Well, after much digging, I've assembled a personal wish-list of suitable lovelies over on Etsy. And in order to call all those hours of online shopping "research," I'm now going to share my list with you guys. :) Enjoy!
For Harry Potter geeks:
"Fleur's Snitch Necklace" by trophies [$19.50]
[click the pics to go to the Etsy listing]
This is my favorite of the snitch necklaces I've seen so far - it's kind of subtle, and I like the way the gold glass looks against the textured metal of the wings. Plus, it's under $20!For scientist geeks:
"Science Beaker and Flask Necklace" by Finest Imaginary [$21]
I used to wish I was a scientist just so I could quote Peter Venkman all day. ("Back off, man, I'm a scientist.") But now I wish I was a scientist so I could quote Peter Venkman AND wear this necklace. The clear acrylic is so modern and clean, and I love how the frosted lines cast a shadow.
For, uh, currency geeks?
"Ten Cent Necklace" by Rachel Sudlow [$22]
Ok, so I'm not sure how this is geeky exactly, but, c'mon, wearing money? There's something pretty clever in that. Plus, the patina really makes me want to touch it; it's deliciously tactile, don't you think?
UPDATE: I broke down and bought this one last week. It's lovely: tiny and delicate. It also inspired John and me to start playing with blow torches...but more on that later. ;)
For nerdy geeks:
"Black Retro Nerd Glasses Necklace" by Cinnamoroll Cafe [$7.30]
I actually have this necklace, or one just like it. (I got mine from Forever 21.) It's fabulous: punchy and graphic, and it makes everyone who sees it smile.
For gamer geeks:
"Girl Gamer Controller Necklace" by Deadly Pretty [$12]
There are plenty of adorable polymer clay controller charms out there, but for a necklace I like a little bling. This one is made of plastic with little rhinestone crystals for the buttons, so it's both cute and sparkly.
For comic book geeks:
"POW Wonder Woman Clamshell Necklace" by Laughing Raven Design [$42]
How fun is this design? The inside says "wonder woman" and has a small crystal hanging in it, too. (You choose either the "POW" front or the stars. Of course, I'd go with the "POW".) I love that it's a nod to the Wonder Woman while still making you a wonder woman while you're wearing it.
So tell me, guys, what'd I miss? Link to your favorite piece of geek chic jewelry in the comments! (Bonus points if you can find me a steampunk piece that's sparkly; most of what I've seen is all grunge and no glitter.)
This is a funny necklace from thinkgeek - http://www.thinkgeek.com/tshirts-apparel/jewelry/a38d/?cpg=froogle
ReplyDeleteThinkGeek has a bunch of nice geek jewlery. http://www.thinkgeek.com/tshirts-apparel/jewelry/
ooooh, more jewelry I want but do not need. For the Harry Potter geek in me, i was always a really big fan of Hermione's Time Turner Necklace....soooo pretty.
ReplyDeleteI'm not a Harry Potter fangirl and even I love the snitch. How fun!
ReplyDeleteBest I've done so far are Triforce earrings (wear the studs in my 2nd holes every day), but they're not sparkly... yet they're fun.
I have spent far too much time on Etsy since you posted that robot necklace. One of my favorites so far may come a little closer to "girly" steampunk - http://www.etsy.com/listing/38250830/filigree-steampunk
ReplyDeleteomg... now I see why I don't wear jewelry-- it's never been awesome enough. DeadlyPretty has a DS necklace. Now I can wear my DS close to my heart.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure my boyfriend will love that.
Don't you just love Etsy? I spend countless work hours there... and here. Time-theft isn't real theft, right?
ReplyDeleteOhhh I just might need that Golden Snitch!!! Here's a Steampunk locket with a bitty bit of bling: http://www.etsy.com/listing/47457210/steampunk-necklace-vintage-swiss-ruby
ReplyDeleteThe snitch necklace is awesome! I'll admit, as a thirty-something mom of almost three, my love of all things Potter isn't as hardcore as it used to be. But that is just classy enough to really tempt me!
ReplyDeleteLoves! I totally want the XBOX controller one! Here's one I've been eying on Etsy for Doctor Who fans:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.etsy.com/listing/47847770/doctor-who-adipose-necklace-sci-fi?ref=sr_gallery_7&ga_search_query=doctor+who+necklace&ga_search_type=handmade&ga_page=1&includes[]=tags&includes[]=title
Oooh, here's a pretty little Dalek! http://www.etsy.com/listing/47708116/exterminate-silver-robot-cameo-pendant
ReplyDeleteThe following two Etsy shops have some really gorgeous Steampunk stuff:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.etsy.com/shop/CatherinetteRings
http://www.etsy.com/shop/edmdesigns
The bracelets at Catherinette Rings are pretty awesome, but my favorites are the necklaces at edmdesigns.
Expensive, but amazing...

