April Art Roundup!

It's that time again! Here's some of the best geek art to cross my path this month:

Max Kostenko is a Russian artist who does digital painting caricatures guaranteed to make you smile:

Look at Yoda's downy hair fuzz. Look at it.

Sadly I see no purchasing options (although I could have missed something on his blogs) but Kostenko's portrait of Superman taking a nap is just too perfect:

Ha!

Next up, some amazing 80s pop-culture illustrations by James White:

See the whole set here, although again, I can't find a way to purchase any prints. BOO. Take our money, artists! TAKE IT! (Found via ProtonCharging)

Oh, and White also did this cover:

The Rocketeer! YESSS.

Diane L. found this adorable artwork by J Salvador of Super Emo Friends over at WonderCon a few weeks ago:
"Crossing the Streams" 5X7 print, $15

And THIS one we can buy! YAY! Check Salvador's etsy store for lots more adorably sad geek characters.

Next up, Nicole C. spotted a great Disney/Avengers mash-up: Stitch dressed as Thor and Loki!

By Agnes Garbowska, who does a lot of convention commissions, if you're lucky enough to see her that way, or you can buy a few of her larger prints at her online store. Only $20 for a signed 11X17 like one of these:

Naturally, I had to include something for my new video game obsession this month:

 "The Songbird" by Kirsten Sjursen-Lien

I get the feeling Songbird art is going to be my new drug of choice. LOVE HIM SO MUCH. And I like this softer style of watercolor for him; such a great look.

I'm working my way through my second play-through of BioShock: Infinite, (third if you count the time I watched John play) and this time I bumped it up to "normal" difficulty. I'm about halfway through, and I think I died a dozen times last night. :D Still, this game just gets richer and more beautiful with each play-through. It really is a game that rewards exploration and taking your time. The art, design, and music are all just stunning.

K, moving on from my fangirl ravings...

Andrea O. found this next one by Andrew Hickinbottom. He calls it an "homage to comic conventions, and a tribute to those brave attendees who cosplay in skimpy outfits." Heheh.

"Comic Con Curves", prints start at $20 for a 12X16

Not a completely fair representation of geek guys, of course, but still accurate enough (from my experience) to make me wince and smile at the same time. (Smince? Wile?) I get the feeling this piece could spark some valuable discussions about cosplay culture - or at least be used to illustrate some of the excellent articles already out there - so that's partly why I'm including it. (The other part is it's gorgeously done, and I like the eyes peeking out of the droid. :))

Now hold on to your socks, because they're about to be blown off by SHEER CUTENESS:

Viva C. found these fantastic custom art dolls by Santani, another Russian artist with insane skills. I WANT TO HUG IT. And then tickle its feet.

Some of the dolls ride the line between creepy and cute, but usually in a way that's downright hysterical:

Tell me that doesn't make you smile. YOU CAN'T. (And...the little wings! Ack! So cute!)

Head over to Santani's deviantArt to see lots (and LOTS more), or to contact her about purchasing one. She says in the FAQ that her prices range from $94 to $233 US, which doesn't seem bad at all when you look at all that detail and snuggly squishable wonderfulness. (I want to rig up a shoulder perch/harness for that second one and walk around conventions with him.)

And finally, I think my friend Chris C. was the first to pass on this epic Haunted Mansion/Batman villains mash-up:

Isn't Harley with Killer Croc the best? Although they're all fantastic, really.

By Abraham Lopez, who says you can e-mail him to purchase prints. Hit the link to see lots more of his fan art in his deviantArt gallery.

Ok, guys, I think that does it for this month! As always, be sure to leave a comment to enter my monthly art drawing! The randomly selected winner will get to choose any available piece from my Pinterest art board as their prize. (I'll ship anywhere, so no worries if you live somewhere outside the U.S.) The winner will be announced by next week, so stay tuned!

UPDATE: The give-away has ended, and the winner is Justy! Congrats, Justy, and please e-mail me your address & choice of prize!

