's props were really cool:

All kinds of great detail.

Naturally, the shops offer plenty of steamy/Victorian goodness, too:

Here's a steampunk mechanic:

And finally, something I shot from two stories overhead, but that pretty well sums up the craziness of D*C:

A ten foot tall cardboard robot.

Hey, why not?

Oh, and even with the panels, we still met quite a few fans today. The Twitter "find Jen" game is so fun! I love meeting and chatting with folks. SO, if you're here, try to find us to say hello! We've also still got plenty of pins, calendars, and those oh-so-coveted carrot jockey necklaces to give out.

And for those of you attending vicariously through these posts: stay tuned for much, much more!

  6. Hooray for creative people with fun costumes!

I wish I could be there to hunt you down. >:) In a non-creepy, only looking for a nice carrot jockey treasure or something like that. :)

  7. OMG, some day I MUST get to D*C (and ComicCon, for that matter.) We finally got SyFy (I know, right?!) so we've been able to watch Warehouse 13--I saw the commercials on USA or something last season and it killed me not to get it. Love Eddie, Saul, Joanne and the whole cast. Thanks for letting us live vicariously through your pics!

Love the pictures (Russell is SO adorable!) Have you seen the movie City of Ember? It's been a while, but as I recall there's lots of steampunk in it (at the very least, it's very brown.)

  8. Not sure who the shiny dress is, but the bald chick with the massive ink is Jack from Mass Effect 2 standing with (probably) Miranda! Awesome, awesome costumes all around, though.

  9. OMGosh...I would have so much fun there! Have a blast and inundate us with pictures!

  10. Love the Yip yips! Totally attending vicariously through your posts and loving every minute.

  11. OMG...the yip-yips! Seriously, you just made my weekend with that pic! Thank you! :D

  12. I think maybe I should go to Dragon*Con someday instead of SDCC, anyplace where people dress up as the Patchwork Girl of Oz is a place where I can find my people. (We've got a local con this weekend but it's 1/2 anime, 1/2 gamers. No one would understand an Oz group.)

  13. Loved seeing your pics! Especially the ones of Eddie and Saul! I totally had a geek-out moment! I'm a huge Warehouse 13 fan. lol Anyway, keep the pics coming! I love seeing all the costumes! Hoping one day to actually get to go!! :)

  14. I love vicariously attending through your pics! You do such a great job narrating your pictures.

  15. So jealous of both the DC and PAX people. Someday I'll go to either, or both.

Also, I want to snug the heck out of the guy in the Up costume

  16. Great seeing you today, quite fortuitous considering I don't Twitter! I posted about my less-than-stellar experiences in the autograph room on my FB and pointed out meeting you and John was BY FAR the highlight of my day. The first thing my sister said was "Ooh, ooh, what does she look like?" XD

The elusive Jen was captured! she also berated me for not getting a picture of John too, so I'll be keeping an eye out tomorrow!

  17. The Patchwork girl from Oz is a friend of mine named Kim McFarland and she is an amazing artist. I used to do Rocky Horror with her and she would just become Frank, which is kind of funny because in real life she is very quiet. Cool to see someone I know in the pictures.

  18. I LOVE you Yip Yip costumes. I'm now going to go around all morning going, "Yip Yip Yip Yip" Followed By any of the following: Meeeeyoooooow? Meeeeeeyooooow? Brrrrrring! Brrrrring! Book Book Book Book Book"

  19. Omigosh I love Scraps and Scarecrow- The Patchwork Girl of Oz is my favourite Oz book!

  20. Wow! I would have loved to see the Daft Punk helmet guy in person! I'm still in awe from its construction process, haha :D

  21. Speaking of Warehouse 13, anyone know where I can get an image of the skeletal arms necklace Claudia wore in this past week's episode, "Vendetta"? It's apparently too soon to find the episode online, but I have a serious case of want.
As a pastor, I don't think I could get away with wearing such a necklace, but maybe I could just keep it around as art...

  22. I wonder if those are the same Yip-Yips I caught on video a few years back at D*C: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SOj1hjKgNUU

It is awesome that steampunk is getting more and more popular. I love seeing the costumes that show how creative the wearer/creator is!
Plus, aren't you excited that the next Bioshock is going to be steampunk style design with airships and stuff?

    ReplyDelete
  23. I just wanted to say thanks - I never get to go to these things, so it's brilliant to see your photos and descriptions. And you do take brilliant photos! (and have also totally converted me to steampunk)

    ReplyDelete
  24. I love Warehouse 13!!! So glad they brought it back for a second season.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Loved the yipe yips! I was so afraid of them when i was little, i thought they could *come* through my tv screen the same way they came though walls

Was the other costume with the feathers Sourcerer from She-ra?

  26. Hi Jen! My boyfriend just showed me this: http://designcrave.com/2010-09-02/frosted-design-10-steampunk-cakes/

you may have seen it already, but I just thought you'd love it if you haven't!