http://www.etsy.com/listing/47461378/steampunk-ring-vintage-hamilton-gleaming?ref=v1_other_1
ReplyDeletei like most of the stuff there!
Hi! As a fellow steampunk fan, I too lament the lack of glittery goodness in the jewelry offered. However, in my ramblings online, I stumbled (quite literally; stumbleupon is my internet crack) on this website: http://www.clockworkcouture.com/?q=SteampunkJewelry
ReplyDeleteYes, there is the obligatory "grungy" choices but there are also some fabulously sparkling necklaces and brooches such as this: http://www.clockworkcouture.com/?q=node/579
and this: http://www.clockworkcouture.com/?q=node/395
Hope these brighten your day!
I really like COGnitive Creations for steampunk jewelry. Here are a couple examples of their current items that I liked:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.etsy.com/listing/46989304/because-she-is-my-rose-deluxe-artful
http://www.etsy.com/listing/46329829/pursuit-of-the-mechanical-butterfly
My husband and I were actually starting to make some steampunk jewelry ourselves (his items are a little more industrial, mine are girlier), but all of our stash is currently in storage while we await yet another move. We're hoping to get an Etsy shop set up when we finally get to his new, permanent duty station this fall.

ReplyDeleteJen...I know it's not the sparklyest thing you've ever seen, but I would TOTALLY rock the gemstone rings! Maybe you can talk John into getting you one to add to your collection of geekery?
Just how shiny? Does amber count? Cause I think these are gorgeous: http://www.etsy.com/shop/CatherinetteRings
ReplyDeleteOh! Here's shinier: http://www.etsy.com/shop/LondonParticulars
ReplyDeleteI love cute Steam punk stuff! I saw lots of it at Emerald City Comicon!
ReplyDeleteTake a look through this sellers necklace area on Etsy:

The hair sticks especially make me drool.
These necklaces were so wonderful! I especially love the Snitch, sooooo PRETTY! I find that ElvenElysium on etsy puts up some wonderfully sparkly steampunk necklaces everyonce in a while. She has this one up now:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.etsy.com/listing/34633841/elven-elysium-steampunk-necklace
It's so blue and girly. I just LOVE her jewelry! LuckyCrown on Etsy also puts up really sparkly and pretty steampunk pieces, but she's all out right now. :( But here's the shop just in case she puts something up!

She has other cute stuff.
I'm a carpentry geek myself, so I've wanted these earrings (and bracelet and neckalce...) for a while. Someday I may need to break down and buy them!
ReplyDeletehttp://www.uncommongoods.com/item/item.jsp?itemId=13574
I just bought this, and I wear it everywhere. EVERYWHERE. And it gives me a great opportunity to tell the tale of Cthulu. : ) http://www.girlzlyfe.com/catalog.php?item=1310
ReplyDeleteI have this on order - because who can resist a handlebar moustache necklace? http://www.girlzlyfe.com/catalog.php?item=1074
And to further feed my love of all things Pepsi, I got these for my birthday. http://www.girlzlyfe.com/catalog.php?item=35