  6. I love that there are so many wonderful geek fan artists out there... however, I worry about those who are selling derivations of properties they don't own. Isn't there a place for copyright in the world of geek crafts/art? Celebrating your love for a concept/character is WONDERFUL! I have done it myself with some beaded ring patterns. But selling art based on characters you don't own is illegal. This bugs me. Just had to speak up.

    1. I've wondered this myself for years, and have never discovered a satisfactory answer, even from artists themselves. Some claim parody, which I guess is allowable, but would only apply to mash up art. Others have said it's ok if you only sell the original, and don't make prints. I just know it's a shame to see some artists obstaining from selling their art due to (probably legitimate) copyright concerns while other artists gleefully cash in with so such qualms or apparent repurcussions. No judgement here, since I obviously love buying fan art, but I can't claim to understand it well enough to defend it - and I selfishly just want to buy the art I like, regardless

    2. It's an especially timely question considering that Fox is cracking down on the sale of unauthorized Jayne hats... I mean, it's not even a character- it's a knit hat. So I imagine that people making fan arts of entire scenes from movies or multiple characters or whatever are in a pretty vulnerable place as far as copyright goes. It's probably just the idea that they aren't worth going after that keeps them safe from the copyright holders.

  18. I love that you post great geeky art! It inspires me to hang up more geek-dom in my office and house. (My office has an inspiration wall so I am always looking for stuff that I find inspiring, and your posts have lead me to some great artists!)

  21. The homage to conventions one is amazing! You can see how the girls helmet and scythe are made out of cardboard and tape! That and the adorable superman napping with teddy are my favorites of this round up :)

    ReplyDelete
  22. They are all super cool, but the Haunted Mansion/Batman set is my favorite. Love!

Those dolls are pretty amazing! I would have no idea how to go about making something like that. It looks so real that I wonder if they aren't taxidermied bits and pieces mixed with crafty stuff. Don't you love how technical that description is???

    ReplyDelete
  24. I love the Stitch ones, so cute!

    ReplyDelete
  25. As usual, you have found some of the cutest art . I love Yoda!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Those Batman/Haunted Mansion images are just begging to be hung with the bottom half rolled up (or some other ingenious method) so visitors to your home could just discover the goodness on their own. What fun. I love that mashups take two (or more) awesome things and make them even more awesome.

I think what saves the comic cosplay image is the girl's expression - she's basically just realized that she unintentionally placed her bum on display.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I'm always amazed how much great artwork is out there; thanks for taking the time to find it for us! I really love Kirsten Sjursen-Lien's style--her DeviantArt gallery was so much fun to look through. And Comic Con Curves is hilarious! All the details are just so great--down to the tape on her cardboard scythe!

  28. So cute. I'm just starting my geek art collection, and you always have such great suggestions!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Before this post I was drawing a blank for an anniversary gift. Problem solved.

    ReplyDelete
  30. WOW, I love all of these!! I'd particularly love to have that James White R2D2 print on my wall... Well, OUR wall, I guess, since my husband loves Star Wars almost as much as I do. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  31. So, so tempted to buy one of Ms Garbowska's prints. So adorable!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Those little critter-y things! Oh my goodness! I don't understand how they can be so cute. The little white Inari Fox... Whew. Did you see the little dumbo octopus?

I definitely admire your skills in keeping your ear to the ground in the geeky art world!

    ReplyDelete

  39. You've inspired my husband and I to redecorate our office the way WE want it. Origami Pikachu, Spock Mr. Potato Head, felt Gollum, and the bobble head known as "Bobble Fett" lead the charge.

  40. I mean, I really don't need anymore posters...but this is ART dang it, it's different.

  46. Commenting! Someday I will win. And that Yoda is fantastic.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Scrolling thru with my 11-yr-old son, we came across the cosplay one. First thing out of his mouth: "Oh, that's inappropriate." Bwah-hahaha! And those critter dolls: they're so FLUF-FAY!! I'm gonna die!

