The One Line of Code Every Commenter Should Know

Because I ask you guys to share links in the comments so often, I decided it's high time I teach you how to embed them. This makes it much, MUCH easier on the rest of us, since we can just click your text to visit the site in question, plus it eliminates those huge paragraphs of insanely long web links.

Now, don't worry; even if you know *nothing* about html, this is easy. Promise.

Here goes:

Let's say I want to make the words "my blog" a link to Epbot. Meaning my final product would look like this: my blog.

Here's what I have to write:

<a href="http://www.Epbot.com">my blog</a>

And that's it! See? Told you it wasn't hard.

So, here's your cheat sheet:

<a href="LINK ADDRESS">MY TEXT</a>

I suggest copying that down on a Post-it and sticking it to your monitor until you have it memorized.

Happy commenting!

UPDATE : Ack! Thanks for the heads up, guys: I forgot the "http" in my link above. Der whoops.

  1. Can I tell you? I use that line of code ALL THE TIME, and every single time I still have to look it up. No idea why, but it won't stick in my head.

  2. Just FYI (in case you don't already know), there's a Star Wars sale on Zazzle (30% off all Star Wars products, code: STARWARSSALE). :P

  3. SWEET! I've always wondered how people did that, I assumed it was magic that I was deemed not worthy to know. Can't wait to try it out.

  4. I'm ok with you teaching folks this one, but for the love of robots, never teach anyone how to make their text blink!

  5. True story:

While reading your post, I got to the cheat sheet part, immediately wrote it on a post it, stuck it on my laptop by the mousepad thingy, and then read the last sentence...where you suggested doing exactly that.

    Kind of creepy, actually.

  6. If you didn't already know that, are you still geeky enough to be reading this blog? :)

  7. thanks for sharing this, Jen. It's a simple bit of HTML that everyone online should know, right along with how to make things bold and italicized, and more importantly, how to turn off bold and italics.

And so, to demonstrate what we've all learned here today, I'm going to share with you mypersonal HTML cheat sheet.

  27. I love HTML and learned a bunch of it when I started keeping a LiveJournal back in 2003. Even my boyfriend, who works in IT, says he's amazed at how many codes I have memorized.

It's so cute seeing people get all excited about this. : )

  28. Good catch on the http:// bit. Relative vs absolute links are tricky.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Yes, yes, yes, but you forgot to mention that the easiest thing to do is copy and paste. :) (with Ctrl+c and Ctrl+v, of course) I have an imagine now of all these people with post-it notes on their computers, squinting to read if it's a "</, and taking 5+ minutes, etc., etc. :)

  41. I thought about embedding the link the one time I've shared one, but some comment platforms are very very angry about code they don't support.

I also spend more of my time with bbcode lately so I have to stop myself from using brackets :)

  42. Well, in that case, please visit Amazing Cakes by Vanessa! to see the cakes I made last week, and some tributes to my favorite cake artists, as well as a photo of Jen I took in Tempe (if you go back in the archives to June 22. Thanks, Jen! I have had trouble with that, but I have figured out how to embed links with the Blogspot button. Being able to embed links into comments is a very useful thing.