  27. OHH!!!! Warehouse 13 is one of my Faves!!! Eeeek, can you image dressing as HG in her corset/vest thingie?!?!?!

  28. Can someone please tell me what the woman in the bird costume is? I used to have an action figure of that character but never knew where it was from.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Oh, Russell is awesome!

I miss DragonCon. Went 5 years ago (at the height of Firefly madness, it was amazing) and had the most incredible time. Just seeing bits of the hotel in the background is making me all nostalgic.

Love all the steampunk. I agree with another poster, it is so fun to see costumes made from the wearer's imagination.

  30. I finally figured out what steampunk reminds me of--the Final Fantasy games!!

Would love to be at D*C (and I live in Chattanooga, TN, so it's really just down the road), but we're getting married next month so we're on a tight budget. Maybe next year!

  31. I hunted for your yellow boots before the parade, but sadly didn't see you. We ended up in a great spot in front of Brooks Brothers. Steampunk was well repesented this morning. I think my favorite of them that I got a shot of was the Wizard of Oz group.

    ReplyDelete
  32. The woman in the bird costume is the Sorceress from He-Man and She-Ra cartoons. I don't think she had a real name, they just called her Sorceress. She was kind of a Yoda-type character, all knowing and wise.

    ReplyDelete
  33. OMG, you just made my day. I made Epbot! (I'm the Babette with the Beauty and the Beast group.)

SQUEE! Sorry I wasn't looking the right way...when all those cameras are going off, it's tough to know WHICH way to look! :)

    Hope you're having a blast!

  34. The bird woman is The Sorceress from He-Man.

  35. WOW! Thanks for sharing these photos. It was fun browsing through so many creative costumes :)

  36. I liked those YipYips so much, I had to journey back in time and find some videos to watch. I don't think I ever knew they were Martians...

  37. I cannot take another year of living vicariously through your awesome pictures.
My ass will be at Dragon*Con next year if I have to sell my child to do it.
Okay not actually sell my child, but I'll sell my Celine Dion CD's. You think anyone will buy them?

And don't judge, it was a phase!

  38. A girl from HS is doing henna at Dragon*Con. Her name is Elizebeth and her business is Crimson Art Henna (she's on FB). She does BEAUTIFUL work. If you have any free time!

  39. love, love, love the patchwork girl!
I grew up reading those books and she was definitely one of my favorite characters. I love seeing other Oz geeks!

  40. My daughter bought her ticket to Dragon*Con last year on the last day of the conference. She loves it. This year she's 37 weeks pregnant, and it's not a good idea for her to go, so she sold her ticket. She still talks wistfully about how cool it would have been for the baby delivered by a Klingon or a Stormtrooper at Dragon*Con. Oh, well, there's always next year!

  41. What is the silver hooped dress? It's awesome, that's what it is.

    ReplyDelete
  42. My favorite part of this post is the quote from Aladdin. LOVE IT! :D

  43. "Don't they look lovely, June?"

    Love them all! :D

  44. Was fantastic to meet you two tonight as I was walking out. 'Twas a great cap for my first D*C experience (though I've lived in Atlanta almost my entire life and have been trying to make it for 10+ years).

Oh, and since you're not going to get to make it to Highland Bakery before you leave town, if you see this in time you should at least make a stop in at Sublime Doughnuts.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Hooooooly crap stop making me jealous!
Especially starting off a post with Eddie McClintock and Saul Rubinek - no fair. NO. FAIR. AT ALL.

    I always feel like I can't go to cons because I'm not a big enough geek and I just wouldn't get the references. ;-;

  46. shiny silver girl kind of looks like the diva from "the fifth element."

    ReplyDelete
  47. I love Warehouse 13! Also, YipYips. Completely awesome. I would totally go for a Muppet costume if I attended these things and didn't hate drawing attention to my self.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Didn't have time to scroll through all the comments, so don't know if your question was answered yet, but the shiny dress was the Diva from "Fifth Element".

    ReplyDelete
  49. More pics please! So want to see the rest of the weekend!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Loved meeting at Con. Everyone in the group wanted my carrot jocky!
    see you next year!
    everyone should go to DragonconTV.com
    great stuff!!!

  51. Someone I know just pointed out that there were pictures of me on here. I'm the woman in the Steampunk Morgan Le Fey outfit ( the wand and clockwork crystal ball)

    ReplyDelete
  52. I don't think the shiny picture is the Diva from Fifth Element, she was blue and had long sort of tendrils off her head, if someone were recreating that, it would look completely different. Just my thinking :)

    ReplyDelete
  53. I wonder if the shiny hoop girl is a lady gaga, certainly fits the weird bill..

    ReplyDelete
  54. I think the silver hoop dress is supposed to be the Diva from The 5th Element.

Awesome pictures, I love seeing the creativity that people put into their costumes!

  55. Hello, I happen to be the lady with the Labyrinth inspired costume. Thank you so much for the compliments! I love all the photos you took. I can't wait to go back. ^_^