    ReplyDelete
  48. I know just how Superman feels.
Except my giant squid is two toddlers and my goal is to keep them alive.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Jen, seriously. You never cease to amaze me! That Yoda you found; so awesomely adorable! And mischievous! I think I about died from the cute.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Stitch is my favorite, although I really like the comic cosplay. I've not worn anything *that* revealing, but I generally wear a corset or bodice, and I've found myself the object of ogling a few times. Not sure if a droid has though. But, come to think of it, I did get wolf whistled at by R2D2 at Denver's StarFest this weekend...

    ReplyDelete
  51. Great finds this month! I'm sick of looking at the same four walls in my office all day, which must mean I need some new art ASAP :)

  60. I love the stuff by Santani! I want your Alice giclees! Fingers crossed!

    ReplyDelete
  61. Andrew H has a real Pixan style. What I really like though is the cute Loki and Thor/Stitch mash up.

    ReplyDelete
  62. the comic con curves reminded me of this (which i'm linking to b/c i wasn't sure if you've seen it and thought you'd like to know), though i still think it's a well done pic. and the little tear in crossing the streams just kills me. even though he's a giant, city destroying marshmallow man, i want to give him cuddles right then

    ReplyDelete
  63. Geez, you always find the coolest stuff!! The ComicCon one is great!

    ReplyDelete
  64. Man, I wish I had a large enough attention span to play a video game all the way through. Maybe someday I'll finish you, Skyward Sword . . .

    ReplyDelete
  65. I've been oohinig and aahing over sorcerer Mickey, but now I see there is a pic of the characters in their cruise gear! Soo cute!

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  74. I can't decide which I like more....the napping Superman or the Haunted Mansion/Villains stretching portraits!! Thanks for sharing these!

    ReplyDelete
  75. I'm right there with you with on Songbird! I had a really hard time on normal, though, during the ghost/zombie battles, and I had to try the zeppelin battle, like, twenty times, I'm sure. I was really frustrated by the learning walls in the major fights at the end instead of learning curves. But I did it eventually! Two shots of rum and a cup of almonds to stress-eat freely did the trick.

Plus, it totally blew my freaking mind! Not only because of the plot, but because of the astounding voice acting! I have never been so attached to people I couldn't see! I miss them. (Plus I sort of almost have a super huge crush on Booker...)

    ReplyDelete
  76. Awesome display of some very cool art! I hope I win your art giveaway!

    ReplyDelete
  85. Am I the only one who wants thought bubbles added to the Comic Con Curves? Especially the "signer" pointing his finger? Of course, that would probably rate it NSFW... Fantastic selection of art, Jen! You have the only blog which consistently makes me "squee!" And your comments convinced my hubby to try the new Bioshock - which ended up with me taking over the game - so THANKS for that!!

    ReplyDelete
  86. Harley is the best :3
I always enjoy your art posts (and your posts generally)

  89. I love all your choices this month, but, seriously, I WANT THAT LEIA. (From last time. Because she speaks to me. And it's adorable. GAH.)
Thanks, as always, for finding such great stuff!

    ReplyDelete
  94. As I said when I shared it on the Book of Face: I may not be Batman's biggest Batfan (see what I did there? hyuk!), but these are slightly awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Argh! You make me want to spend all the monies (but sadly I have none - or rather, it's all ear-marked for food and whatnots). I love love love the Superman napping!

    ReplyDelete
  96. Jen,

Do you think Santini makes a Gizmo like doll too? How about that in a backpack?

  111. Hi Jen!

This is the first time I've commented here but I've been religiously following Epbot ever since it started! I just love everything about your message (girls should not be limited by "societal norms") and your content (which is always, always superb). I've especially connected with your posts about anxiety, etc. It isn't easy! Your DIY projects are always inspiring and beautiful!

Well, I'm not sure what made me peek out from my shell and comment this time. Perhaps I just wanted to show some love/appreciation.

Thanks for everything you do! (And this month's art is *awesome*!)

    ReplyDelete
  112. I love the Star Wars art you keep finding! and the Doctor Who art, and the Ghostbusters art! And I think I need to try out BioShock Infinite now.

    ReplyDelete
  113. The more you rave about Bioshock:Infinite the more I am desperate to try it. But really, I don't need any more timesucking things to do/play/make. Unless Santa does bring me a TARDIS finally this year. Or a 28 hour day...

