Christmas Tree Surprise

I put our living room tree up a few days ago (still working on our top-secret* steampunk tree!), and last night I noticed the tree skirt was all rumpled.

I decided to investigate:

I guess I should be glad that's the extent of her "destruction." ;)

* Ok, so "top-secret" just got downgraded a little...

  1. We never used a tree skirt or we would have probably encountered the same thing, since all of our cats loved lying under there. Only one climbed the tree, but we got her the day after Christmas so she didn't get much practice before we took it down :-) One cat was declawed and her favorite thing to do when the tree was up was to jump out at the dog. It got so that the dog would NOT pass the tree unless someone was between her and it! Since it sat next to the doorway to the kitchen, it was common to see her use the alternate route through the bathroom, or for someone to walk into the kitchen and find that they were squeezing through the doorway with the dog!

  2. Is the steampunk tree no "Classified?"

Kitty looks AWESOME under the skirt. Our cats prefer the higher branches.......

  3. Didn't you know? Tree skirts have been voted *the* premiere place to hang out this holiday season.

  4. My cats *love* the treeskirt. Somehow, it MUST be rumpled and shoved around to make it the perfect cat hidey place or nap blanket.

I made ours our of polarfleece, with hand-cut appliques blanket-stitched with embroidery floss. Boy, does it attract the cats, though.

  5. Just put a bow on the kitty!

  6. Gotta get some presents under that tree - to sit on top of the tree skirt so that kitty can't get under it! haha

  7. This is exactly why we don't have a tree skirt anymore. Our cats thought that under the tree skirt was the best place in the house to nap. They would fight over it and we got tired of them knocking the tree over. So, it's either ugly tree stand or no tree.

  8. I wish you could have heard the collective "awww" from the three little girls who saw the video. :)

  9. We have a very plush tree skirt under our tree. The cats sleep on TOP of it, which I think is worse...it has to be lint-rolled constantly!

  10. Aww...sweet kitty! What a perfect place to hide. This seems perfectly innocent to me, but then, I have one who thinks the litter box is optional...

  11. Ogilvy doesn't get under the tree skirt; she bites the sequins off! After the hours I spent making it, I decided that a clear plastic overlay was the way to go...

  12. I'm actually kind of jealous of your "destruction" - we have already sacrificed three ornaments to appease the Kitty Gods and the tree just got put up on Sunday.

I'm terrified to get tinsel. I've heard horror stories from other humans with whom the cats deign to live.

  13. My cats love to run under the tree and slide on the tree skirt. Last night I caught Tinker batting at a candy cane icicle. He just couldn't resist the sparklies!

  14. I wish that was all my cat would do. My cat RACES down the hallway and LEAPS into the tree. He's destroyed at least two trees so far, and I'm dreading what he's going to do this year since he's quite a bit heavier. *eeep!*

You'll have to share some of those cat vs. tree videos you've found. <3

  15. I actually have given up and put a hook into the ceiling to keep my three cats from toppling over the tree. The bottom third of my tree are all non-breakable ornaments, for thems, and every morning I'll be cleaning up the nightly destruction...

  16. We haven't put our tree up yet, but I'm sure our kitties will be doing this too. All of the rugs in my house get messed up at least once a day :-) Kitties loves to burrow.

  17. I wish that is all our cats did. One part time indoor cat and a kitten destroyed the bottom of the big tree a few years ago. The new tree is small enough that the cats don't think it's worth trying to climb.

  18. D'aww! What a cutie smuggler. Tree skirts make great blankets. :D

  19. One year in college my roommates and I had three cats and three dogs between us. Our tree had nothing breakable on the bottom three feet and I looped a small chain from the top of the tree to a sturdy hook in the ceiling. We survived that christmas with only one broken ornament and it wasn't even the pets' fault.

  20. Such a sweet little face.
I haven't had the nerve to get a tree yet in the three years I've had my kittehs. They hate to be covered though, so perhaps this won't be my particular problem once I get the nerve to try it.
    Merry Christmas/Hanakah/Festivus!

  21. Our cat used to climb the tree. Couldn't find the cat? Look in the tree. As he got bigger, he would love to just sit under the tree, but never under the tree skirt!

  22. Adorable kitty! Tree? I see no tree before its time. ;)

  23. So cute! And your tree looks lovely.

  24. At least your kitty just snuggled, my sisters serial killer left a dead mouse.

  25. From what little I could see, the tree is gorgeous...and the kitty is so cute. I've had a kitty who climbed our tree multiple times.

  26. :D

That elicited a true life, out loud "AWWW!"

I miss having a cat. Especially around Christmas. Cats + Decorations + Wrapping paper and bows = happiness.