This is one of my favourite stores to look at Madeit.com.au (Australia's version of Etsy).
ReplyDeleteRunWildHorses
http://www.madeit.com.au/storecatalog.asp?userid=863
Their stuffs are too awesome with the use of watch parts. I love them all!
I once made an octopus ring, out of wax. This jewelry is really cool! I want the science, myself. I've never been on Etsy, so I'll probably check it out. :D
ReplyDeleteSince we're listing our favorite steampunk jewelry makers on Etsy I have to add this one:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.etsy.com/shop/HappenchanceAndOdd
Her jewelry has the perfect touches of femininity to it. A lot of her work flies fast so I try to keep a good eye on it.
http://www.etsy.com/listing/45276344/cupcake-jewelry-its-party-time-order are the most adorable cupcake necklaces!
ReplyDeleteI just bought this:http://www.etsy.com/listing/47852268/just-a-strange-blue-box-in-a-field?ref=vt_related_1
ReplyDeleteI'm probably going to be horribly murdered for bringing this up... Either by the hubby of doom, or Jen. It all depends on how they find dolls. There is an artist who does steampunk jewelery for dolls, and I thought I'd toss a few links. The page where I actually found it is unfortunately on a closed forum.

Nice stuff. Here's something for LEGO geeks like me (AKA AFOLs): http://www.edition-mathea.de/english/lifestyle-sites/nops/01_nops.html . I found them through a LEGO artist called Heather LEGOGirl who made this out of one: http://www.flickr.com/photos/heather_legogirl/3381482044/
ReplyDeleteI adore this (http://www.etsy.com/shop/birdzNbeez) Etsy shop. I have two of her necklaces: Two Dragonflies (http://www.etsy.com/listing/44161998/once-upon-a-time-two-dragonflies), and my husband bought me Time on My Hands (http://www.etsy.com/listing/46555454/once-upon-a-time-on-my-hands) for Mother's Day.

For Tom Swift or retro space geeks, I'd like to recommend two of my own shirts if I could:

Jen, you have captured my feelings exactly. WHY can't there be more geeky/girly jewelery? Thanks for sharing :)

I love geeky jewelery - as does every scientist-girl deep at heart, but was saddened by the lack of molecular biology type stuff - so made my own; http://thegeneticallyinsane.blogspot.com/2010/05/lets-sell-some-stuff.html
ReplyDeleteAlso on the amazingness that is Etsy - http://www.etsy.com/shop/molecularmuse
Dopamine and nucleotides and *awesome*!

ReplyDeleteI would recommend ANYTHING by Rachel Sudlow. I bought Christmas gifts for my mom and sister from her last year and she was fantastic to deal with.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I so want that first necklace! *covet*
For sparkly steampunk I'd love to point you towards my friend Robin at Shameless Fashions. She primarily does corsetry but has recently branched into steampunk with gorgeous results. She doesn't currently have an Etsy account but she has some pictures of her work on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=15673&id=123613991001160) and her contact email is on there as well.
Just a few of the sparky steam I found on Etsy.

Also, the ad I see when I visit your blog is for shanalogic.com so I visited it once and found some really cute geeky stuff. It will be my new go-to place for gifts for my 15 year old sister-in-law. She loves anime and cutesy little stuff.
ReplyDeleteI wish I was a science geek so I could own this microscope necklace (and who can beat a $12 price tag???)

This typewriter necklace is also cute.

Apparently, my father was a visionary. When I was a small child...in 1960-something, my Dad drilled a hole in the top of a 1926 English penny and put a chain through it for me to wear. I wore it all the time and I still have that necklace! My dad has been deceased since 1989 and it is one of my favorite treasures. Makes me a bit misty just thinking about it. {sniff} :)
ReplyDeleteLove the xbox controller necklace! I'm definitely going to have to show it to my daughter tomorrow (she's asleep).
ReplyDeleteAlas, I don't have an etsy contribution, and it's past my bedtime, but I fully intend of looking at all the links in the comments tomorrow. :)
I want that gamer girl one.. goes and bugs husband to get it for me lol.
ReplyDeleteYou probably have more than enough links to keep you occupied for awhile, but this is one of my new favorite etsy stores. If you like coin jewelry, this guy does some cool things with coins from all around the world. I have his Athena owl from Greece and LOVE it. :)

