I have two sets of steampunked Wizard of Oz cosplay to show you. Here's the first:
Glinda's crown was pretty awesome, and the flying monkey was wearing a rocket pack.
Here they're joined by two more "friends":
Gorgeously done military/stewardess uniform:
She made it herself. Check out the pretty bustle:
This next guy on the right was huge, and his costume had so much going on it was hard to take it all in:
I'm sure it will shock absolutely none of you to learn that John reeeeally liked this girl's outfit:
This was taken at the steampunk ball, which unfortunately was so dark and crowded that I got very few useful pictures. (Boo.)
And finally, my favorite of the whole con: the ultimate steampunked/post-apocalyptic Wizard of Oz cast:
I don't have particularly good photos of these guys, so what I lack in quality I'll try to make up for with quantity. Heh.
Here's a shot with the flash on:
"Lion" is the same guy who is usually steampunk Boba Fett. (Turns out his name is John Strangeway. He and several more in this group [if not all] work for Penny Dreadful Productions. Check their site for lots more steampunk goodies!)
The girl on the floor is Dorothy; in her lap is a little stuffed Toto. I love that she's wearing red booties for her "ruby slippers."
The Wicked Witch's metal corset was amaaaazing:
As was Glinda's dress. You'll see better shots of it in my steampunk exhibition post; they had it and the Tin Man costume on display there.
The flying monkey is decked out in an aviator cap n' goggles and a Rocketeer-style jetpack. The scarecrow is a zombie scarecrow, because, as they pointed out, what did Scarecrow want? That's right: Braaaiiins. *giggle*
UPDATE: I believe the Tin Man suit is the same one used in the short movie Heartless: The Story of the Tin Man. (I overheard the suit makers mentioning a movie.) It's a gorgeous film, and only about 20 minutes long, so definitely go see it when you can.
The group later moved downstairs, so I tried again there with the flash:
And there you have it! Between this group and the steampunked X Men who won the costume contest, you could say that steampunk really ruled the con.
I didn't manage to photograph the X Men myself, but here's a photo by Daniel Valdez (who is the guy in the chair):
I just didn't know who she was at the time. :)
You may recognize Daniel's wheelchair; it's quite famous here on the internets. If you *haven't* seen it before, though, then definitely watch this:

So. Amazing.
If you're not sick of steampunk yet, then you're going to love my fashion show and exhibition posts, which will go up after my next costume gallery. So, be sure to check back!
I love looking at all the pictures! Been waiting all day for this post :)
ReplyDeleteLove all these costumes, wish I could have seen them. Very inspiring.
ReplyDeleteHow does one get sick of steampunk? Really I am not sure I understand that.
ReplyDeleteWoo thanks Jen for all the awesome pictures. Its like I was there.
ReplyDeleteThese are amazing pictures for amazing costumes. Thanks for posting!
ReplyDeleteThanks for all the Steampunk pictures. You got a few great ones of us at the parade. If you happen to have some good pictures of us would you mind sending them our way through.

That stewardess costume is A-MA-ZING!!
ReplyDeleteThe guy with all the clocks in the ninth picture was Chris Brown as "Post-Apocalyptic Time Traveller". He won Best Professional in the costume contest.
ReplyDeleteThe steampunk Wizard of Oz group was led by Erin Bushko, titled "Post-Apocalyptic Wizard of Oz Group", and they won Best of Show in the costume contest.
There were all sorts of great entries in the costume contest. I saw them backstage because I was the Predator in that contest.
My friends are the second Wizard of Oz group. :D
ReplyDeleteSick of Steampunk? Not any time soon. The wheelchair is amazinging.
ReplyDeleteThe more i see Steampunk, the more I LOVE it.
ReplyDeleteYaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay! Steampunk Gambit!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE Gambit. I named my dog Gambit. That's a good thing not a, "We named the dog Indiana" thing.
The details on these costumes are amazing. My favorite is the stewardess. :)
ReplyDeleteAnd, as it kind of fits the topic: I saw this Victoriany style Mario Bros. picture earlier this day and thought you might like it: hihi: @Zero Lives
Steampunk X-Men...
ReplyDeleteSo wish I'd been there to see it.
Loved the stewardess dress too, btw!
How could anyone get sick of steampunk?! :D Love the Wizard of Oz group.
ReplyDeleteWOW. I think I am now officially hooked on steampunk. There is a big steampunk convention in Tucson, AZ this year...I might just have to go. (I'm in the Phoenix area.)
ReplyDeleteI love how in the video of the chair the bubbles are there to keep the alcohol mixed and "look important."
My parents do cowboy action shooting and are really into costumes. I might just have to bug my mom to help me put one together. :) I wish I could sew, though...
The "Steampunk Hellboy" is actually a gentlemen known as "The Emperor of the Red Fork Empire" (Cant find his actual name for the life of me) he was a speaker/performer at the Steampunk worlds fair last year. He heads up a pretty interesting group of artisans and performers who developed a kind of guild.
ReplyDeleteMy opinion of a successful steampunk costume is not quantity but rather scale of accessories... the bigger the better.
ReplyDeleteI am so going to have to find a way to get to these cons next year!
ReplyDeleteLOVE the steampunk Oz group. Wow.
You should really come to Steamcon in Seattle. It's in Nov 19-21. Way way awesome! The costumes are absolutely amazing!
ReplyDeleteDid you see today's Frank and Earnest comic strip? It seems appropriate:

WV: shainful. It's shainful how many western-style costumes there were. (get it? huh? huh? Shain, Shane? Funny, right?)
Sick of Steampunk?! No way.
ReplyDeleteI am so jealous. I live just over 30 minutes south of all the Dragon*Con goodness, but due to financial constraints and family activities I couldn't go. I will just have to live vicariously through all your great photos!
I am going to say this fully realizing that I can't have been the first person to mention to you that the musical Wicked is full-on steampunked from the gears that cover the entire arch to the costumes to the makings of the wizard's control center. I had the chance to see the musical this summer and was honestly holding it in to not mention to everyone with me that the set design was completely steampunked!
ReplyDeleteShelley in So. IL
We are geeks. Why would we be sick of steampunk? Especially when you have steampunk X-men. Awesome.
ReplyDeletehmmm....is it possible to be sick of steampunk? If so, I haven't had that affliction yet.
ReplyDeleteKeep them coming! Love it!!!
Awesome! A little confused about the gal in the striped leggings in the 2nd WoO group, though. Wicked Witch of the East, maybe?
ReplyDeleteP.S. On y iPad I can never see the videos you post. Any chance of including a link?
(Much later...and after digging out my laptop...I can't see the captcha, either. Harumph.)
WV: prersher. I'm prersher I'd rather do this on my iPad. ;)
Sick of steampunk?
ReplyDeleteThanks, no, just getting started. :) Gorgeous pictures-thanks so much for sharing them!
(I will, I will get back to DCon someday....)
Is that.. can it be.. a GARTHIM in the background behind Rogue in the group shot?
ReplyDeleteOMG it totally is...
I think my geek meter just blew XD
Very cool pictures! I always love seeing what people come up with.
ReplyDeleteLast year I drew a whole set of steampunk ALL FEMALE Wizard of Oz crew. The only one I never got around to was the Wizard...
http://olivehuedesigns.blogspot.com/2009/01/first-post-ever.html
The gentlemen with the giant fist is Justinian Stanislaus, Emperor of the Red Fork Empire. He is not a Steampunk Hellboy but his prop is inspired by the main character in the comic book entitled "Steampunk"!
ReplyDelete:)
Great post. You got some excellent photos.
the "steampunk hellboy" isnt hellboy, he is the emperor of the red fork empire!
ReplyDeletehttp://www.redforkempire.com/
Sorry? Since when was it possible to get sick of steampunk? ^_^ Steampunk is epic!
ReplyDeleteHey, great post! I found you through yahoo images. Well, my friend's dad did, anyway. That's her, my brother and me in the first photo. :D (I'm the one with the skirt)
ReplyDeleteI loved the Wizard of Oz and X-Men groups. We kept seeing them around the con. :)
Did you get to see the huge steampunk world-record-attemp group photo being taken? So many costumes..! @.@
Nice pics! :D Someone told me about this site today--I and a couple friends are in the first picture. :D
ReplyDeleteI didn't see some of these costumes, they're pretty awesome. :D Thanks for taking pictures of them.