    ReplyDelete
  114. You always find the most amazing things!

    ReplyDelete
  115. Awesome art! I also love those little droid eyes!

    ReplyDelete
  116. Heya Jen,

I've seen a lot of inexpensive small birdcages that I think could be rigged up to your Lady Vadore costume in such a way that it hangs just in front of you over your shoulder, place one of those adorable little alien fuzzballs in it and you'd have the cutest steamy accessory at any Con.

  118. When geek fandom and creativity meet, such amazing things happen! Thanks so much for sharing all of these!

    ReplyDelete
  119. The thing I love best about your art posts is the links - I have to make sure I have an hour or four to spend before I read it because I know I'm going to be clicking and looking for a while!

    ReplyDelete
  120. You always find the best art! :)

    ReplyDelete
  121. Ack! I SO want those Artoo and Delorean prints! That's right up my alley right there!! :)

    ReplyDelete
  129. Those Haunted Mansion/Batman mash-ups are great!

    ReplyDelete
  130. The expression on the last of the semi-Furby dolls seemed strangely familiar to me, but I finally realized what it reminded me of: Toad, from our illustrated Wind in the Willows, sitting on the road staring after the motorcar.

This feeling was confirmed when my two-year-old wandered over, took one look at the picture, and yelled, "Toad!"

    ReplyDelete
  131. I'm freaked out by the fluffy things. Eek!

    ReplyDelete
  132. Ack! Amazing finds this month! I'm especially squeeing over the Rocketeer print; I still have my promotional Rocketeer cup from Pizza Hut :D It's held up nicely for the abuse it's taken for 20 years!

    ReplyDelete
  133. The Stitch Avenger made me so very happy...

    ReplyDelete
  134. I absolutely love those little critters! I think it's the feet that make it. At the Renn fair near us, there's a dealer that sells little gryphons that sit on your shoulder, and they have a control that goes down to your hand, so you can make them turn their heads and stuff. I always want one, but I never buy one.

    ReplyDelete
  135. Wow! Great round up this month! Might get a few of the super emo pieces for my husband's man cave. :)

    ReplyDelete
  136. i think this might be my favorite round ups since i started reading epbot! love love love !

    ReplyDelete
  137. Thank you for the little bits of joy you bring to my life showing be adorable things that I need to find funds for.

    ReplyDelete
  138. I love Superman taking a nap...right down to the teddy bear and the mirror reflection. So much cuteness!

    ReplyDelete
  139. LOVE the style of those Haunted Mansion/ Batman prints! Don't know much about either, but the artwork is beautiful. And that Doctor Who print is adorable :) As a relatively new Whovian I'm finding myself in great need of something like that for my walls, so I'll definitely have to check out her website!

    ReplyDelete
  140. How do you always find this amazing stuff every single time? :D Especially Yoda ist adorable!

    ReplyDelete
  141. Jen you've convinced me that I have to try Bioshock. Even though I usually stick to the Lego games, you've praised it so much in your posts that I think I'll just have to try it out!

  147. Agnes did those paintings at NYCC 2012. I walked by her table and they were drying. I thought they were so awesome that I had to commission her to paint a Stitch for me. I'll email you a picture when I get home. He's dressed as Captain Jack Sparrow. She's definitely one of my favorite comic con artists now! :)

  152. I actually love the Bat-trio stacked up on top of each other the best!
And as a female cosplayer, I have so many opinions about Con culture; on one hand, I know that I dress provocatively, but my body is still my own, and getting touched and catcalled can really ruin my day.

  153. From all your gushing about Bioshock Infinite, I'm sorely tempted to get some for myself. But I still have to finish Portal, and I'm continually low on funds, so I'll just have to wait until I can get published. *sigh*

    1. Check to see if there are any Redboxes around you, Jo (redbox.com) - they rent games for $2 a day, including BioShock:Infinite! If you save your progress to your Xbox's hard drive, you can just rent it the days you know you'll have several hours to play, and save yourself a bundle of money. (We finished in five nights the first time, I think.)