Oh wow, I really love the nerdy glasses necklace!! And the price! Definitely on my wishlist! I have a really cute charm that's a snare drum, I won it in a silent auction as part of a set of drum-geek things, I put it on a $1 ribbon thing from a street fair though since the chain it came with was ridiculous. I wear it to band practice and everyone loves it. (I play bass in my current band but I'm a drummer at heart, so I like to wear it to show my drummer pride!) Yay geeky girlie rockers!! :D
ReplyDeleteTheBlueKraken on Etsy usually has more jewelry than what's in the shop right now, but here's something to give you an idea:

They even have a cupcake one!

I especially love the button and silverware ones!
Dear Jen,

The artist Kythryne Aisling makes sparkly steampunk pieces. Her Alchemy of Time series is pretty fantastic. She would make anything sparkly if you wanted, and does custom work.

ReplyDeleteIs a shop I pretty much adore, they made a cracking set of coasters for my sisters 25th with astronaughts, knitting needles and yarn, a guitar and a rocket ship! All her favourite things as she's a scientist. I think alchemy is a superb feature.
Hello from South Yorkshire in the UK by the way!
Hey Jen,
ReplyDeleteI think I may have found the perfect one for you although I am sure someone else has already beaten me to it :)
http://www.flickr.com/photos/danielproulx/3881850247/
Its steampunk and sparkly and it has Mickey heads on it :)
Enjoy
Jen, I just checked their site, and it's "Flask", not "Flash".
ReplyDeleteBadali Jewelry has lots of handcrafted quality pieces from Lord of the Rings (their "Gollum gold necklace" is a cost-effective way to get your own Ring of Power--I love mine!) to runes, "Geek tags" and more. They are really nice folks too, having worked with them to create a custom engraved pin for our musical ensemble.
ReplyDeleteWhat about this for a pretty steampunk piece? http://www.etsy.com/listing/39220014/steampunk-double-hearts-watchparts?ref=sr_gallery_1&ga_search_query=steampunk&ga_search_type=&ga_page=&max=20&includes[]=tags&includes[]=title
ReplyDeleteIt's a Robo-Kiwi necklace - 'nuff said. (I want this so much). http://www.etsy.com/listing/41113113/robokiwi-moving-legs-and-wings?ref=sr_gallery_10&ga_search_query=steampunk+robot&ga_search_type=&ga_page=2&includes[]=tags&includes[]=title

ReplyDeleteACK I LOVE the HP necklace...hmmm to decide whether to get it for myself or my friend is the question. :)
ReplyDeleteI love the necklaces from The Blue Kraken, on Etsy. Cute, fun, and you can't get any more geeky than jewelry made from old computer circuit boards. :)

Pretty sure you will LOVE the Etsy shop birdzNbeez. I bought a necklace on there that was made from the workings of a vintage watch.
ReplyDeleteI found two steampunk pieces that I think are sparkly...but honestly I love the whole shop!

I have an 1884 nickel pendant that I wear. I love, love, love it!! It looks so "Old World" and cool. Most people don't realise it's a coin. It looks like art.
ReplyDeleteHey! Thanks for featuring my beaker & flask necklaces!

I remember my brother making a money necklace when he was a teen. He drilled a hole in a one dollar coin and put it on a cord and wore it for a long time.
ReplyDeleteLego jewelry!!! There's quite a few cool necklaces & earrings out there, including a few awesome Star Wars ones. :)
ReplyDeleteI also love lego cufflinks. :D
Jen. I'd just like to say damn you. DAMN YOU!
ReplyDeleteYou just have to be so clever and witty, don't you?
NOW I have ANOTHER blog in my "must check daily" list. You're killing my schedule!! ;)