  28. we cant have a tree :( soon as you get the plastic one out the box the 4 cats go mental and start trying to thieve parts of it, a real tree or plastic they are at the top throwing decorations at you or a swift paw comes out to scratch you! I miss my tree

  29. Our cats usually sit ON the tree skirt. Very cute kitty under there though. :)

  30. We had a cat who used to lay under the tree, among the presents. ...Then she got old and started peeing on them. Unfortunately this was also the year that our family had a running gag about smelling the presents to see if we could guess what they were... lol

  31. I'm not going to be able to put up any decorations for a while as I am going to be moving house between now and Christmas!

    -eep-

  32. This "tree skirt" is nothing more than the super secret Kitteh Hide Out! Humans are banned! Otherwise, why on earth you would you have left such a lovely place to nap??? Really Jen.

  33. Kelly O _ PLEASE DO NOT PUT TINSEL UP. It is deadly to cats. Gets tangled in their gut and then bad things happen. And do tie the tree off. My Maine Coons have climebed the tree and that is why the bottom 3rd is non-breakable and tightly attached. Our tree skirt is a vinyl tablecloth to capture the excess water taken from the stand.

  34. super cute! our dog climbed under the tree as soon as it was up and scratched up the skirt- clearly he feels that straight skirts are not cool

also- as a shelter worker i was super happy to see a collar and id tag on your kitty. you rock :-)

  35. I can just hear the cat saying, "What? I called dibs. You can move along now."

  36. Your cat is adorable! And your tree is gorgeous!! I love how you put the lime green on there with the teal and gold--perfection!

  37. Awww! What a cute kitty!

The last cat my folk's had, Bruce, loved to borrow under a rug in the living. But he never went under the tree skirt for some reason.

None of any of the cats I've had ever climbed the tree. But one, Ty, did eat the tinsel.

@Kelly_O, yes, it's all the horror you have heard. I got a present from Ty that Christmas morning. Pulling the tinsel from her butt.

Ya know, it went in all silver, came out just clear plastic.

  38. I'm not a cat person but your kitty is RIDICULOUSLY cute. I want one.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Oh, that's funny. Be careful where you put those presents!

    ReplyDelete
  40. That is so cute! I love it when pets or younger kids do cute stuff like that!
Can't wait to see your christmas tree surprise!

  41. Awww, kitties just love caves... :-)
Mine fortunately have never tried to climb the tree, but they do steal ornaments, which is why this year, I'm using floral wire to attach them to the tree (the glass balls, not the cats). You can make it so the ornaments can still have some movement, but stay on the branch. And the wire is easily disguised with some nice ribbon. I've been hearing a lot of frustrated kitty screams these past few days.
Tinsel is out, though. Too dangerous.
Now, if I could only teach the little ones to quit climbing up human legs...
Word verficiation: ailub: ailub your kitty's cute face.

  42. You do not see her.

That is not a housecat. That is a wild pussycat of the jungle, curled up and hidden in her cave while she waits to pounce upon unsuspecting toys. The wild and vicious pussycat of the jungle is invisible when she hides and cannot be seen.

It's bringing back memories, too...when i was a kid, we had to stop putting that plastic tinsel on the bottom part of the tree; one of our cats duly earned the nickname Tinsel Tush.

  43. So cute! My kitties love to destroy my tree skirt. :D

  44. Oh my gosh, so cute! We've just rescued our first kitty and I'm worried about how she will do with the tree. We also, have a Great Dane and 6 kids (the youngest is terrible two), so my tree is probably doomed before I even set it up!

    ReplyDelete
  45. LOL! Poor kitty was minding its own business and you came along and took away its invisibility cloak. :-) so cute

  46. Cute! All our cat did was puke up cat chow all over the skirt, on purpose. Little does he know, Santa will be declining to bring any catnip this year, so there.

    ReplyDelete
  47. MOOOOOOM! WHY MUST YOU RUIN MY CAVE!?!

    ReplyDelete
  48. I'm sadly not putting up my tree this year. We got a new cat in January of 2011. She's trouble. And far too cute. A very bad combination as far as I'm concerned.

    ReplyDelete
  49. im not a cat person- like even a tiny bit, but my gosh your cat is super cute, he/she looks very placid...but maybe thats because she was just woken up my a camera weilding human

  50. Aw your kitty is so cute!!! That is what I am worried about with mine though. I just moved into my first apartment and thus have my own tree for the first time. My parents always had theirs on a platform on top of a table with a town/train under it so the cats would just go under the table if anything. Now, ours will be sitting on the floor so either they are gonna be under the tree skirt or up it. Either way it's gonna be an adventure haha

  51. It was my friend Heather & I (Elizabeth) who gave you that first ornament (the plastic "glass" one)! I'm so glad you like it! We found the empty plastic "glass" ornament at Michael's. It was right by the actual glass ones, but were only sold as individuals. So glad you like it! :)

  52. That is pretty ridiculously adorable....

  53. It's still awww... almost seven years later. That cat had an amazing catty life.