I need the snitch! All the others are gorgeous, but that one is stunning.
ReplyDeleteOH, I wish!! I first thought the chic Buddy Holly glasses were one of those glasses-keeper chain thingies, like from the fifties.
ReplyDeleteI have one of those myself---a teensy pair of very pointy Harlequins---with rhinestones.
This may not be on Etsy, but I LOVE her work:

Someone I wach on Etsy does a lot of cute whimsical things. Her motto is the smaller, the cuter. The best part is the majority of her stuff has a little story to it too.
ReplyDeleteA steampunk turtle shell from her shop: http://www.etsy.com/listing/44253454/steampunk-turtle-shell-pendant
It updates with various things and she does comissions, too. Her dA (http://catharsisjb.deviantart.com/) has all the details there.

ReplyDeleteis my fav steampunk glitz shop ^-^
I love geek themed jewelry...mostly because it makes Hubb happy to know I'm just as geeky as him...even if it's more on the art side.
Oh and I adore this shop for it's total geek chic

ReplyDeleteI think this might be my new favorite site. I just popped in here over from cakewrecks and found not only Star Wars fanart (and drawn by a Pixar guy, nonetheless) BUT ALSO a snitch necklace! How cool is that?
ReplyDeleteAnd EPBOT...well since I used to work under the shadow of that big golf ball, how can I not like this site?
I come from a small place called New Zealand where they one made a small movie (or three) featuring thousands of orcs....

Oh. My. Gosh. Thank you for sharing this! This is the perfect present for my best friend. She's a Harry Potter junky and the hardest person in the world to shop for. Thanks you, thank you! A thousand times thank you!
ReplyDeleteWhen I saw this I could have wept. . .I want it SO badly, but the price dictates that it isn't meant to be. :^) It's good to want things we can't have, right?

The necklace charm listing is gone and so is the one for the Zelda Rupee Earring and Necklaces I bought for my bridesmaids. I do have pictures on my comp somewhere, though. Still organizing things...haha.
It was a good time :)
And I LOVE the snitch. My fav. And I enjoy both of your blogs so much!!
Squee!! I have just bookmarked a TON of links in this comments section under a folder called "Birthday Present Ideas" as a hint to the hubby. I'm so sad that the Dalek necklace sold already, but I've been looking for a magnifying glass necklace for FOREVER (like in the Evil Dead movies), and just found some while browsing on the Etsy sites. Whoo hoo!
ReplyDeleteYou know... I've been making "normal" jewelry, but I'm a huge geek. Hmmmm... Jen, you may have inspired me! :D
ReplyDeleteI don't have a website yet, but here are a few pics of my jewelry:

I stumbled here from your penny tutorial through a link on the steampunk community.
ReplyDeleteI recently bought this necklace at a ren faire. I hate to admit that I paid a lot more than this but it looks exactly the same so this must be the source. It's a working clock, which you wind. So cool! At least I know where to get a replacement if mine ever gets lost/broken!

Great blog.
I agree with you that if jewelry isn't quirky and a bit shiny, I'm not interested. I guess cause I'm half nerd and half fish or something. My favorites are something with a story behind it, so I usually pick up jewelry while traveling. One of my favorite and most recent pieces was a necklace that links together puzzle pieces which I got at the National American History Museum (part of the Smithsonian in Washington D.C. in case you didn't know) of all places.

Nerd-Tastic on deviantart have a lot of fun, cute and nerdy pieces! Bonus being a good chunk of the work is steampunk inspired.

They also take custom orders!

ReplyDeleteThis made to the front page of etsy, for good reason. It's lovely and I only wish there were more pictures.
While searching the Geek section on Etsy I found this:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.etsy.com/listing/50986037/crochet-necklace-3-d-eyeball
I ended up buying the Fleur necklace after reading it on your blog. It's very pretty in person. The tops of the wings are painted with white gold glitter and the ball part is glass. It's so pretty and so appealing to the Harry Potter geek in me. Lots of people who have seen it love it! So, thanks a bunch for posting this blog post, Jen! I love my necklace!
ReplyDeleteI recently bought Hermione's snitch necklace from the same shop and I LOVE it! I always get compliments. :)
